I've been to HCGS several times including a stop in to give blood and then have a plate of BBQ and most recently for the Celebration of Life for my brother from another mother. In a city where the top bbq is unbelievable I was underwhelmed by their bbq. It's pretty good but doesn't rank with the better spots like Pit Room, Pinkerton's, etc. The highlight was the turkey. It's really tasty. I'll be getting it again. The brisket was a bit disappointing but, in their defense, I've set the bar very high. Sides were okay. The banana pudding was way too sweet. Walked in and was greeted by the nicest workers... the most welcome Ive felt since moving to Houston! Ordered a brisket combo with mac n cheese and mama's beans... THE BEST BRISKET IVE EVER EATEN! Only tried this place once and probably the last time. A 1 meat plate is $ 15 which is aright if the meat speaks for itself but I can't say that's the case. Brisket was extremely fatty I don't think they do a good job trimming the fat cap. Had a brisket peace which was all fat. There was no smoke flavor in the meat that I did get even though I saw a smoke ring. Only way I can describe taste is...... basic. Sides were okay nothing special. Stopped by for lunch today. When we walked in we were greeted by the smell of delicious, tradition Texas BBQ. The staff was friendly and courteous. Ordered to-go with a co-worker and I would definitely say I'd give it another "go". Brisket was moist and well seasoned. Ribs and chicken were a little on the dry side but not by much. Mash and ribs were also a little salty but that's probably more of my personal preference. Overall, was told by my co-worker who did pickup that owner was efficient and affable; and, while location isn't the best, store was tidy and put together. Do you really want great Texas BBQ...Find a BBQ shack under a bridge in an industrial part of town. Make sure there are plenty of BIG trucks in the parking lot and a competition pit-master with crazy good meat skills who also understands that in an outdoor slaw "mayonnaise and sunshine just don't mix". When you find this combination, more than likely, you are at the Harris County General Store. The man who "just likes to feed people" is Daniel Hinojosa. I had the 2 Meat plate with Ribs and Brisket. The ribs had very good chew, great smoke ring and needed no sauce other than the rub that was on them. The brisket was just plain good. I ordered two sides, and chatting with Daniel, wound up with three "just cause you got to try this". His raspberry vinaigrette slaw is a perfect match for the rub. The cheesy broccoli and rice is just like grandma made it and the potato salad is very good in an ordinary sunday family way. Overall this place is really good and very genuine Texas BBQ. Had a bad experience with the food, my ribs were reheated and was clearly from another day, the sausage was good but dry which was reheated also, the mac n cheese wasn't thoroughly mixed because the inconsistent of taste. I finally got to try this barbeque since they only open certain days of the week. We got there around 12 and there was a line. They are 4 kinds of meats: brisket, sausage, ribs an turkey breast which are all smoked. I had the brisket and sausage which were excellent and probably the best I have ever had. There's 5 sides to pick from : potato salad, fresh pinto beans, Mac n cheese, and small potato with sour cream and cheese. My mouth is watering as a write this. Added bonus, the sweet barbecue salad, spicy jalapenos and purple onion. This place is small and down to earth with great service and excellent prices for the amount of food you. Came on a Saturday. This is place has really good bbq. The brisket is on point! Good seasoning and good smoke taste. BUT... the sides are really bad with the exception of the charro beans. The macaroni and cheese tastes like noodles with butter. The green beans have tomatoes in them which some might like but was a no go for me. The charro beans are good. If I were to come here again I would probably just order the meat by the pound with no sides. read more

Today on my quest to bring you Houston's best BBQ I traveled to the East side of the city, I been to this place before and the last time I was here it was called real deal BBQ, unfortunately, it wasn't the real deal and I wrote up a bad review cause the BBQ just was just bad 2 weeks after I posted that review the place went out of business. Today the place goes under a different name called Harris County General Store Barbecue and my good friend Daniel is the Pitmaster. I known Danny for some time and met him during my Black Iguana days when we sponsored his cooking team Texas Cyclon Cookers, he is no stranger to the BBQ world and got started doing the Downtown market as well as the East End market where he began to make a name for himself he also hosted many BBQ cookoffs and had a few festivals that he headed up and organized. I knew he wanted to open up a place but never knew it would be where I wrote up my only bad review, when pulling up to the location off of 6555 Navigation I could see the new name on the building walking in I was greeted by Danny himself and we talked alittle about the ideas he has for the place as it is still a work in progess, but the smell of BBQ was in the air coming from his Pitmaker Vault smoker which I know very well and was able to give him a few tips to help him get the pit up to temp a little faster when smoking so much food. I came in late in the day so much of his food was sold out but they were able to make me a great plate to try things out that included Brisket, Ribs, Turkey, Sausage, Boudin, corn, loaded potatoes, coleslaw, and a banana pudding for dessert. Up first for me to try was the Brisket I must say it was packed with great flavor and the post oak smoke added that much needed extra kick to that perfectly rendered fat, the Ribs were also good I just wish I could have got some more but I can't complain I'm sure they would have tasted just as good as the one I had, Turkey was very moist and packed with some good smoke and the sausage had that perfect casing crack when you bit into it. Last for me was the Boudin and the sides and I must say just having the boudin gave it an extra little touch and a good addition to the whole meal his sides are all made in-house and to me makes a big difference then that store-bought stuff that many other big places use, last was the banana pudding and I must say that topped off the whole meal. Overall I recommend this place not only because Danny is my friend and the Pitmaker pit does its job right but because its good BBQ in a good location right beside the tracks and if your there at just the right time you will get a train horn reminding you that you are on the East Side on the industrial side of town that helped make this city what it is today......... read more

Food is delicious and plentiful! You can smell the bbq the minute you get out of the car, and it's wonderful! Huge clean dining room, great spacious covered outdoor seating with fans and a well kept grassy area. The brisket is so tasty and tender you can cut it with a fork. The loaded baked potato is large but not too large and cooked perfectly. The only thing we weren't crazy about was the cheesy broccoli rice, only because the rice was a bit overcooked (but we also got there close to closing). The banana pudding is to die for! Prices are very affordable. We were even each served a huge slice of perfectly ripe and sweet watermelon. Loved this place and can't wait to go back. read more
