We passed through Maddock while exploring our family roots that stretch back several generations. We were delighted to find Harriman's. Although this time we only got to savor the coffee, we were able to hang out long enough to get a good sample of the local hospitality and ambiance. We found the Harriman's building occupied by friendly folks, some of whom remembered stories about one of our relatives from decades ago. I spent the 4th of July weekend in 2024 with in-laws in Esmond, and had an opportunity to visit Harriman's a few times during my stay. I love it, and love the fact that the community came together to make it happen. They have a HUGE variety of coffee and non-coffee beverages as well as these incredible (and highly-coveted) caramel buns (I think that was what it was called) that are apparently available Saturday mornings only. We were fortunate enough to try one - only because the lovely people in front of us in line heard my husband was dying to try one and said they wouldn't order the last one so he could have it. One final note... they have an "apple caramel big train". I'd never heard of that drink before so ordered one. It was DELICIOUS. what a darling, darling, small prairie town diner! LOVE the architecture of the building itself ! It's like stepping back into the days of Mayberry! Our waitress was just darling. We got to meet Jim the owner/chef. Very nice guy who works very hard! Highly recommend for breakfast lunch or dinner! Bonus! The town library is inside with the diner. I hear the librarian is just as you would imagine a grandma who loves to read to little children. Upstairs is an opera house, which apparently puts on phenomenal productions several times a year. read more

I love Harriman's. Jim's food is always the perfect temperature. He makes the BEST Hot Roast Beef Sandwich in North Dakota!! He works so hard so our little town can have a great restaurant. Thanks Jim!! All his food is great!! read more

The town of Maddock really holds a special place in my heart and I was very happy to see what they did with the old hardware store building. The coffee shop closed at 4 and we arrived at 4:10pm. The ladies there went above and beyond to accommodate my family with refreshments. read more

From the food... to the service - Words cannot describe the amazing eats at this place. North Dakota may seem like the "sticks" to some -- but there is nothing lack luster here. It is amazing. Must try the Beer Cheese soup! Simply devine! Will go again...and again...and again.... read more

We had great service and the food was much better than expected in this quiet little town.

The building is most beautiful! Absolutely breath-taking!!! A coffee worker gave us a tour of the top floor. The food, not so much... A group of 6 came and we seated ourselves. The menu was not what was advertised at all....We all ended up trying burgers and *homemade soup*. The burgers were good, the soup was in no way made from the kitchen. We left disappointed because it was just satisfactory. Nothing special for this area and definitely not worth the 60 mile round trip other than to see the building. read more

Amazing little gem in the middle of NDak. Local facility renovated to include bar, coffee shop, library, and a hall located above on second floor. Foods always been good; I always get the special, penne with sauce today. Big portions. This place is magical with the renovation brining life to a somewhat small town. Better food and venue that anything in Devils Lake. Worth the stop even if it's out of your way!! read more

Made our first trip to try the prime rib special on Wednesday. (7/11/18) Us: "We're here to try the prime rib." Waiter: "The prime rib special is now on Saturday." We: "It was just in Saturday's paper as being on Wednesday." Waiter: "He changed it this week." Us: (after perusing the menu) "We'd like to try the ribs." Waiter: "We're out of ribs...they're not on the menu every day." Us: "They're on the menu you gave us." Waiter: "He's planning on changing the menus." I expect more from someone with "45 years of restaurant experience." It doesn't matter. We won't be back. read more

The building is beautiful, though the food and service lack respectively. I came in with a friend on a Friday night and we had to seat ourselves and grab our own menus. It took almost 15 minutes for anyone to notice we were there since it was so empty and all the staff must have been busy elsewhere...? Once the server took our order it was another 20 minutes for just a burger and a wrap. The food was really over seasoned and way too salty for either of us to finish. She never checked on us again until she dropped off the bill. The prices were very good for the portion sizes, but I will definitely not eat there again based on the food quality. I have heard such wonderful things about this small town establishment, though had the exact opposite experience. It's a shame since we live so close and don't have much in our area. read more

$10 per buffet plate consisting of only a sandwich with potato salad, cole slaw, chips, and a glass of water. I think you can do better.

The bar was super tiny and the drinks were good, though overpriced for the amount we got. The glasses were so small that half of a shot would burn the whole drink. I asked for a tap and apparently the keg was empty and no one knew how to change it. So I just settled for a canned beer as they didn't carry a bottle of the kind I wanted. My husband was happy as he knew several people there, but I was beyond disappointed. We ordered food and it took almost 30 minutes. I had a cheeseburger and it was really greasy. My husband had a philli and said he loved it. I seen people eating pizza and wished I had tried that instead. Overall not bad but not some place I'd ever visit again. Maybe we'll have to try the restaurant next time. Hubby really likes the place though. read more

The outside of the restaurant is beautiful. The inside, not so much. We were in Maddock visiting relatives and a group of us decided to stop in. The restaurant had building material all over the place like it was still under construction. The chicken alfredo was amazing! The pizza was disgusting! The table also shared a blackened steak which was wonderful. Our other item was the so called "homemade" onion rings. Don't bother. How can some items be so delicious while others basically nauseating? The family I have in the community rave about the place. I will definitely give it another chance. read more

Harriman's is one the cutest, small, town restaurants you'll ever come across!! Not only does this restaurant have a great, atmosphere, but the food is delicious! If you ever have the chance to stop and eat here, I, strongly, encourage you to give it a try! read more
