I actually had fun with my night shift nurse, Cheryl. I had to sign some paperwork and answer questions about my health & lifestyle. It was 00:30 before we finished. I wasn't very happy with them wanting to ultrasound me every time I urinated. But that was less painful than the blood draw that Cheryl attempted at 05:00. She tried two times, once in my arm and once in my hand. She was unsuccessful both times and I was crying after the hand stick. I was very unhappy to learn that they draw blood every Monday. Just what I needed, get woken up early to be in pain & cry. Atrium is nearly becoming a place that I never want to visit again. But I have to be open minded. I've been having a great time with my physical therapists and occupational therapists. They push you hard but they know what you are able to accomplish. I came here three days ago and I'm already up and walking with the aid of a walker. I can also propel myself around in a wheelchair! I was able to take a shower yesterday, the first time in over two months. I'm also way ahead of the goal that I set for myself. I wanted to walk to the gym. Yesterday I walked to the gym and back. Time to set a new goal. The wound care team has been using electro-therapy and a saline wound wash. The wound wash is a futuristic looking pistol that washes a wound with saline. It also sucks up the dead tissue at the same time.

Whenever I visited, I was treated warmly, and my father was always resting comfortably in a clean room and a pristine bed, with carefully laundered, comfortable clothes. He had dementia, so he was unable to tell us how the staff was treating him (and never having been the type of person to complain) we had to take non-verbal cues. All the cues pointed to a staff that was both patient and caring. Trust was essential to us and something we considered heavily before deciding on a place for our beloved father. During his final days, our family experienced feelings that I cannot properly put into words here. Likewise, I am unable to express how sensitive the staff was in their treatment of my father. I imagine that they deal with loss on a regular basis, but never once did they regard our grief casually. My father was a kind, gentle, man and was known for his singing voice, his whistling, his love of jazz and his love of the Word. The staff made sure he was able to enjoy all these things during his final days. They all knew him by name, and said he was easy to care for and easy to care about. This was evident in their heartfelt farewell. You can not pay someone to care, and [care] is what they did here. Perhaps I have not adequately relayed, but in my heart I will absolutely, always appreciate every last member of this staff for giving of themselves so selflessly, when it counted most.

They…read morerefuse to take responsibility for their serious mistakes and gaslight me whenever I confront them. The latest incident involved their failure to notify me when my mom fell at the facility. They sent her to the ER and had a contracted after-hours medical service call me from an 1800 number at 6:48 AM. This provider didn't inform me to look out for such a number in emergencies, so even if I had been awake, I wouldn't have known to answer. The Optum service team admitted they couldn't provide a specific number because calls come from various numbers. The facility claims Optum acts as their extension, while Optum says they aren't employees of the agency and that their relationship with the facility does not stop the facility nursing staff (staff in general) from contacting me directly. My mom has been at this facility for years, and they have always called me in the past when she fell or needed to go to the hospital, not the contracted Providers. From what I understand ( by research) this appears to be a state and federal violation. The bottom line is that my confused elderly mom was sent to the ER without my knowledge, and I only discovered it the next day when I noticed a wristband on her. She told me she asked the nursing home to call me, but they didn't. The facility continues to avoid accountability, as usual. I requested their grievance policy and form to file a complaint but was denied. Their regional Director decided he would not afford me this right and had the form completed by their Administration, not reflecting my chief complaint. I've received conflicting answers from the facility and the State Rep responsible for holding them accountable. This has been an ongoing battle just to protect my mom's rights and not be bullied by Administration (ignoring me many times, dismissing my concerns and gaslighting me) there because I am advocating for her.

The staff is what makes it so special here! The administrative team is top notch. Always looking…read morefor ways to improve the quality of care for Residents that live at Mecklenburg health and rehabilitation and for future residents is always their goal.

I…read morewas only 13 years old when I entered, hoping for real help with depression, and being on the autism spectrum. Instead of receiving care, I suffered neglect, discrimination, and violence during my time there. One of the most terrifying experiences was being physically attacked by another resident. I was injured, but staff minimized what happened, failed to take my safety seriously, and allowed threats and harassment to continue. The environment felt unsafe every single day, and staff were untrained and unprepared to handle serious issues between residents. I now have lifelong disabilities from the injuries as well from the neglect, and have been hospitalized many times after Newport for my PHYSICAL health. Medical neglect was also a constant problem. My basic needs--including food and proper medical care--were ignored or withheld. I was often left feeling weak, unsafe, and scared. Rather than being a supportive environment, Newport was a place where my physical health declined rapidly. On top of that, I faced discrimination and was pressured not to tell my mom or anybody the truth about what was happening inside the program. The facility's focus seemed to be on control and image, not on genuine healing or support. Families deserve to know the truth: Newport Academy is not a safe or healing environment for teenagers. It worsened my mental health, left me with lasting trauma, and caused severe harm. No child should ever go through what I experienced there.
