Where would we be without Mark Parker? Mark went to bat for us in a big way. First, he battled city…read moreplanners who took six weeks (for what should have been a one-day STFI permit) to get permits for our remodel situated on a split-zoned lot. Then he figured out how to add 175 square feet of new space to our in-city 1898 Victorian farmhouse, while preserving its original look and feel. While the square footage added was small (office, new deck, updated bath and tiny laundry area), Mark's design improved the livability in our tiny, 1050 square feet, home immensely. Light pours in the back, we have more closet space, our petite bathroom is both elegant and efficient, and the laundry is now upstairs in the house. Plus, with the addition of a new office, we freed up a bedroom for the child we hope to adopt. If all this weren't enough to make two happy home owners, Mark is a joy to work with. He's a great guy to have around during the stress of a remodel; he's patient, creative, smart, reliable, and a talented architect. I've been a designer and fabricator of furniture and sculpture for over forty-five years, so it wasn't difficult to start developing ideas. As I dreamed I began looking around for assistance with the process, and found Artisans Group. I didn't go to Artisans Group looking for an industry-leading eco-home. I came because I saw a couple of their projects and loved the clean modern style Tessa Smith and Randy Foster were putting together. They were realizing designs that seemed to me to be far beyond what other design/build groups were creating. Architecture has been a fascination most of my life, and what I saw in the lines and volumes Tessa was producing was a natural feel for proportions, for minimal and unique details, for the flow of life patterns in a home, and particularly for the play of light, natural and artificial, as it enhances and defines spaces and the experience of living. With Tessa and Artisans I got all of that plus a great experience of collaboration in design, and a house that always surprises me--because it is somehow more "me" than I would have designed by myself. It's a "world house," designed with details and technological solutions that are distinctly European and soundly ecological in a way that just makes sense. The house stays at comfortable temperatures with the air always fresh while using a tenth of the energy of my last house. The biggest surprise was when I moved in and found the experience to be more physically comfortable than I would have--or could have--imagined. The house seems to have its own body temperature, and wears like a glove. The Jewel Box (as we nick-named it during the design process) was designed to be a home and gallery. It has become a museum of my life's work and remains so comfortable and inspiring that I stay home wondering why I would want to be anywhere else. They said we would need to find a good architect for our project and are actually the ones that recommended Dan to us! Our project was for a Dadu on the footprint of the existing 15x30 garage and some renovations in our tiny 25x25 bungalow. He gave us 3 3-D mockups of the front space and great estimates of how much our different options would cost. His design suggestions were incredible with a back addition to move our staircase to the basement (now more living space) flow through the back of the house and add a new glassed in room that is truly the best room in our entire home! He was also integral to selecting our contractor (we did NOT go with hammer in hand who quoted 4x the price of everyone else we spoke to). We wanted to do a large portion of the work ourselves and Dan was very knowledgable all along the process and helped us find the help we needed and answer questions as they arose. He is a massive walking memory bank of knowledge in all things architecture and building based. We could not have asked for a better experience...and have highly recommended him to others including our neighbors!

He gave us 3 different layouts to choose from, each with computer generated 3-D images of the finished product. He listened to our feedback and came up with a final design that met our needs exactly. As the construction progressed, Dan was there on site, supervising the contractors, making changes as needed. Thank god he was there to make the decisions that only someone with experience and expertise (not us) could make correctly. He has an excellent eye, a thorough knowledge of materials and resources, and was able to keep us well under budget. Even though we live outside of Seattle, he was able to network with local businesses and use creative solutions to get us what we needed. He has been in touch since completion to make sure everything went as planned and spoke with the contractors a couple of times to get them back and make the needed adjustments.
