Considering I have a long long family connection to this location and train station, I feel…read moreentitled to write a review. I've seen it in good times and bad. Whether it's safe these days at certain hours I'm not sure. I know I wasn't fond of traveling to Port Chester alone at times in my life. I remember the times I needed a cab. Finding a cab was hit or miss. Incoming trains are not on the side where you can easily enter the Station Building. You walk down the long flight of stairs to a back street. Frequently my family would be waiting outside the station to pick me up. Sometimes they were late! I've never seen the inside of the station dirty. I always found it deserted. I didn't travel during peak hours. On my return trips to Manhattan I go outside and wait patiently for the train. I'm always afraid I'll miss it if I wait inside. I sure don't want to be stuck there waiting for the next train! When my Cousin Jim was alive we would sit in the car and talk. When we saw the train coming I'd head upstairs to the track. He'd wait to see I boarded safely. That memory makes me sad. It was nice to be cared for by a Cousin/Brother. Since he died I don't go back to Port Chester much. When I do my daughter usually goes with me. Thanks for letting me share my memories. And thanks Bill for posting. Seeing your recent post revived my history using this old Railroad Station!

So much has changed since I was growing up. This station used to have a small coffee stand that…read moresold newspapers, and bagels. The best part of it was the man behind the stand. He was blind. I was always amazed on how he was able to give people the exact change. Today the shop no longer exists. It is now a Restaraunt that is only open in the spring and summer time. This location gets commuters from Greenwich, rye and Port Chester. I can see a Starbucks here making a killing.

Typical Metro North Commuter railroad station to Grand Central in NYC…read more Average journey time between Rye and Grand Central around 40 minutes. Station is somewhat dilapidated and run down and needs to be cleaned up and modernized. Not what you would expect in Rye.

I've only been to a couple of the Metro North Stations, and they are all kind of the same to me. If…read moreyou are out of town and/or don't ride the train very often it isn't exceptionally obvious what you should be doing. Thankfully there were some really nice people that were willing to help out a little and show me the ropes, from parking to getting the tickets. The help they provided was 5+ stars. Parking: Kind of a problem, everything is parking permit only. I was told that after 5:00 they rarely check for permits and 'you should' be ok. Worst case you get a parking ticket, not towed. I really didn't have time to stress about it, so I went with it. Thankfully they were right and I didn't get a ticket. When you are here you have to cross to the other side of the track to purchase your ticket. The train was really close to running on time and only had to wait a couple minutes. 40 - 45 minutes ride to get in to Grand Central including all the stops along the way for pick ups and drop offs. Last train back runs pretty late out of the city. The one I caught was at 11:30, but they had at least two more trains after mine with the latest somewhere between 12:30 and 1:00 am. Overall price and experience isn't bad. Primarily, I wish that they had parking that wasn't permit only. They may have, I just wasn't able to find it.

Awesome! A must see…read more Every Sunday starting after Thanksgiving through December, the MTA rolls out it's vintage subway cars from the transit museum. Immaculately restored and for a normal fare, you can ride on these cars on the F line from 2nd ave to 145th, making normal stops along the way. You are able to walk through each car to see the different styles and remodels. It's acceptable to dress in time period clothing as well. Original signs, advertisements, lighting systems, fans, ventilation are all displayed and completely functional. The car was getting hot, so, the fans turned on! It's a very special experience to ride on a car that people used from over 100 years ago. It makes you appreciate the technology of the subway system. So cool, particularly if you are partial to vintage and old NY history.

It's on a different schedule from a normal subway. The train came about 20 minutes early to 2nd Ave. You can get more info about routes through the NY transit museum website. The train goes all the way to 125th street. We got off at Columbus Circle for the holiday market. The train is a circa 1905 subway complete with working fans on the ceiling and rattan seats. Advertisements are for the period and several people are dressed in period clothes. Another fun NYC experience!

Home. I went to…read moreschool right here for my entire childhood. Though the idea of hopping on a train had always frightened me, I became desensitized by how often we'd hear the train TOOT TOOT in the middle of our exams. I did get mooned here once in 4th grade because the people waiting at the train station, 3 of them, decided to pull their pants down. The Centre Avenue school playground is right next to this station. There is only a metal wire fence separating the two. We got so many assemblies informing us about the dangers of the third rail because of this station. Although it may be convenient to have a station here, the Centre Avenue station is 50 cents more expensive than Lynbrook to get to Penn Station and doesn't have as many trains running through there because the only line that passes through it is the Long Beach Line. I prefer the Lynbrook station because more often than not, my destination is either Penn or Woodside, in which case the Babylon AND Long Beach lines can take me. A few more minutes of walking can save 50 cents a ride! Unlike the Lynbrook station, this station doesn't have a booth to talk to someone for help with buying a ticket and also doesn't have a bathroom. The Centre Avenue station has many food places nearby if you hop off and are hungry. One down side to having a train station right next to a school, both Centre Ave. and the high school is that people that live on the opposite side of the school are frequently late to school because of it. I'm blessed enough to never have to deal with either tracks, but I have friends that were always late because of it. The station has one plastic hut to stand inside, the bench that is on the platform is outside, so you get to choose between standing inside or sitting in the sun/rain/snow.
