This time was way different. Upon approaching the desk and announcing that I wanted to use the range. I was asked if I had a black card. Not sure what that is for. They checked if I was in their database because I said that I had been there before. I am not sure how I feel about being in anyone's database. Signing a range safety brief and waiver for a range is a normal thing but the video they have you watch is tailored to newer shooters. They list only three safety rules when everyone knows there are four standard range safety rules (four for the last 30 years of using ranges). The video repeats itself many times, like I said it is for newbies. Then it came time to fill out the waiver. The standard range language was in there. Then a section on COVID as if that is any concern at the range. I suppose a waiver like this should be used at every restaurant as well. Filling out my information at the end of the waiver I stopped to ask if they needed my email. I was told it was to send the waiver to me. I asked why they needed my address. All these data points are marked as required. I stopped and left because no gun range needs to collect my personal information and add it to a database. Buyer beware this place has a new policy of collecting your information and admittedly entering that information in a database. Their explanation is that lawyers make them do it. I say that you should go anywhere else that does not require your address and put you in a database. In an age of illegal immigrants that nobody has addresses for this is a warning sign.

I've been to several firearms training and shooting "courses" over the last 10 years, both within the military and civilian sector, and STS is where it's at. In the past couple months I've been fortunate to attend a couple courses with STS,... Both Rifle and Pistol, and the knowledge and professionalism STS delivers is hands down, the best I've seen thus far. It's one thing to pay for a course, listen to rapid and robotized instruction about how everyone needs to shoot from a particular instructor and then throw some lead down range. It's a whole different experience to find instruction, which is backed up by practical application and knowledge. Their courses can be challenging, but I believe that's necessary. The STS team takes the time to ensure every student, regardless of the level of experience is confident and ready to move on, before starting the next block. They observe every shooter through each drill, suggesting modifications and corrections before moving on. It's something I have rarely seen in this industry. After each course, I have walked away with more knowledge, improved groupings and confidence. You get what you pay for, and even with a class, the time invested in each student, is what you would receive individually. When looking for a course, do your research. I've been out of that game since 2008, but I recently had the opportunity to attend the STS SMOKECHECK 15-01 event. I was quite impressed not only with the level of planning and professionalism of the cadre but also with the variety and intensity of the course. For two days they pushed us, pushed us some more, gave us a little break and then pushed us again. If you have attended their lower level tactical pistol and rifle courses I'd highly recommend you test yourself at one of their SMOKECHECK events. It's not just about shooting though. It's about teamwork, thinking on the move, physical and mental stress all rolled into one super fun but tough event. If you are looking to challenge yourself, give yourself a gut-check and find out where you stand physically and mentally... this is the event to attend. It's just going to get better and more difficult so be ready: mentally and physically! I will definitely be back for a future event. These aren't just guys who train you these are all people who've walked the walk in MARSOC, Force Recon or Sniper Teams. Their course will test you and teach you all at the same time. They will break through your strengths to unmask your weaknesses so that you'll be able to work on them later. The SMOKECHECK event was on par with many of the tactical shooting/ training courses I've attend in the past for my professional life.

I was dreading taking this course because these classes are typically death by lecture and power point. However, I was very happy with the instruction style from Spot on Defense. Mac's personality and experience in firearms instruction made this class not only tolerable but fun and informative. Mac encourages student interaction while keeping the class focused on training objectives. Range time was safe, effective, but not over regimented. Following the CCW range instruction, we also had the opportunity to practice additional tactical gun drills which was great. I thought I knew just about all I needed to know regarding North Carolina CCW laws but after attending this course from Spot on Defense, I feel better educated and prepared with regard to ensuring I carry legally. Went into the store and saw that they have offers for both concealed carry classes and also for NRA gun safety courses. This shows me that this store and its owner are not just about making money, but making it about people being safe gun owners. This is a great thing. The store is well stocked and the staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. There was a nice range of prices on the handguns so there are guns available for all buyers, from the new handgun owner to the experienced. I see now on Yelp that they are closed Sunday and Monday and Tuesday... Had she said that no one can go over there because 85% of the building is closed today, I could have accepted that.
