After two decades of shooting at the ranges in Northern Virginia, this was awesome. The range master was sharp, direct and excellent, nothing happened on his shooting line he did not see. It was the most relaxing atmosphere to shoot, no pressure, no one was being judgmental or pretentious. I just moved to NC, and am so happy to have this range near my house. I went to Flatwoods Outfitters for the 1st time recently after having an unacceptable experience at another local range. I got there early on a week day & was pleasantly surprised to see a few other folks there. It was just what I was hoping for.Everyone on the range was there for a similar reason & I felt comfortable around them,everyone was friendly & sane! The range master was equally serious,professional & courteous. He ran the range with a keen eye & with authority but gave us all the time & space to get targets set up,equipment organized & be at the ready for range commands.There was ample time with both hot & cold firing times & we all respected eachother & the RM. The range fee was very fair & for a whole day & I got everything I wanted to achieve that day with no rushing or pressure. I'm grateful for the professionals at Flatwoods Outfitters for a really fun day out,doing the things I love doing but rarely have time or a whole lot of $$ to do. Thank you. read more

The RSO Rick can be a little aggressive with keeping to the rules in place but if you consider what his job is I think he is great, I was there yesterday pretty much all day and I didn't have a single issue with him; he actually took some time to help me zero my rifle and give me some tips because I admitted to being rusty, two other guys did have an issue with him when they got yelled at because while I was down range replacing my target they started grabbing their guns (one of the rules in place during a cold range); me personally i appreciate the fact that he enforced that rule to try and keep a safe range. During the time i was there that was really the only issue during the range it definitely felt like majority of the shooters had a pretty decent time. To sum it all up, as long as you can handle listening to the RSO and following the rules I think you'll have a decent time at this range. They don't have many restrictions on the type of ammo you can use and the staff (so long as you pay attention and follow the rules) are pretty friendly. read more

Started off very well, nice guy in the shop. Very helpfull. Walking up to the range itself my son and I were yelled at by the so called range master, Rick. Apparently we weren't supposed to approach the range until he said we could. We were instructed to read all the rules before approaching. Nowhere on there does it say to not approach Intill told to do so. Anyway, I let that go , wasn't crazy about being talked to like a five year old but I'm not that sensitive so I let it go. We stood there for about 5 minutes while he adjusted the only other shooters scope, repeatedly telling us he'd be with us in a minute. Finally he instructed us to go to the pistol range and to get our targets out and wait until he was ready for us to place the targets down range. He approached us and spurred out a bunch of rules, on top if the 20 rules written down on the board. I don't know if he was having a bad day or if this his everyday attitude but it sucked. After a couple of clips we were going to switch to our rifle but at this point I didn't want to go thru the hassle of hearing him tell me all the rules again. As soon as he called a ceaec fire, we gathered up our targets. He approached us again and asked us if our guns were unloaded and our slides were to the rear. We said yes and started packing our guns away. As soon as he saw that he started yelling at us, telling us we had to wait till he called a hot range for us to pick up oylur weapons. We just continued packing, and left. I stopped at the office and told the nice guy in there that we wouldnt be back because of Rick. Always a great day at the range. Rick was helpful as usual there were only a few shooters at this time of day between 1pm and 2:30pm. Only one small concern. On my last range visit I showed up with my open carry gun on my hip to the range. I noticed that the signage says that guns are allowed on the property at the shop but a sign near the range says that concealed carry is not allowed on the range. Today, I asked the fellow in the shop about the last time I was here about Rick having me clear my open carry gun upon arriving at the range vs letting me walk to a firing point with my open carry gun safely in the holster and then clearing it there before I shoot. The gentleman in the shop was unable to help me with my question about the conflict between open carry and the expectation to be unarmed. Mentioned that I should talk to the owner. My thoughts are why does Rick want the responsibility of telling patrons to clear their guns as they arrive on the range? I do not plan on clearing my open carry gun sooner than I need to do so and not until safely at a firing-point on the range before shooting. This is how it was before Rick worked here. I have read all the documents, range rules, and various signs here and I do not see the impetus that tells me that my open carry gun needs to be cleared prior to getting to my firing point on this range. My impression is that this ask is grounded in personal preference and not a logical transition to go from legally armed open carry to unloaded and ready to fire on the range. As if a holstered gun is somehow unsafe. I hope this is addressed at some point because I am confused about what is expected when the state of North Carolina allows me to walk nearly anywhere with my gun but at this range there is no notice to arrive with my open carry gun unloaded. read more

The pistol range is only 7 yards. The entire staff is against anything but hunting rifles and 1911's. They demand you show a tax stamp for pistols they think are sbr's. The range master doesn't even know what an actual tax stamp is because he was looking for postage on the side of a gun..... over all it's horrible and invasive. read more

Be prepared to be treated like a child. I witnessed the range master demean every patron that walked onto the range. Absolutely no trust in civilians/ gun owners. Walked up to the range with my girlfriend to introduce her to firearms. All firearms were cased, I set them on an empty bench and proceeded to look for the range master- as per the instructions from the gentlemen at the counter. The range master, indistinguishable from the other patrons zeroing their bolt actions, was wearing a large flektarn jacket with the German flag. Classic. He walked up to me a asked if I had ever been there. "No, first time". "Obviously not, take a step off my range and read my rules" he said Displayed next to the "No open carry" sign was the range rules, I read it and went back to the guy, he gave me instructions on setting up my targets. The target stands were all rusted and in disrepair. The targets themselves were completely chewed up, in the pile of 15 targets he had, maybe two targets were usable. I set up my target and returned to the bench and waited for the "range hot call" I started uncasing my firearms and getting my girl set up. Then this range master walked up and demanded to see my tax stamps... I complied and showed him. And all of a sudden he starts acting very friendly, as if the equipment I owned sufficed for trust/ firearms safety. -All pistols will be set on the bench, no holstering -No concealed carry or open carry on the range? -Terrible attitudes, I will not return. This type of attitude that I've seen all over the states does not promote the shooting sports. -range master thinks he's the ATF and the authority on tax stamps. What if I refused to show him my stamp? Would he kick me off the range in front of the other patrons? They would probably have thought that SBRs and suppressors are illegal. -unless you are trying to zero your deer rifle, I'd stay away read more

after waiting around for 20-30 minutes for an open lane, they finally decided to call down to range master to see if there were any openings. I guess 15 people standing around in your shop waiting for a lane finally gives reason to check. there were more than enough lanes for us all. bad communication. then we were told that we would be briefed. nope. Range master barked at us to 'read the board'. severely outdated and rough facility. no partitions between lanes so expect everyone's casings flying at you. read more

Good visit this go around. I went a few months ago and the experience was more or less the same as the other negative reviews. This time the guy behind the counter at the shop was friendly enough and not rude answering my questions. Bought some 9mm range ammo for 17.50 for 50 rounds. Arrived at the range where the RSO (Rick) had me read the rules sign and sent me on my way to the pistol range. Just make sure when you approach the rifle range to meet with whoever the RSO is that you have your target (received from the shop) and weapon system with you. I was met with an unfriendly attitude and a "getting-on-to" a few months ago when it was my first time at this range because I didn't have either with me when I walked up. You'll be required to police call your own spent casings which I'm not a huge fan of, I feel like that could be done by the staff at the end of the day to provide more enjoyment for the shooters. Another downside is the target holders/stands don't match up. Once the range went cold and I was able to set up my target I noticed that the target stand didn't fit in the target holder (too small) so I had to grab some broken pieces of wood and stuff them into the target holder in order to stabilize the target from falling over. Big upside for this place is the range itself is pretty, nice outdoor area away from any sort of traffic. Rick is very knowledgeable about his profession and made helpful and relevant recommendations about how and where to improve my weapon (Glock 19 gen 5). Overall I'll definitely come back and would recommend this place to friends. read more

Owner has temperament of a 3 year old. Asked to see if a holster fit my firearm and he said I could if I took it outside. When I try to go outside he starts screaming I'm running away with his holster (a 12 dollar one btw, real expensive ) and has his hand on his gun. Guess his plan was to shoot me in the back. Coward and just unbelievable. Won't spend a dime here. Make sure to wear a bulletproof vest if you stop in. read more

$15 for an entire day of shooting is fair; little pricey if you only plan to shoot for a couple hours. Annual membership is $15 per month / $175 year, which provides a wopping $5 off discount. I think a free month after buying 11 is in order. Previous comments say the range safety officer (RSO) is talkative and blunt. Yes, a retired, older gentlemen likes to chat with people shooting; get over it. If you are nice and respectful he will be as well. Shooting is a fun social activity. Don't show up and be a hermit. Guns are inanimate objects completely harmless until handled by an inexperienced shooter. Abide by the rules and you will be fine. The RSO is responsible for all shooters, experienced warriors and first-time shooters, so don't get mad if he treats you like a child; it's for your safety. Overall I enjoyed my time and will likely return. read more

15 bucks for the day is great, and Rick the RSO is a great guy. The range is only goes to 100 yards (zero for most rifles). This range is as square as it gets. If you want to practice any practical shooting forget it, just point and shoot at paper that's it. read more

Great place to shoot your 22 or a hunting gun, if you show up with anything that looks mildly "tactical" plan on getting talked to like you're an idiot by the RSO. Having to clean up brass that isn't yours. If you even attempt grab your rifle to leave when "tHe LiNe Is CleaR" you'll get yelled at. Great place if you want new shooters to think the rifle/pistol has a mind of its own and to be scared of it. Trash. read more

Went here to practice with a 9mm handgun. To keep it short, I walked in to the main shop and there were a couple of older gentlemen who basically asked me what I wanted. No greeting or anything. When I told them I wanted to rent a 9mm and shoot they said I'd better have brought some ammo because they didn't have any. Pretty unfriendly service , and ammo shortage wasn't noted on their website. Call ahead and expect gruff and unfriendly service if you go. On the positive side, it looks like a beautiful countryside location. read more

Unfriendly range officers, busted targets, and dirty. The downrange area is often flooded and very muddy so make sure you were waterproof boots if it's been raining the day before. The target stands are in a state of disrepair and require some effort to stake into their holders. The benches are very tall making shooting uncomfortable. The firing line is small and often crowded making it unnecessarily loud and cramped. Not worth the price or inconvenience. But despite this there are few other options in the area so go if you must but I recommend traveling farther for a better range. read more

Shot at the range today, rented a gun, met with very friendly staff. The guys inside explained the workings of a revolver and demonstrated other guns as well. Rick at the range, was great as a range master. Helped me a lot and gave lots of pointers. He even brought out a scope for me to check where I was shooting. Overall, very good experience. read more

Every year I bring my family to Emerald Isle for a week at the beach. I always take one morning off to go to Flatwoods Range to shoot pistols and rifles. I think the guns for sale are a little high priced but have bought pistol magazines for several pistols and some extra ammo over the years. The range is basic but is about all I need for a morning at the range. I found the RO's to be professional and safety conscious over the years. Never had any problems. read more

Basically a marine corps range you have to pay to shoot at...there was a guy there dressed head to toe in glock stuff who scoffed at everyone who had a gun he didn't approve of. Then he wanted to talk to me while I was trying to shoot and all he did was brag about all the shooting matches he'd won. Then he wanted to use my gun and ammo to show me how he does it. When i explained to him that i wasent interested and i would apreciate it if he didnt talk to me while i was trying to shoot he got very rude and proceeded to tell everyone that i had no idea what i was doing and that i shouldnt even be allowed to own a gun. it was a very unpleasant experience for someone who doesn't get to shoot very often. I welcome constructive criticism, all he had to do was wait till the line was cleared out and not be a dick about it. read more

I had an horrible experience here today. My husband, brother, and I all decided to go to the range to sight in some of our rifles. This is the only range open near us and against the warnings of some of the negative reviews left on here, we decided to give it a try anyways. It was the wrong decision. Never in my whole life have I been treated so out rightly disrespected and rudely. We first met the man in the store, who by the way, was extremely nice and helpful. He joked around with us and helped us out. He told us where to go, what was expected already at the range, and told us we would need to give our targets *which are considered your receipt* to the range officer Rick. We thanked him, and headed down to the range. The first thing we notice is the huge sign that says "No concealing and carrying beyond this point" which immediately turned my husband and I off because we we conceal and carry everyday and were hoping to practice with them. We once again proceeded anyways, hoping that it turns out better especially after the interaction with the man who handles the store. We walk up and this man *Rick I am guessing but he never even introduced himself to us* comes up to us and very shortly/snappingly says "Have you guys been here before?" We all answer no, smiling at him and excited to start shooting. He raises his voice at us and snaps "Step out here and read this sign" He then just stands there and glares at us until we finish reading. We all tell him we have and he bosses us around in how we go about setting up. He was extremely rude, harsh, and snapped multiple times at us and fellow shooters about the smallest things. Being a young women who has plenty of shooting experience under my belt, knows muzzle awareness, basic and advance gun safety, and how to handle loaded weapons; I have no idea how I would've reacted if I were alone and had been treated like this. I am warning anyone who has thought to over look the other reviews like this and to try to go here, don't. It wasn't worth the crap we went through and didn't enjoy any bit of it. We were treated as if we had no common sense or like we were even human beings for that matter. The second we stepped onto the range, it was as if we were all 4 year olds holding a gun for the first time. The "range officer" or whatever you want to call the rude man who "assisted" us made no attempt to get to know us, to be personable, or even slightly friendly for that matter. He acted as if we couldn't have known anything and he was the only one who does. We are highly disappointed and will never, ever be back. read more

Figured I would try this place out and I was pretty happy with the service. I found them to be friendly and helpful and not pushy which I like, they let you go behind the counters to check out the rifles on the walls, they even had 7mm WSM ammo which I can't find anywhere else and it was for a decent price. Drove down to check out the range, nice covered rifle range looked to go out to 200 yards or so I will probably be back with my rifles to get some shooting in, if you are scared to shoot in the rain, stay at home read more

the range is 15 dollars to shoot and most of the time you have to wait sometimes over an hour. the guns and ammo are way overpriced and poor quality. the staff is rude and unhelpful. and theres a bar where the local rednecks drink and fight no more than 20 feet away. you would be better off asking someone with some land if its ok to go shoot on their property. read more

This range was not the most enjoyable as I am used to more free roam ranges. If you want to be told when you can and cannot shoot every 15 min with a range officer man-handling your firearm to ensure it is clear in those 15 min increments, then this is the place for you. This range is always packed with tons of shooters and sometimes have to wait for a lane to shoot in. There is even a red line you must stand behind while all shooters go down range to pasty and repair targets. Sure, there is absolutely nothing wrong with this way of operation, but its just not what myself and many of my other buddy's where used to. In all range staff and operations run a tight ship which is great for novice or first time shooters who want a hands on, in your face, this is what you do, step by step experience at a gun range. I know it sounds like I am thrashing this place, but I am just not a happy shooter at these types of ranges. My buddy's an I were even over hearing other guys complaining of the same issues we were having with this range. Theres nothing at all wrong with them but i just kind of felt like I was shooting on a Marine Corps range, which any Marines reading this will agree they tend to babysit a bit. Be aware that they have a policy that requires you to be checked in 1 hour before the range closes. It is posted no where, not on the website, not on the property. Last minute today my boys decided they wanted to run out & drop a few rounds. We walked in the gun shop to sign the forms & get targets. I stated why we were there and the guy looks at me and says we don't let anyone go down after 5pm. I looked at my phone because I didn't think it was after 5pm..it was 5:02 and they refused to let us check in. If we are crazy enough to pay the full rates for what might have been 30 minutes of shooting time, I think we should have been able to go down since we were only seconds past the deadline. I explained that we checked the website before we left and it said nothing about a checkin time, he said no it doesn't but thats our policy. I said your really not going to let us go down because we were 120 seconds late?? There was no customer service from him what so ever. I called and spoke to the owner when I got home. Explained the situation, we have used flatwoods since 1993 and were never aware of this policy. The owner said I'm sorry if you can't understand that is our policy. I said it would be a policy I would gladly follow had I been aware of it but it is posted no where and I would think as a long stating customer who arrives 120 seconds past their unknown cutoff time, they could have been polite offered customer service by offering an apology they had failed to post it (owner stated in place 8 years...??but never posted it???), and said since you are only seconds late if you are willing to pay the range price and still only get 20 minutes or so shooting time we will let you go down but in the future you have to be checked in by 5. NOPE...rude & turned us away because of 120 seconds. And the owner was even worse to speak to. Perhaps they think their high prices and lack of customer service doesn't matter as they are the only outdoor shooting range in the area...PATHETIC!!!! read more
