We called Dr. Maija on the recommendation of two of our neighbors. We have a senior dog with arthritis and moderate/severe pain. She put my mind at ease with a few different pain management strategies to try and help our buddy out so he can enjoy his twilight stage. I would recommend Harbor Vets a million times if I could! First off I have to say taking my dog to the vet is a nightmare. last time we went they were forced to muzzle him. my dog is harmless, he loves people and never bites, but he was growling like there was no tomorrow, I didn't want to put him through that again. I found Harbor Vets about a week ago.. Maija and Lauren came today. They were both excellent, I kept my dog in the kitchen while they set up and asked me some questions to better understand his condition, she reviewed my paperwork that I had on him to make sure everything was up to date. upon exam my dog was hyper and wanted to play and jump and lick and wouldn't sit still, but they worked with him. and it went great. She was patient and explained everything to me helping me understand what was going on. They were both very caring and friendly. My dog never growled or tried to bite.. nor did he need a muzzle. I can honestly say I will never go back to the vet... unless it's an absolute must. I would recommend Harbor Vets to anyone and everyone who has a pet. My dog is my world.. I decided to euthanize my elderly dog, after he had been suffering for a long time from a neurological condition that made it very difficult for him to walk, among other problems. Even though I had not used Harbor Vet before, Maija was able to make an appointment very quickly and efficiently. She was very respectful of me and communicated about the process very clearly. She answered my questions patiently. The process was peaceful and kind. I had also decided to bury my dog in a plot of farmland, outside the city. So, instead of having him cremated, I handled and shrouded the body myself. I was pleased that Maija was also respectful of this decision and did not try to persuade me to cremate. So, a very good experience during a very tragic matter. I highly recommend Maija and Harbor Vet. read more

Most of the vets I've been to have been completely impersonal--you make an appointment with the secretary, show up and have a nurse take some notes, see the vet for five minutes, and then pay that same secretary an exorbitant rate for a few shots and a look-over. This has never worked well with my dog. He's, well, a nervous wreck, and generally hyperventilates and poops all over the vet when I take him. It's stressful for everyone. These Harbor Vets, though, are incredible. I had the actual doctor return my initial phone call to ask what was going on with my dog, what his medical history was, what special needs he has, recommended some herbal supplements before the appointment even happened, advised me about weird Mass laws, etc, and what's more--they actually COME to YOUR house for the appointment. It couldn't get more personal. These people obviously really care about animals (and have many of their own) and love what they are doing. You'll still end up paying a pretty penny, but I think that's unavoidable for veterinary services, and they're totally worth it. Call Harbor Vets. If I ever move out of Boston, I think I would consider flying them out to see my dog. They're amazing. read more

My boy is cuddled up now in his bed, seemingly no worse for the wear, after his appointment this afternoon. While the sounds coming out of the bathroom were horrendous (from the easily overwrought feline boy), it warmed my heart to hear how Maija and her assistant Lauren (pls forgive me if I got this wrong, I'm terrible with names...) were talking with him as if he were their own. His anxiety prompted them to have the exam in my tiny bathroom, where he couldn't escape. And, they seemed totally fine with camping out on the bathroom floor with him. I used to hate taking him to the vet... it was always a traumatic day. The trauma didn't really seem to be there at all today. At least, he's not betraying any... he recovered within 10 minutes of their departure. When I would take him to the vet, he would hide for a while after the trip. Now, it will be easy to have the vet come to him. It was a wonderful experience all around (well, maybe the boy would disagree) and I'm very happy to have found these guys on Yelp! We called Maija to come to our home to euthanize our beloved cat Lucy. It was one of the few saddest moments in my life, and I'm so glad Maija was the one we called. She was so gentle and so understanding, and she treated Lucy -- in life and in death -- with such dignity and respect. It was so much better for Lucy to die in a home where she was comfortable than for her to get in a crate and travel in a car (which terrified her) to a hospital. I'd recommend home euthanasia to anyone who needs to go through this heartbreaking process. And I'd recommend Maija without reservations. read more

I love Emily and Maija! And my pets love them, too. We recently moved to Chelsea with two cats (who HATE car rides). When we adopted a dog, we knew getting everyone to the vet was going to be a hassle. We got a great recommendation for Harbor Vets and we are SO pleased! Our dog recognizes Emily through the window when she's coming up the steps and gets SO happy to see his buddy. Our cats love them, too, even if they don't show it with bounding kisses like our dog does. Emily and Maija are both super sweet, professional, and they really care about your pet. They even caught a bartonella infection in one of our cats that our other vet missed completely. When you call or when you email, you talk to one of the vets, not a receptionist. Emily and Maija, the doctors of Harbor Vets, are THE best vets I could've hoped for and I'm so grateful they are out there. They're so well prepared when they come to your home. Their concern for the wellbeing of my furry one is of the utmost importance to them. You can tell when you've found a vet that really knows what they're doing and truly cares and these doctors most surely do. Yes, you do pay for their travel fee but I feel their other fees are quite comparable to any other vets offices. The travel fee worth every penny to me for the avoidance of aggravating and stressing my cat and myself by putting her through the whole crate and car trauma. I can't say enough about this practice. If you have any doubt about trying them out please don't. You and your animals will see what I'm talking about and you won't regret it. read more

Not only do we use these two talented doctors as our own personal vets for our dogs, we recommend them to every client we can. (We own a doggie daycare.) They are prompt, polite, welcoming, compassionate, and kind. One of our dogs is a bit of a baby when it comes to doctoring, so Dr. Emily always makes sure she comes early and stays late to play with him and his favorite toy. Now he wiggles with anticipation when he sees her and associates her with only fun stuff. Harborvets ROCK.... When I moved from Somerville to Chelsea, I was frantic that my home visiting vet wouldn't come out to Chelsea. I took my cats once or twice to VCA in Everett and the whole process of packing my cats up for the ride was so anxiety inducing for them I started asking anyone I could for recommendations of a vet that made house calls. It must've been fate, I was walking along the water over in the Navy Piers Park and came across business cards for a vet that made house calls - seriously? I know I believe in the Law of Attraction but this is unreal. Needless to say, the two docs have been so supportive and helpful and have diagnosed one of my cats with diabetes and have helped me through that whole issue and have just been great with other referrals for things like petsitting. I can't recommend them more. read more

Dr. Curtis has been caring for my cats for a year and a half. I can't say enough good things about Harbor Vets' high level of care. Dr. Curtis is very wise and IMO she is appropriately conservative with her recommendations. Typically veterinarians they want to run extensive diagnostics -- test this , test that. The end result is $1000s of dollar bills, not necessarily a better outcome, and sometimes even a worse outcome due to over prescribing of medicines, plus all the stress the pet goes through with these tests. I knew that I loved her style compared to the dozen or more other vets I've seen, but I now have a real case to compare. I recently had to take my cat to the emergency clinic. They told me that my cat was on his death-bed and was about to have kidney and heart failure. Dr. Curtis had a different diagnosis for him. I was skeptical at the discrepancy of opinions but in the end, she was correct . Cat is stabilized on meds and one would never know he has any medical issues at all! Perhaps it was luck but I fully trust her opinion! Another bonus is that she does not have to include the costs of operating a retail clinic in her pricing; she has no financial gain from testing, etc. Highly recommend! read more

They've been great. And the humans in the house really love them. I wish I could say the cats love them, but, of course, they don't. However, it's much easier on them. Much less stress. No carriers. If your FLuffy or Fido is worth it, consider paying $40 or more for the house call alone, and about 25% more than the standard vet's fee for routine exams, and shots. After learning our sweet cat Willabeest had developed a large tumor in her lung, we spent the next several months watching her activity levels and counting her breaths per minute while holding our own. While far surpassing her original life expectancy per our usual vet, it finally became apparent that the end was near. We didn't want Willa to suffer, and decided it was time to have her put to sleep. After some internet research, we came across Harbor Vets. I contacted Maija, and she responded within minutes -- expressing her sympathy and letting us know her availability. When I responded and let her know that Willa hadn't really eaten in several days (and it didn't look like that was going to change), Maija opened up an additional time slot on an earlier day. We had our first cat (Stella) put to sleep at home as well, but with another vet that left a bit of a sour taste in our mouths (a little bit to be desired in the "bedside manner"), so we were naturally a little bit nervous this time around. But the second Maija walked into the apartment, we could tell this was going to be different. She is a true professional with an incredibly calming and sympathetic demeanor. She clearly explained each step, encouraged us to take our time, and to make sure we were comfortable with what was about to happen (or as comfortable as you can be when you are saying your final goodbye to a beloved pet). And once it was over, she was very delicate with our deceased feline family member. Her love and understanding of animals really shone through during the entire visit. It was as good an experience as you could have given the circumstances. As with other reviewers, we wish we could give more than 5 stars to Harbor Vets. read more

Harbor Vets is, simply put, amazing. They are compassionate, engaged, and knowledgable, as well as excellent at diagnosing, explaining, and administering. You wont regret making them your primary care vet for any animal you love. Otis (never a fan of the vet) was quite calm with them, and willing to be examined snout to tail. Maija and Lauren were able to quickly and clearly explain what was going on, articulating medical-speak into fluent dog owner speak. Harbor Vets feels like a old-school practice, where doctors take their time, know the patients, and really deeply care about them. They were always quick to respond via email, and were incredibly accommodating in terms of schedule and time spent with us. When Otis' time came, they were absolutely amazing. Maija came at 9:00 the night before her vacation to put him to sleep. As I'm sure you can imagine, it was an incredibly emotional and painful time for us. Maija's calm, nurturing demeanor, combined with her skills, made it as easy and kind as it could be, both for us as well as him. She was compassionate, patient, and walked us through everything. She described what would happen in a way that really reassured us and made it easier to go through with what we had to do. The actual process itself was clearly painless, calm, and relaxing for our dog, and Maija's bedside manner was fundamental to the quality of care. I only wish i had the vocabulary to properly describe how amazingly knowledgable, sweet and compassionate they are. 'Seriously off the charts' does not even begin to describe it. I love this practice, I'm just sorry I moved out of the coverage area. Dr. Curtis is wonderful, compassionate, gentle, friendly and very reasonable. She responds quickly to e-mail and is flexible when scheduling appointments. My cats really appreciate not having to go in the car to the vet. I get detailed invoices sent to me (for record keeping). I really appreciate how she gives cats injections; using 3 year vaccinations to minimize injections and injecting the legs to reduce chance of a cancerous reaction. I used to use Porter Vets but after moving from near Davis Sq. to East Somerville I needed to find a better option that didn't involve driving across town. Because of that we found Harbor Vet House Calls. I could go on and on about Maija and how awsome she is at her job. My cats have both passed but she gave them the best care in the last part of their years and not having to drag two old cats to the vet was a blessing (neither really cared for the car potion of the trip). When it came time to put my oldest cat (17 at the time) to sleep, Maija came to the house and we were able to spend quality time with him near the end instead of having to stress him (and us) out. The younger cat, unfortunately, was not able to share this as he developed an issue in the middle of the night (You can find my review of our less than adequate experience at Angell elsewhere on this site). I would recommend Harbor Vets to everyone (and I have) and, when we decide to get a new pet, Maija will be the only person I ever call on for their care. I cannot say enough great things about Maija and her assistant. My cat Bear has become way to difficult to bring to the vet. He gets very bad anxiety and the last time we brought him for his rabies shot, his vet wasn't able to do anything. It's gets to the point where they're afraid he's going to hurt himself. He's a very persistant cat and he doesn't just give up after a bit. He just doesn't like being anywhere but home. She recommended trying Harbor Vet and I'm SO glad I went with them. I actually wish I knew about them sooner. They are so nice and so professional and have patient/calming personalities. Well, if you have to have a stranger come over during one of the most intimate and heartbreaking moments of your life, Majia is the person for the job. After a long three and a half year illness, my soulmate cat Trout had finally reached the end. I reached out to Majia on a Thursday night, and she came to put my cat to sleep the next morning at 11am, before leaving on a trip with her family. I had been beyond terrified of this moment for YEARS, thinking there was no way I could survive it. But I did, and a big part of what made it ok was that Majia handled everything perfectly, beginning to end. She was patient, kind, loving towards my cat, gave me privacy in the right moments, and knew how to expertly handle each step of the process (both medically and emotionally). One part of the process that I was most terrified of was what it would be like when she took my cat away from my apartment at the end. I loved how it went, and that she did some things to, in her words, give my cat "privacy." She also told me she would treat Trout's body like she was one of her own cats, which gave me a lot of comfort. I had spoken to a few other house call vets on the phone, but there was something that didn't sit right with me with all of them. I had zero space for anyone to be anything but 1 million percent gentle and sensitive with me and the situation. I'm so glad I waited for Majai (which I did largely in part because of her Yelp reviews). A big part of why I'm able to have as much peace as I currently do about the situation is because the event itself was handled really perfectly by her. There were no parts that I wish were different, beyond wishing that my sweet cat was still here. read more

If I could give 10 stars, I would. Maija is so incredibly kind and compassionate. She helped me with euthanasia of two elderly cats in my home. My cats passed peacefully in a familiar setting with loved ones around, not having to go through the unpleasant and scary experience of being driven to the vet's office during their final hours. Very difficult for any pet owner to go through, but it was quite a bit easier thanks to her. Highly recommended. read more
