For context to this review, I am the child of a former resident at Bayshore and had experienced the…read morelocation multiple times firsthand whenever I visited. This location, although beautifully designed and situated on the intercoastal, unfortunately, lacks in many critical areas of guest welfare. The specifics are as follows.
If you are a guest with FULL capabilities (e.g., able to walk, eat on your own and therefore take full advantage of all the activities and benefits), I could understand why Bayshore would be an attraction. I met many residents who originated in colder climates and have found the Hilton Head Island weather more ideal for their retirement years.
For residents who have or need any additional care is where Bayshore goes well off its rails. The facility doesn't employ Resident Nurses (RNs) in any capacity other than upper management; their presence is extremely limited even at that level. I met one RN in total on every visit. Most of the 'nurses' and 'aides' are general staff members, and I would guess their training was almost entirely on the job. Having had a few conversations with 'key staff,' I learned they had very limited prior experience. This is concerning and evident as I witnessed my parent's care during their stay.
Like most older adults, there comes a time when they become less ambulatory. My parent also experienced this phase when we witnessed a steep drop-off in quality care. Residents are provided 'nurse call buttons' to wear in the event they require any level of immediate attention. Almost every time my parent pressed the button, aides would not arrive or respond until 30-120 minutes after. On one occasion, I witnessed my parent pressing the button as they needed to use the bathroom (legal right residents must be allowed according to law btw), and nobody arrived. 20 minutes after, the button was pushed, we were finally visited by an aide who informed us they were busy and in a meeting and that my parent should just use their briefs. Insane and inhumane. After another 70 minutes and still no visit from an aide, I personally walked to the closest staff station on the floor only to find ~6 women standing around chatting and eating chips. I reminded them that my parent was still waiting for support, and they responded that they'd get to us asap. It was another 15 minutes before anyone showed - which was too late.
The unfortunate aspect of this ordeal is that the response described above is constant, not the occasional experience. Unacceptable - especially at the rates they charge.
I can go on and on with numerous observations, and I urge anyone considering this facility to either reconsider or evaluate what is critical to your family members' needs. The moment residents require ANY nursing level support is the moment things will likely go wrong. I don't want to hear about staffing issues due to labor shortage - they sure seem like they had enough staff. The focus should be on ensuring staff has compassion, empathy, proper nursing skills, and an overall desire to be helpful. How about training? Anyone can work a fry machine at Mcdonald's. However, this type of work requires a special individual. I'm just not sure Bayshore has an abundance of those types of individuals. That said, a handful of wonderful staff members and aides seem to care (one from the UK that I recall meeting and experiencing); however, the vast majority honestly don't seem to care much, including its leadership.
For all residents, the food options need to be questioned from a nutritional standpoint. Anyone with any special dietary concern seems to consistently get overlooked and made to feel like they're a bother. The attitude comes from leadership and trickles down to the workforce.
I wish this review were better; however, I need to be honest to warn others that the assumption their family members are receiving the ultimate care, as Bayshore and its CEO promise. It just won't be so.
I can provide numerous observations and experiences and decided to limit to the few mentioned above for ease of reading and as a warning to others. If you are considering using Bayshore. I urge you to seek reviews from current residents without the administration finding out, as they will do their best to provide you with only a censored pre-selected group.
