I decided to use a different Funeral Director and once we receive the body, I can tell that it had not been and bombed professionally. My mother did not look anything like herself, and the Funeral Home held her body an extra two days instead of just transferring it to the new Funeral Director. On top of that, the pricing was different than what was quoted to me and I decided not to use them at all. I would not recommend them , and if you want your loved one to look like they're sleeping and not look like a dead then please don't use this Funeral Home.. I will be looking into suing the Wood Funeral Home.

The down side the business office is up a steep set of steps too much for older family members and weak to navigate. Everyone was professional and pleasant. The recommend service providers such as printers for the obituary and florist worked nicely. All cost were aligned with industry standards. We had to fight to extend it to a hour. There was no guest book, (extra). The decor looked like a yard sale exploded inside the place. Guests had to ask repeatedly for "Funeral" Flags for the cars. The body was picked up 2 blocks from the home, the cemetery is only a few miles from the home and it was held on a Saturday during the Philadelphia Bike Race, a few feet from the festivities, so, it was not a high demand time for them. It was basically a family gathering to say goodbye to a life long lived and we felt as if we were bothering them because it was not a more expensive funeral. As a small businesswoman, I value all customers and every sale. I felt Fitzpatrick, does not. Spending less is not a crime or something to be ashamed of. Tsk tsk.

I haven't had to call about anything, but when I needed an answer, Ivy Hill quickly returned my calls. Actually, I do need a service: my paternal grandparents are also buried at Ivy Hill, and I need to find out the cost of cleaning their headstone. Ivy Hill keeps the cemetery clear of debris and old flowers, thank you.

They offer traditional in ground burials, mausoleum, cremation, and stand alone cabinets. Unfortunately, I have been to a burial and a cremation ceremony in the last month at Ivy Hill. They also offer a chapel that is open daily if you want to visit. The chapel can hold up to 35 people. This was my first time going to a cremation ceremony. They have a section of the Cemetery that they scatter the ashes. The ashes are handled with care. It is very heartbreaking seeing your love ones ashes scattered. Even though the Cemetery is lovely, I hope I don't have to go back there anytime soon.

It took almost a month to get 1 death certificate and another month to get the rest of the death certificates and when I did it wasn't the amount I was told I would get. Everyone was very helpful, respectful and professional. The undertakers arrived promptly when we called. I was afraid of having to witness a morbid scene of having the body wrapped in a bag but they handled it so delicately that it wasn't traumatizing for me. They wore nice black suits and they were extremely careful on handling the body. Since we weren't experienced on the funeral process, they took us through all the steps and took care of legal tasks like Social Security. They have the meeting room in the basement to go through all the prayer cards and options for burial, cemetery, church, limo service, flowers. It is a little chilly down there and I did remember seeing they had a coffee machine. Further down is the casket room where you can select the interior and exterior of the casket or urn other customizations and burial items. The day before the funeral we were able to view our mother in her casket. I wasn't happy with the lipstick since she didn't wear much makeup and I should have requested a blanket for her legs but I thought she still looked beautiful. They have a close relationship to my parish, St. Thomas Aquinas and handled the arrangements. With the help of the church and our close family friends, we were able to put together a lovely funeral with the cantor we requested and led by the wonderful Monsignor Shields. The limo arrived and took us to the cemetery, SS Peter and Paul in Springfield, PA. Everything went great but I was upset that they will not lower the casket until everyone is away. The contract was priced reasonably and they only contacted us once to see if we knew the status of the life insurance processing stage. They didn't get paid until around September/October but they were very patient. I highly recommend this funeral home. They are located on Broad Street in South Philly not far from Methodist Hospital. Edit - Just something I remembered from the funeral: they do NOT let you watch them fill the grave. They won't start until you leave the area. FYI.

Now, the Palmer Cemetery isn't as nice as say St. Louis in N'Orleans or Pere-Lachaise in Paris…read more(actually, what is as beautiful as that?), but it really is a cool cemetery. It's not that big, but it does have some nice stones. And then there's the markers that are just small wood crosses, which look man made and probably are, with the names carved into the cross wood. I imagine that these are there because that's what the people could afford. See, if you live in Fishtown, you get a free plot in Palmer Cemetery! Awesome, I've already picked out my spot, so no one take it. It's near the corner where the ground rises up to a small mound. Nice! But, yes it really is a neat place to walk around or through on a brisk fall day. Maybe even have a picnic like the good old days.
