West Laurel Hill Cemetery - Duffys Cut memorial

    West Laurel Hill Cemetery

Sometimes, you discover a place that is like a TARDIS. Meaning: It's bigger on the inside. It…read morealso has elements of time travel, in that there are final resting places of historical importance, and also that visiting them takes you back in time, visiting gravestones that were created hundreds of years ago. West Laurel Hill is one of those places. This cemetery should not be confused with the more prominent Laurel Hill Cemetery, located across the Schuykill river. When you come upon. West Laurel Hill, it looks like it's a modest cemetery. As you explore, it seems to unfold, more and more and more. This is true no matter which entrance you use. One of the most historical graves is also a monument to the 57 Irish Immigrants who perished at Duffy's Cut. They were all hired in unscrupulous ways to build railroad tracks. They were murdered and buried in a mass grave near Malvern...almost forgotten, until their remains were found. Some of the remains were moved to West Laurel Hill where they rest with a monument to all. Every year there is a ceremony remembering these unfortunate souls. This was why Lion and I first visited, to participate in this cemetery. Since it was a beautiful spring day, we decided to walk some of the paths, where we quickly realized just how much there was. We'll surely return again and again to this beautiful, serene place to visit. Highly recommend.

Everything was taken care starting the moment we arrived until the last of us left the lovely luncheon. This was one of the most difficult days of my life and I can't thank them enough for making it run smoothly. Everyone who attended remarked what a lovely place which made me believe I made the best choice for our family. Thank you one and all.

After my latest experience with this funeral home, I felt I had to write a review…read more My father's cemation service was Feb 5, 2015. We paid for the urn, the niche as well as the processing fee to open and close the niche after urn placement. My brother and I attempted to visit our father on Father's day June 21, 2015 and to our dismay, we could not find our father. This baffled us because we had paid everything in full. We contact the furneral home office on Father's Day but they had gone for the day. The answering service was able to reach Kevin McCormick, who we spoke to back in February to make urn/niche arrangements. He did not remember us but said that he'd look into the matter the next day. It started to get later in the day (and seeing how they close at 2pm), I faxed a copy of the invoice where we paid for all services upfront along with a note advising our father was not in the memorial in the niche we paid for. At 3:43pm, Kevin calls advising the urn was not placed in the niche because he was waiting to hear back from my brother on scheduling the urn ceremony and to sign a permit??? My brother and I indicated we did not need an urn ceremy and urn shoudl be placed in the niche. Kevin advised his notes did not reflect that. So guests who are greiving from a death should check his notes to ensure he's writing down the correct information? After further questions to Kevin about this "urn scheduling" i was told that the urn scheduling can only be done during the week between 9 and 2pm as thats what we paid for and they need 2 days notice. When was that communicated back in February? Nope because we told Kevin that we did not want an urn ceremony. My issue: Where was the follow up from the funeral home to my brother or myself about this "urn scheduling" especially since full payment was made and all services were not rendered? Here we are some 4+ months later and now we're told about scheduling an urn ceremony??? I feel like Kevin McCormick was not empathetic about what has occurred (or what did not occur). It's really sad when people are not accountable for their failed actions and then make you think it's your fault.
