I was impressed with the two men who guided me where to park (I was arriving rather late) so that I could be in the line of vehicles to the graveside ceremonies. They then asked if I knew where the home was (There are several funeral homes on this stretch of Paulsboro roadway.). Walking into the funeral home I could see the home's representatives positioned where they could answer questions but not in the way of any visitor. The viewing room was attractive and not too somber. There was a well thought out pattern to share condolences with the family. The funeral director's role in the ceremony was handled professionally without being presumptive of the family's and clergy's role in the service. As I left still mourning my friend's unexpected passing I thought that at least he was given a quality farewell by this funeral home.

The room the service was held in was roomy and comfortable. Kudos for making what could have been a very sad day one that was filled with pure love.

Oakland is a very old cemetery right next to friends hospital. If you tour the graveyard you will…read moresee some plots that are over 100 years old. My family is buried there and for years the maintanence staff took very good care of it but things change over time. We had planted bushes as well as flowers that would reappear year after year & things were fine for decades but now for the sake of speed the gang mowers they use have wiped out the entire garden which we replanted and they mowed it over again. Talking with management the place is not doing well, they closed down their greenhouses and killed a decades old passion plant that was so beautiful that they had sold pieces that could be rooted and grow at your home. That was a sin. Everything today is on a steady decline and this graveyard can not escape it because the families who supported it are now buried there. Regardless it is worth considering for your loved one.

I go here to enjoy a quiet evening and to ponder Philadelphia's history through its deceased inhabitants. Thinking about the meaning of it all goes really well in this place. I like this place a lot. I wish I could work there. The management of the cemetery takes a rather unorthodox approach to marketing. They refuse to have a web presence. They don't want a website or social media, even when it is offered to them for free. I wonder if that will spell doom for this place sooner that it deserves.

Montefiore Cemetery in Jenkintown, PA, takes its name from the Montefiore family, historic and well…read moreknown Jewish diplomats and bankers originally from the Iberian Peninsula, who ultimately came to America to broaden their markets and wealth. Although a different family has owned/operated this eternal resting place since 1910, they chose the name well. These were Sephardic Jews who spoke Ladino, a mix of Hebrew, old Spanish and North African dialects, and who maintained many of the ancient traditions while European Jewry suffered through the Dark Ages. The meaning of Montefiore in English is, "Flower Mountain." Very appropriate for the gentle rolling fields where so many Philadelphians are laid to rest. Sadly, I was here for the second time, again to bear witness and offer prayerful remembrance to a dear friend. Gone too soon, her children, siblings and even her 90+ year old mother gathered at graveside to honor the end of life and the beginning of a new adventure beyond our mortal grasp. I was asked to be a pallbearer. It was her last request of me, although I was unaware until approached at the funeral home by her husband. That, and reciting the Mourners' Kaddish at graveside, were the least I could do. I noticed the wind gently swaying the budded branches as I bent down to pick up a handful of earth to drop on her plain pine casket. I knew it was my dearly departed old friend caressing my cheeks in gratitude for granting her last wish. There was a tear mixed with that last bit of soil I rubbed in my hands as I walked slowly back to my car.
