This place has been bookmarked for too long, to be honest I think I was a bit over excited when Dan suggested we try it out. There's something really drawing about the whole place, I mean there's neon lemon signs for goodness sake. I'd been to other bubble tea places before, and I think the Happy Lemon focuses less on bubble tea flavours and varieties and more on differed oddities all together. You also have more customisation here than ever, what kind of sweetness you have have your drink (30%,50%,100% etc.) our server even made suggestions and recommendations on what we ordered. She was also really patient whilst we tried out the different 'cheese foams'. This place is perfect if you want a drink but are bored of coffee and don't fancy alcohol. The Birmingham Happy Lemon is a fairly new bubble tea and specialty drink store with inspired flavours that you'd find on the streets of Taipei. The chain is barely a decade old and already has amassed 500+ stores across the world. While the name suggests an abundance of lemons, you'll find that and more with a plethora of very interesting boba combinations. Some of the menu items are milk based while others are simply a refreshing tea. In total, you have drinks divided into the following categories: milk tea, rock salted cheese, lemon smoothies, milk tea smoothies, fresh lemon tea, fruit matcha latte, and a variety of specialty drinks. This is the first boba bar I've seen with rock salted cheese as a flavour, and it's apparently one of their more well-known drinks. Happy Lemon is well sited between New Street Station and the Chinese Quarter. I've found that it's the perfect after dinner treat on the way home or a good way to jump-start a night out. The drinks come in a medium or large size, and the price can vary widely depending on what ingredients you request. There is also an additional surcharge to make some of the drinks hot. I've tried a couple of the drinks so far, and I feel that their fresh teas are a real strength of the brand. They are seriously refreshing, with most balancing between sweet and sour on the flavour profile. I can see myself drinking them a lot more this summer when it's warm out. I've also tried their more experimental flavours, such as the red bean & pudding matcha latte made hot. It's basically caramel (or mango) pudding mixed with milk and red beans. As a hot drink, it's great on cold nights. The drink may sound unconventional for some people, but it's worth trying at least once. If you like Happy Lemon's drinks and plan on visiting here often, I suggest signing up for their 'LoyalTea' loyalty card. It costs £5 up front, but you get a free drink of your choice. Each drink purchased gives you 1 point, which can either be redeemed for Happy Lemon branded merchandise (Happy Lemon iPhone case here I come) or at 10 points, a free drink. Overall, Happy Lemon does a great job focusing on one product that it does really well. read more

Lovely little bubble tea shop recently opened halfway between New Street Station and the Arcadian. Happy Lemon has a ton of choice for flavors with customizable sweetness or saltiness. Drinks even feature a line of salty cheese topping that looks silky and smooth - will have to give this sweet and salty concoction a try. I got the kumquat lemonade with 70% sweetness and tapioca bubbles. It was refreshing and tangy with the perfect balance of tart and sweet. Happy Lemon offers a tiny cup size takeaway bag for easy carrying which is quite cute. I opted to not have a bag - cups are topped with traditional sealing plastic film 'lids' so no worries of spillage. I like how late the shop stays open. It's so nice to have a variety of refreshing beverages to sip on the train home. read more

New bubble tea and shake shop pretty recently opened near the Arcadian...this place has a serious packed me u of drinks! Myself and Amy B went by to check it out last week and I'm happy to say this is somewhere I would definitely return to. The staff are really friendly and do everything they can to explain the menu items fully. The lady serving us even gave us both some salted cheese in small cups to make sure we liked it before parting with our pounds. I went for a sweetened green tea with salted cheese topping. I have to say it worked really well. The cheese os more like a cream so it works well with the green tea flavour. Don't be put off by the unusual names and drink options here. This place is definitely worth a visit. read more

Obnoxious and ill-mannered staff, not quite sure how they were hired in the first place to be honest. Customer service was atrocious. The woman that served us was clearly not a HAPPY lemon but an extremely sour faced one. Was greeted with a death glare instead of a hello. Whilst making our order, she was very unresponsive. She did not say a single thing and looked like she was irritated by the fact that she had customers. When our order was done, she called it out in Chinese (which we do not understand), thus we had to wait until another member of staff was available in order to confirm if the drink was ours. Not sure who spit in her bubble tea, but I wouldn't be surprised if she spat in mine. I have been enough times to say that this is their standard quality of 'customer service'. On another occasion, I have also witnessed a member of staff eating tapioca directly out of a ladle which is absolutely repulsive. Talk about making yourself at home. Not sure if she put it back in. Have also seen members of staff wearing their masks under their chins whilst making the drinks, which is highly concerning considering the fact that we are in the midst of a pandemic. If you're not going to wear your mask properly for the sake of corona, at least wear it to spare your customers from having to witness your dismal demeanours. 10/10 would recommend if you want to get some first-hand experience in being treated like shit. read more

I LOVE Bubble Tea, and Happy Lemon offers many different selections of fresh tea flavours. I especially enjoy their sweet green tea with rock salted cheese. My husband likes the fresh lemon and honey green tea. They have another location in London China Town, but this Birmingham China Town location is brand new. I am giving this location 5-stars on the drinks. They were on point and tasted great! But there was a massive queue, so from start to finish I think we were there 20 minutes. The decor is very cute and happy... and the iconic Happy Lemon statue stands in front of their store to snap a photo with. If you are a bubble tea fan, be sure to check it out. But there was a massive queue, so from start to finish I think i was there about 10 minutes. My first visit to the Birmingham branch as I had bought a drink at the london China town one. I last bought one of the specials, think it was a matchachino coffee which I didn't really like. This time I had the mango green tea. She told me it came with no toppings so I had the tapioca balls which was 50p more. I definitely liked the mango green tea better! I had normal sweetness which was still very sweet! The balls are very chewy but in a good way! I've picked up a takeaway menu and will tick off what I've tried though won't be buying one every week, maybe at least one per month as I really must diet!!! Lol Wish I had bought a loyalty card to get one of their cutie things, as now I've bought two drinks! Next time I will!! read more

Finally! An awesome bubble tea place in Birmingham. There are a few other bubble tea joints in Brum that are nice, but Happy Lemon takes the cake (it's a franchise with over 800 branches worldwide, and it knows what it's doing). So many flavors and options for constructing a beverage to suit everyone's taste-- they have pudding and red bean, for example, and their rock salted cheese is surprisingly delicious. Walking into Happy Lemon is a bit like walking into a crazy alternate world where everything is bright, heavily lit and just good fun, makes a change on a dull day (or night, it's open till around 10pm) in Brum. Bubble tea is the headline here, in a ton of different types (which for the uninitiated will be difficult to understand, they only seem to have a full menu on the counter) but when somewhere does a matcha latte with...rock salted cheese topping I'm clearly going to board the crazy train and get some! Happily the crazy is also really tasty, I will be getting a season pass. The place itself is just a takeout place, a counter to order at and a few stools to sit and wait for it to be made up but it's warm enough and stops you getting wet. Firstly, the bubble teas are at least as good as Chatime. I am in no way disputing the quality of their products. It is a franchise that is throughout Asia Pacific and about 4 locations in the UK. I do love the Rock Salt Cheese option teas. You just can't get it anywhere else. My main gripe with the place is that some of the staff are incredibly surly. When they are not chatting away to their loyal student customers, they break off from their long conversation to finally serve you. About two members of staff behave as if it is an irritant that you speak English to them. Last time I went, I got my 'yakult lemon smoothie' drink luke-warm with just one ice cube in it and a smaller size than I ordered. He just wasn't bothered at all. I highly regret taking out a 'loyaltea card' with them. 3 out of the 4 times I've been, they've acted like I'm a pain in the @ss for simply wanting a drink with little/no customisation. I persevered for a while thinking, 'Oh at least it is authentic'. I think I will stick to Cafe Chino from now on. The girls that work there are always friendly and polite and even recommend certain teas. No bad atmosphere at all. read more

Happy Lemon is one of the most unique and quirkiest places in the centre of Birmingham. I want to start my review with the following, this would not be my normal choice of place to go for coffee or a drink but I went on the recommendation of a number of my fellow Yelpers. And I have to start by saying I was pleasantly surprised the menu is awesome, with a good selection of drinks to suit a range of tastes. I ended up having a mango and jelly smoothie, which was very nice and there were a number of cheese coffee drinks which were again very nice. The staff were friendly and helpful and offered to go through the menu with me if i didn't understand anything. The loyalty card is well worth looking into if you are going to come back. Ahh totally love this little place! Apparently it's a chain but I'd never heard of it before. It's situated in China town but basically it's only a 3 min walk from new street station/grand central, so really convenient:) they do all sorts of drinks to take away-bubble tea, slushes, teas and coffees. I had a kumquat and lemon slushy on Wednesday and it was delicious. I have had the mocha coffee in the past though and really didn't like it-it's all a question of taste, I'm slowly working my way through the menu! They have a loyalty/points card system where you can build up to get merchandise-I'm a total sucker for this sort of thing!! Worth stopping by in any case!:) read more

Very glad when Amy suggested trying out this place. I had previously passed it and been intrigued and my visit very much lived up to expectations. I gave visited twice now and loved both offerings. First time round I had the tiramisu rock salt cheese cold drink and the second time the banana matcha smoothie. Both were very yummy, I was surprised to enjoy the first drink because who would think cheese would be so nice in it! It tastes more salty than cheesy but it was really nicely and weirdly suited to the drink. Not a very big space but has a few seats. Lots of offerings too so may be worth having a look at a menu beforehand read more

Very unhappy with the Birmingham branch as i feel like they are dishonest. There are always saying cash only because the machine has broken down have no signs to say cash only. They also say that delivery is a £4 delivery fee with cash only payment also. This is clearly untrue as deliveroo is associated with happy lemon. read more
