My first time experiencing medical gaslighting was unfortunately here at happy feet. My foot infection went on longer than it should have and I sought for care elsewhere as the pain was unbearable. Turned out I had MRSA staph infection. I came to Happy Feet because of its raving yelp reviews and started seeing Dr. Lords for several months... And each visit made me doubt his level of care. My last visit on 9/28/23 was a confirmation that I needed to find a new podiatrist. I received my second steroid shot on Tuesday and it was very painful. At night, I woke up every 3 hrs in pain and the swelling was worse each day, I could tell something was off. Wednesday I emailed Dr. Lords pictures of my foot and he called me saying it didn't look like an infection. Thursday morning I called to come in because the pain was unbearable. As I was in the waiting room, I heard him make a comment to a staff member on how I was able to walk in if my pain level was noted at a "7". When he saw me, I explained how I wanted antibiotics as the pain was increasing. I explained that I felt sharp radiating pain on the sole and arch of my foot. He dismissed it and said it was because of the way I was walking that caused the discomfort. He continued to suggest it was a cortisone flare and made various remarks about how it wasn't an infection, "I'm 80% sure this isn't an infection but a flare..." I asked what my options were for immediate relief. He suggested soft tissue removal surgery and I was hesitant about it and inquired about other non invasive methods. He didn't have any for me. As I was about to leave, he spoke harshly to his employee. He asked if she took my temperature and told her to (as it was missing on the form). "Look at me when I'm trying to tell you something..." the words and tone used were very uncomfortable for me to witness as a patient, I felt so bad for her, I hope she finds work elsewhere. He prescribed me amoxicillin and when I arrived at my pharmacy, they said they haven't received anything. I called his office and the front desk staff said he hasn't gotten to it and that he usually sends them over at the end of the day (which would've been 5pm, I came in at 9am). I was livid and looked for a new podiatrist. I luckily got an appt the same day at 1:45pm, immediately the new Dr said it looked like I had abscess in the swelling and he drained it. There was so much pus coming out, he couldn't believe it. He said surgery wasn't necessary and I felt immediate relief on my foot and my mental state. My experience overall: -Each visit, it seemed like the treatment options for me were to have an expensive procedure, surgery or to buy products. I felt like he was pushing unnecessary things to make money. -He made inappropriate comments during the visit, ie he'd say jokes about the girth of the needle mattering more as opposed to its length, before he administered my first steroid shot. Who still thinks these jokes are actually funny? -He was demeaning to his employee right in front of me which I thought was very unprofessional and humiliating. -He scoffed at the level of pain I documented, I could hear him clearly comment on it to his workers as I was in the waiting room. -Most importantly, I didn't feel heard as a patient and his negligent care led my foot to being infected longer than it should have. I cannot imagine having gone the surgical route with him, and I am concerned to see his practice still operating if his behavior does not change. read more

Visit with the doctor went well. It's unfortuante that his billing department is careless and uncommunicative. As a healthcare provider at a small private practice similar to this one, I know firsthand that the office staff represents his practice too. Unfortunately his staff have proven over and over again that they are not adequately trained. 1) I receive a bill. They didn't save my insurance info so they billed me instead. Weird to not even let me know they lost my insurance info and to just charge me the full cash amount, but okay. Also, I provided them my insurance info on the phone before I even made my appointment because I wanted to ensure they accepted my insurance so I know they knew I wasn't a cash patient. 2) Months later, I receive an adjusted bill after the insurance payment. I call them to pay the bill. Billing department is on vacation. When they finally call back, I give them my credit card info over the phone. I'm overseas paying an international fee to pay this bill because they finally called me back after months of back and forth. I think it's finally done. 4) I receive another bill. Weird to not let me know they lost my credit card info so they can't process the payment, but okay. I call them on a weekday during business hours to pay for it and they don't pick up. I left them a message with time/date to call, as per their instructions. I NEVER GET A CALL BACK. 5. I receive another bill. This time, it has a note saying that they will be sending my bill to collections. I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO PAY THIS $51 BILL FOR **LITERALLY MONTHS.** Doc, please have your billing department: PICK UP THE PHONE OR CALL ME BACK. TAKE MY PAYMENT (AGAIN) AND RUN IT THROUGH THIS TIME. read more

My grandma is currently on hospice at home and is bed bound. She was having some pain in her big toe and needed to be seen for a possible ingrown toe nail. Dr. Lords came to us on a house call and we are so grateful for the quality of care, and kindness. He did treatment and she already feels relief. Just got another bill 3 months later. I think my insurance and I have paid over $1,000 for 2 office visits and about 10 minutes of actually seeing the doctor. No wonder they make so much money. Also they do not have their own X-ray machines, imagine that someone that needs to look at bones and tissue not having an x-ray machine, and will send you out to Placentia Hospital, which will charge your insurance $3000 for basic x-rays! read more

As previous posts mention, the level of incompetence of the doctor and his office staff is absolutely infuriating. This is clearly a business on the brink of going under and the quality of care and bill management is reflective of that. We went here to get insoles, however, it took several months for the doctor to get the insoles right. Each time we dropped off the unusable insoles to be corrected, we were charged for an "office visit" that entailed a two minute conversation that didn't involve even taking off the shoes or having a foot examination. This means that we paid hundreds of dollars for insoles that couldn't be used, and then paid over $100 in co-pays for the following "office visits." It's almost like dragging a patient through several unnecessary "office visits" is better for the business than actually resolving a person's pain issues, isn't it? read more

Very satisfied with the visit I had at Happy Feet. I'm a 3x a week golfer and somehow managed to injure my foot. I walked into the office expecting to have to return at a later time with an appointment. I was so relieved when the staff was able to squeeze me in at that time. I was really in a lot of pain. Doc was on time and had me in and out with a diagnosis and recommendations for healing within 20 min. The staff is the sweetest! And Doc is very knowledgeable! I thought by the reviews this would be a good place to get custom insoles made. Made the appointment, gave them my insurance info and asked to have benefits verified before the appt. Showed up for the appointment to find out they hadn't verified payment. Had the appointment and then they wanted me to pay out of pocket for something my insurance covers 100% until they could verify benefits. After 4 months of back and forth trying to get my benefits verified they said they're out of network so my insurance won't pay anything. That's a lie because I have a PPO that pays 70% for out of network and if they're out of network they would have known right away if they just didn't accept blue cross. They're either lazy, incompitant or unethical and they just blame their third party billing office. My wife went to another local place and everything was smooth, covered and she received the insoles in two weeks. What a waste of 4 months. read more

First time I have been to Dr. Robert Lords for foot pain, the whole process from booking an appointment to checking in and see the Dr. has been efficient and friendly. Dr. Lord took time to examine well, explaining the cause and remedy in detail and as well as offering to improve the insoles I currently have rather than trying to get me new ones. I came from Santa Clarita to bring my grandmother in for an exam for some huge skin growths on her toes at a dermatologist up the street from here. Unfortunately they were unable to treat my grandma & said we would need to go to a podiatrist. With a bummed demeanor, I got on Yelp to start searching for a podiatrist. I called the closest location to set an apt and I was glad that Courtney answered the phone (with only 45 min to close) and I explained my situation. Courtney asked the Doc if we could squeeze in a quick exam and to my greatest surprise they actually welcomed us to come in!! So in 5 minutes we got right to the location and we're pleasantly greeted by their staff. Took 5 minutes to do the paperwork and got grandma in to see Dr. Rob! He was super chill, patient and nice. He was able to diagnose my grandma's feet condition immediately. He got right to it, he gave his honest opinion and told us what needed to be done.. I had no idea it would be possible to get this all done today... he removed all of the growths and said reassured my grandmother that this is a common thing that just needs to be addressed in a maintenance matter... good to know... we'll be back here for maintenance. Great doctor, great staff, great practice! I'll spare the photos... Now my grandma has new feet! Now she can fit her shoes better. I also picked up some foot cream and advice for my own feet and pedicure treatments. Oh yeah... He also does house calls. Bottom Line: Their receptionist is racist. My daughter and I have been coming here for close to a year and never had an issue. They lost their receptionist and hired a new one and ever since then we have had issues. This review was hard because I went to high school with Dr. Lords. I pray this changes so I can erase it, but as a business owner you become complicit when you do not take action. I believe her name is Jessica. I have addressed Jessica with Dr Lords and his wife, it seems covid makes help hard to find and they just recently lost another receptionist without notice, and this has compromised their judgment. On our last attempt to make an appointment Jessica refused to make an appointment. If you are Black or Mexican you have been warned. Dr Lords gets an extra star because he is a good doctor. I had the privilege of seeing both Dr. Lords. They both are great! I am struggling from Plantar Fasciitis and they gave me the shot in my foot. Those things help big time! I play a lot of basketball and I need to be up to par for all the tournaments that I play. They are looking into more in depth about my foot problem. They have friendly staff here and they really work with you in getting in for an appointment. There new location is bigger and nicer. Easy to park and you can walk right in. Had my first appt. today with Dr Rob.... I have been suffering with bone spurs for 10+ years trying to resolve myself with stretching etc. having finally reached my breaking point I came in for help. Dr Rob and the office peeps were very warm and friendly, putting me at ease right away. As I expected, he gave me a steroid shot in the bottom of my heel.....needless to, not my favorite but I didn't kick him so all in all, a successful treatment! It certainly feels better- not perfect but Dr warned me that since I had suffered with this so long I had done a lot of damage. We will see what the future holds, but I am very glad to be getting some help! What can I say about Doc Deric and his son Doc Bob! I consider myself a reasonably articulate individual, but here the words escape me! Doc Deric performed a serious operation on me some months ago, and while I regret it having had to be done, it may have saved my pathetic life! Doctor Deric did constant followups to check on my recovery progress. He would spend an average of 25 minutes with me! What other doc would do that! -I know of none! When we first walked into the clinic, the receptionist did not even greet us or say a simple "hello". My husband filled out the paperwork which they sent us via email to print at our home with our ink. He signed in and we waited for about 20 minutes. He finally got frustrated and approached the receptionist. He explained that he was a new patient and wanted to know what to do. She acted stupid and said "Oh!! I didn't know you were new. Let me take your paperwork and I'll let the doctor know you're here." SHEESSHH!! 20 freaking minutes!!! So, my husband had 4 ingrown toe nails that needed to be taken care of. Thank goodness we got the son, Dr. Robert!! Right after the anesthesia injections (which were extremely painful as I can see from the expressions on his face), the father walks in and tells his son, Dr. Robert, MIND YOU this is in front of us, that Dr. Robert should NOT have done all 4 toe nails at the same time because they won't get paid from our insurance!! The dad proceeded to explain to us that he needs to teach his son how to make money. How degrading!! Talk about NO CLASS!!! How dare the dad talk about how much money he can make off each little piggy toe instead of making the patient feel comfortable about the procedure???!!??? What the heck?? So now, we felt bad for Dr. Robert. Can you imagine how embarrassing that is in front of your patient and a 4th year med student that Dr. Robert was training??!!?? However, Dr. Robert assured us that "sometimes, it's not about making the money but minimizing the patient's pain" and that he's "heard this lecture from his dad before and it's not the first time". Thank goodness we got Dr. Robert!! I would have rated them 1 star but because Dr. Robert was kind enough to think about his patient MORE than the LOVE OF MONEY, I am giving the practice 3 stars. The dad needs to retire since all he cares about is making the money and not caring about the patient at all!! ASK FOR DR. ROBERT LORD! DON'T GO TO THE DAD!! Dr. Lords has treated a wart on my foot bottom on two prior occasions. The simple swab freeze treatment takes less than one minute. Nevertheless, I've been most grateful for the relief. However, the procedure was to last 'indefinitely', but I found myself needing to be treated, once again, within four months. I started questioning Dr. Lords' billing practices, as my last visit involved my $30. co-pay and an additional $40. that I needed to paid for an insurance 'shortfall'. My understanding was that Blue Cross only paid Dr. Lords $113. of his $208. insurance invoice. The poor guy had to 'write off' $95. of the $278. one minute procedure. (I'm sure a tax benefit for bilking an insurance company). I was told I could get treated, this time, as a patient without insurance, for $55! I will not argue that medical practices are businesses with costs that need to be covered. However. It did occur to me that possibly practitioners, like Dr. Lords, are as guilty as the attorneys that propagate our new cost prohibitive insurance costs. read more

My appointment was at 8:30am and I was there early to fill out paperwork. I finished within 10 minutes and I ended up sitting around until 8:35am. I was hoping to get in early but I guessed wrong. They finally called me back and I ended up sitting around for another 27minutes. The nurse finally came in and asked me questions. I then noticed her pulling toenail clippers out of a metal tin that had some liquid substance because she was drying the clippers and there was a lot of condensation on the inside of the tin...scary. Why doesn't this professional place that has rave reviews have their stuff packaged and sterile? Or use a clay? I sat there waiting once again imagining all the floating skin and bacteria in that metal tin...I didn't want the Dr to use any toenail clipper on me that day. They went above and beyond to make sure i was comfortable and even went out of they're way to make sure it was just a corn which it was not. BEST Money I've ever spent! After trying to use my HMO insurance, I decided to see Dr. Lords as a "Cash" patient. The cost was slightly more than if I had used my insurance however, I got an appointment the day after I called! The doctor was great, diagnosed my problem, and gave me the solutions I needed that worked to relieve my pain.
