Hello Mirchi Peri Peri! I have never heard of a Portuguese restaurant with South African twists! I can also appreciate that they are 100% Halal and Always Fresh!
We were prepared via email to sample:
Bone-in chicken, chicken wings, beef Bihari burgers, lollipop chicken, peri rice, corn, fries, coleslaw, alfredo mac and cheese, and more, alongside water and strawberry lychee green tea lemonade.
Well... We never had the "and more", the beef Bihari burgers, lollipop chicken, fries, coleslaw, or the Alfredo mac and cheese. I also saw many pictures of flan. I guess that was served in the second session. I don't necessarily take that as a loss because I never met a flan that I liked anyway. But let me tell you when I read about the burgers, the lollipop chicken, and especially the Alfredo mac and cheese?? My palette was more than ready. I did not eat all day preparing for this feast!
Sal, the Owner, and Jando spoke briefly just for some background, and I loved that. Sal was super complimentary, humble, and passionate. You could see that all through his service and checking on everyone. He came to our table several times to see how we were doing, what we liked, how things were going, and to share a couple of jokes. He was so wonderful.
Upon entering, he even secretly told me where to sit even though I had to move seats eventually (cough cough), but it was understood why. Lol.
We were told that the service might be slow but they wanted to bust things out quickly...and THAT they did. They kept on bringing dish after dish and we had whiplash from all the plates we had to photograph! It was awesome! I think this is the fastest service I've ever had in Yelp history. Sal and his staff were intentional in service and ensured everyone had everything to sample.
Everything we tasted:
**Peri Peri Rice: Rice with aromatic spices. (Vegetarian). The rice seemed quite plain, almost acting as a canvas for the more flavorful proteins and sauces.
**Peri Creamed Corn: Corn kernels with Peri mayonnaise sauce, topped with our special peri peri seasoning. It had more of a buttery flavor, and the seasoning did not seem very potent.
**Loaded Quesadilla Wrap: Chicken quesadilla wrap with all our veggies. Lettuce, tomatoes, onions, olives, pickles, and jalapenos. My favorite! So so delicious. They were dense, cheesy, and hot. After every dish was served, I snuck and asked Sal for another quesadilla, and he smiled and delivered. I grabbed two more pieces! Lol, I loved it. I did suffer from bloating, etc. but it was worth it.
**Flame Grilled Wings: Flame-grilled wings are grilled on high heat, and once they're done cooking, they're fried. The wings were delightful, especially when paired with the Peri-Peri hot sauce. While the garlic sauce was okay, I found the hot sauce to be much more enjoyable. Sal said that was the original recipe for the Peri-Peri hot sauce from Africa. He also noted that the garlic sauce (yellow one), was a unique blend that he created and took a couple of months to perfect.
**Whole Chickens: Flame-grilled whole chickens with spices. The whole chickens were a pleasant surprise. The meat was tender and juicy, and it tasted even better DRENCHED in the Peri-Peri sauce. Also, the charring was a beautiful surprise. I love a charred protein!
I'm still very much sad about the mac and cheese, the burger, and the other items I was looking forward. So... that means I will have to come here and patronize Sal's restaurant again!
In the end, I was able to ask Vera for some moves for our very unplanned black-and-white crew. Lol. Vera was our entertainment for the evening; a belly dancer with over 15 years of experience, I believe. When she started clinking, I knew we were in for an experience. She came over and chime-chime-chimed in my ear and I felt like the cartoons where they get dizzy. Lol. She is a showman and did a great job. Vera said that she was taking a quick "commercial break" and never got back up again. LMBO. I asked Vera if she was getting up, and she said yes, and kept on eating her food. We started laughing at each other and moved on.
Sal's staff was super! (They DID overlook our table several times initially, but they were always very apologetic about it.) They always made sure that we had what to eat and what to drink and were never lacking anything. I thought that was amazing. I always say how you train your staff is the level of business owner you are and the level of human you are. It was a super excellent customer experience.
I'm so blessed and privileged to have been here. Thank you so much, Jandooooo and the Yelp Houston team, for taking the time to research and court Sal and Mirchi Peri Peri. It was a pretty awesome experience. read more
