Those reviewers who left negative comments for Hanto are the type who have eaten Americanized Chinese food their whole lives and have no clue what real Chinese cuisine is. I would bet most Americans ordering there do not even know how to properly order authentic Hunan dishes. Hanto is actually well-known among Chinese international students for its incredibly authentic Hunan food. When you get the menu, those who do not know any better just order from the Americanized Chinese section at the front. But those in the know flip to the last few pages for the real Hunan menu. The Hunan dishes here do not have that dull, artificial spiciness you find at American fast-food joints--it is that fresh, savory kind of spicy (the clams with chicken, for example, is incredibly fresh and spicy). The owner even offers a pig head meat dish that is first marinated in spices and then stir-fried--something truly rare and hard to come by in the U.S. The owner himself is super nice! We had such a great chat that he spontaneously gave us a complimentary plate of the pig head meat (we enjoyed it so much we forgot to take a photo). What looks like a tiny shopping center restaurant is actually a megaplex when you get inside. They've combined two storefronts into one, to include a dining room and a few different bar areas. Gigantic TV larger than a garage door. They do Japanese (which we skipped). They do old school Chinese (which we hit with the apps). And they do authentic Chinese (which we hit for the entrees). Boneless Spareribs: The only downside: they were on the thin side. But they more than made up for it with wilting tenderness, a silky-juicy mouth feel, char, and plenty of sticky glaze that didn't taste like it just came out of a jar. This was more complex, with possibly hoisin mixed in and/or a marinade of some kind underneath. Among the best around. Elite. Wings: Plump, crisp, and juicy are no way to go through life, son. Unless you're a chicken wing. Good flavor here too, with five spice lingering and natural chicken flavor singing loudest. Well above average to near-elite. They also do a garlic sauce version, which I'd like to try. Chicken Egg Rolls: Noticeably lengthy fry time for extra crispness; not sure if it's by design, but I liked it. Inside, a novel egg roll experience, with a moist mix that felt and tasted like a chicken stir fry. Like a few other egg rolls I've had recently, I wouldn't want to have this every time, but a unique item that's worth a try and worth returning for. Above average. Mixed Mushroom Fish Filets: Delicate fish with black fungus and other mushrooms for textural contrast, soaking in a light brown bath thinner than a sauce but thicker than a broth. Plenty of flavor, with a little sweetness but mostly savory and a bit of heat. Great with rice. No "grade" since I have no comparisons, but this dish was fantastic and even better as leftovers the next day. Cumin Fried Beef: Somewhat crisp exterior and thick pieces, though not as tender as could be. Lots going on with the flavor, with a flurry of peppercorns, whole cumin seeds, and at least one other kind of seed on the surface. Some celery stalks, and plenty of heat underneath. This is a barometer dish of mine, so I try it often. I liked this one, but can think of a few others that impress me more, so gotta say average. Still good. Twice Cooked Pork: Another barometer dish, this one boasted ribbons of thin cooked belly with a firm exterior and bendability. Mildly spicy, somewhat salty, and somewhat sweet, with some fermented beans and even some thin potato slices. Enjoyable for sure, but a bit below average. Solid meal. No duds, and a couple at elite or close. The old school fare compared more favorably against its counterparts than the authentic did against theirs (still enjoyed though), but nice to see a place that does well at both. read more

. I had been seeking an opportunity to visit a friend in Ashland, and this discovery turned out to be a wonderful bonus. The lunch special, featuring Garlic Beef with lo mein, was exceptional. I was also drawn to trying the boneless ribs appetizer. Although I forgot that the lunch special included soup and didnt try the soup but appears 6 soup options. The boneless ribs were outstanding, boasting a generous portion size, tender texture, and flavorful taste, although they were slightly cold. The garlic beef was cooked to perfection, with a rich garlic flavor and generous serving size. The accompanying lo mein was a superior choice to fried rice, and the chicken wing as part of the special was remarkably moist. Prices were very reasonable, considering the generous portion sizes. This establishment is an excellent spot . The bar area was cozy, with TVs and a warm atmosphere, perfect for a stormy day. The venue also features four dartboards, three separate rooms, and a modern jukebox or karaoke setup, making it an ideal location for a family to spend the day. With its extensive menu offering Chinese, Japanese, and sushi options, Hanto is definitely a place I will return to again for sure. read more

They have both generic americanized chinese food, which they call it "western dishes" as well as authentic chinese food. Quality is way better than other generic places and prices are slighly higher but my favorite go-to in the area. They have a full bar and a live band on fridays too. I waitressed for a Chinese family for seven years in my youth. I ate their traditional food four days a week. Hanto is the BEST Chinese food in the area hands down. The General Gaos chicken was cold and so hard I couldn't pick it up with a fork. It was inedible. I wasn't going to call but decided to on Sunday (today)just to let them know. I didn't care if they replaced the food or not, which I told them as well. But they said they would so I said ok, but I'm home sick in my PJs would you bring it out to me they said sure just call. When I called a woman came out and said why can't you come in? I again explained I'm sick in my PJs and I wasn't planning on leaving the house but you offered. She replied, so what your legs don't work and was giving me such glare and pushed the food at me. Walked away and kept glaring back at me as if she wanted to throw down and fight. It was quit aggressive. While they made things right by remaking the order even though it was not necessary the woman's behavior was completely unprofessional and disgusting. The food I will never know if it was better or not as I didn't trust it to eat it with her behavior. I work in healthcare and part time in the service industry myself and the way she behaved was out of line. I will never return to this place again. So. Very. Gross. Went there this evening to catch the only live music in the area. We are in our fifties and brought the average age down by a few years by walking in. The band sucked but that's not the restaurant's fault. Ordered a couple mai tais that were instant heartburn and included mushy maraschino cherries and orange slices that were cut a week ago. We were starving but not hopeful about the food so went with Chinese food staples. How can you f up crab rangoons and Peking ravioli? Well, they found a way. The crab rangoons were oozing grease and were stuck together like they must have been frozen solid and dumped into the fryer en masse. The ravioli were coincidentally also all stuck together but with a thin layer of fried, charcoal-like skin(?) layered over them. We didn't even attempt to separate them and instead sent them back with a request to have them removed from the bill. The bartender was a pleasant person who explained that she was told by the restaurant that was how they are cooked there. We felt bad for her because she obviously also thought it was super weird. From the layout to the epically sticky surfaces everywhere to the swampy gross restrooms, it's simply awful. , The kitchen at this place stays open late so if you're nearly blackout drunk and need that greasy good hangover helper, take your chances. I came here from my husband's high school reunion. The place is big and spacious good to accommodate large groups and and events. The food was surprisingly decent for sushi and they have a pretty good poo poo platter. the bar is big and sociable and they had a really nice vintage band with good music. Except when I ordered a cabernet they had filthy glasses with lipstick stains all over it and the bartender had to change the glass three times... I had one drink and water afterwards. read more

The wonton soup at Hanto in Ashland was a favorite of mine for years. At some point in the past few months it has gone downhill. The broth used to be rich, flavorful and a golden color. Now the the broth is like dishwater-pale and flavorless. I don't know how it's being made now, but I can only assume that it's no longer being made with actual chicken meat/bones. The wontons are still good, but without the flavorful, rich broth the soup is very sub par and I am so disappointed. We also had pork lo mein from there last week and it was a pile of greasy slop. Dear Hanto, You used to be real good but our last visit has occurred and from the looks of the place where we were the sole guests on a Saturday evening at 6pm...we aren't the only ones who have come to this determination. The last straw was chicken teriyaki served in a cold sizzling plate (didn't even sizzle or pop once). It had a texture like a rubber ball... like it was par cooked 4 days ago and reheated upon our order. It wasn't even close to edible... the girlfriend spit out the first bite. It was grey inside. Old. Gross. We called the server and explained and she instantly wanted to bring a new one...like she has heard of this issue before. The next one was better, fresh, white, flaky, sizzly. But to knowingly serve something they half assed and to charge $14 for it-bad. I moved to Framingham from Quincy earlier this year and of course, I was missing the abundance of Asian restaurants and grocery stores. I ordered a few lunch entrees from Hanto one afternoon and they were all very flavorful with great portions. I appreciate that the stir fried beef and peppers were not too salty, the chicken was tender and not over cooked. It can be hard to find affordable Asian food in the area and I am so glad I found this place. I recommend their lunch specials! read more

We've struggled with Hanto lately. The food quality has suffered since COVID, the pick up order us usually running late, and the staff is always hurried. First order: Great quality food. I was a little disappointed in the shrimp to veggie ratio in my "shrimp and vegetables lunch combo" lots of veggies , only 4 shrimp! I assume the dinner portions are larger. I've also gotten the pu pu platter from here. Chicken wings and teriyaki steak are A+ and portion size was as expected. 2nd Order: Shrimp with Lobster Sauce. I keep going back because it's probably better then the other hole in the wall msg laden greasy "Chinese" Resturant's, but I really don't think the management cares one but about customer Satisfaction. For example, my to go order of hot and sour soup with added wontons had non. The general Tao chicken was all clumped into a few pieces in the fryer and came out with some raw parts, so bad I had to toss it. The fried rice was bland and so little stuff (pork, egg, onion) in it it was a joke. On top of that the order was way late, and the cashier who must be ownership was anything but friendly. This is a recurring theme at this place. They haven't a clue about hello and thanks for coming.
