This place has been known for decades for its amazing both classic New York style and German potato salad. The second owners (Oriental) maintained the recipes and the old style deli decor. People used to travel here just for the potato salad. The recently new owners did a renovation dramatically loosing the deli vibe. The huge trays of freshly prepared deli salads are now gone. Just small containers of regular potato, egg, and maybe one other salad are displayed. It's a shell of what it used to be. Just the name remains. As far as the potato salad... After the takeover it was ok. Inconsistent, but ok. Sadly the quality has deminished. Looks like I'll be traveling for potato salad now. read more

I was in the area and had never tried Hanstedt, And was in the mood for a egg & bacon sandwich. Unfortunately i got there ea little too late and they already had stopped serving breakfast. No matter I had a roast beef on a roll with lettuce tomato & mustard. They use all Boars Head meats as most deli's these days do. The sandwich was good and the service was also fast and friendly. The store is on the very small size and has zero seating inside. There is two small tables outside, But really it was 95 degrees out not sure I really want to sit outside?????. I thought the pricing was a bit high in comparison to other local deli's. Also I did not see any sort of specials board which almost all other deli's have. Overall the food was good and give them 4 stars for food, But pricing and no specials drops it down to a 2-3. read more

I surprised to walk in and see. I one there that look like a Hans. I was a little apprehensive but ordered heros for my son and I. I'm glad I did. They were perfect. The hero bread, chicken cutlets and fresh toppings. Priced right too. I have a new go to deli. Very happy with this establishment. read more

Seriously, I'm now convinced the oatmeal raisin cookies here are the best thing I've ever eaten. OK, maybe not the best, but def top 10. Look at my pic. Somehow they've perfected the art of barely cooking a cookie and still making it taste delicious. Well after a near Super Bowl sized meltdown when my previous caterer cancelled on me, I was left a few days before the big game with no food. On a whim, I called this little local deli and they saved the day! We had a 6 foot hero, half Italian, half vegetarian and it was a huge hit. Even the non vegetarians were saying how yummy the balsamic roasted vegetables were. Included was a massive amount of Cole slaw, Mac salad, and potato salad. They also provide pickles, olives, roasted peppers, mayo, mustard, Italian and balsamic dressings. Everything was wrapped up in a lovely basket and on a football tray. I'm such a dope, because we opened everything before I could get a Yelp worthy picture, but I assure you it was really well presented. I'm glad my guests were happy and the food was awesome AND they could accommodate me in a pinch. Oh and they were way cheaper than other places. So happy with everything, this will be my new go to for catering :) read more

Soft and chewy not necessarily buttery and crispy... more like an Entenmans soft cookie.. not like a Tates.. etc. So while not gourmet etc.. they do have an addictive flavor. The rumor is that this mainstay deli was sold. That would explain the recent disappearance of all who used to be the regular staff and the high turnover of the new faces I've seen over the last few months. Virginia, one of the former owners, remains, likely on some sort of consulting or transitional basis. Others reported quality and quantity have suffered, but I have not seen that with the breakfast sandwiches or prepared salads that I order. The prices have not gone up (yet) but service has suffered terribly. I'm not one to hang around and BS with the staff, but the familiar faces that made this the friendly deli around the corner are gone. Overpriced mediocre deli! Every time the lettuce is wet and not dried properly - makes the sandwhich soggy as well as the salads! Usually get delivery and they always forget something! Ordered soggy salads and no dressing and they didn't even ask what kind of dressing! get it together! Cold cuts taste old and not fresh. Also if you would like to make your own sandwhich forget about it bc its an up charge if your not getting one of their sandwiches off the menu. It pains me to write this review because I have been coming to this deli for years now. For about the past year and a half I have been coming here at least twice a week for coffee. I used to order their food all the time and while their egg sandwiches are delicious, I find their chicken salad overpriced and their sandwiches sub-par. A couple of weeks ago I got an iced coffee as usual. After finishing the coffee I dumped the rest out to use the cup for water and what came floating out? A COCKROACH! Now keep in mind I do not put sugar in my coffee so it is not possible that it was just scooped in from the sugar in, the cockroach must have been INSIDE the iced coffee vat. Now, I did not want to write such a public review as I love Hanstead and always try to service smaller coffee shops so I called and asked to speak to the manager. This was on a Friday and they informed me no manager would be in until Tuesday. While debating if I wanted to tell the worker of my issue. I said "ok umm" and the worker repeated back into the phone "ugh umm uhhhh what" I simply replied, "wow that was rude, goodbye". What kind of wackadoodle wakes up in the morning and has her very first thoughts directed towards a tuna sandwich on Lithuanian bread? Well, if that sandwich is coming from Hanstedt, then that wackadoodle would be me. My father introduced me to this deli years and years ago, digging deep into his Austrian roots by calling this place by it's 'real name' (his pronunciation: Hahn-shtett) and the joys of Breads Other Than White, Wheat or Rye. Even with a more traditional choice, however, it is what lies between those slices of bread that makes this reviewer crave and crave away: the 'secret recipe' tuna salad. I could probably guess some of the ingredients but it would be all for naught. Why bother messing with perfection? And if you are not a tuna fan and cannot be converted, lucky for you, you have a pretty excellent deli to back it up. It's easy to miss Hanstedt. It's on one side of a small strip mall on a main street across from suburban residences. You drive a few more blocks and you're surrounded by four corners of large shopping centers. You go a few blocks the other way and you are heading on the highway. Unless you know to go, you may not, so this is my gentle way of telling you to GO NOW. I love their food. My coworkers love the food. We love it so much we convinced the finance dept to open an account. Do we order daily? Oh yes. The best BAKED mac and cheese. Full of flavor and amazingness with every bite. The best tomatoe tortelleni soup- I only wish they had a bigger option and an endless supply of tortelleni The best Cheddar Corn CHOWDER soup- simply a friday kind of soup, amazing, full of bacon, cheddar bits, flavor just everything A pepper jack ranch chicken salad that just makes the perfect sense! who wouldve thought! A few years back, Hanstedt Deli was closed after a fire in the shopping center severely damaged its interior. During that time, I sulked around Syosset and Plainview looking for an alternative that could bring me the joy that Hanstedt had brought me all of my childhood. Growing up, Hanstedt had served as a true family oriented delicatessen serving fresh coffee and breakfast specialities in the morning and delicious sandwiches throughout the afternoon. Fortunately for the neighboring community, Hanstedt recovered from it's fire and has come back even stronger with a new, clean interior. I love this place and it's menu. Each day their macaroni, potato, fruit salads and rice puddings are made fresh. The speciality sandwiches are all great and very reasonably priced. I also enjoy their panini sandwiches, particularly the Smoke House and the Tucson Chicken. Hanstedt has been under the same management for over twenty years, and their staff has always been friendly often chatting with the regulars that frequently come in. Try Handstedt! Good deli's are hard to find these days but this one is on top of my list. My dad lives in Bethpage and one of his doctor's is in Plainview so we were looking for a place to pick up lunch and someone in the office recommended this place. My dad had a Rueben which he loved, it's the first time I've seen a Rueben sandwich with corned beef and pastrami it was a great combination. I had the Hanstedt Supreme and thought the chicken cutlet was cooked to perfection, golden brown and moist, and I loved the balsamic vinigarette. Now all they need is to make a German butter cake which is impossible to find. I will definitely be back. read more

The egg bacon and cheese sandwich here gives me life. Turns any day into a good day by getting one of these in the morning. I get mine with sunny side eggs on them. It gets messy obviously but it's worth it. And they know exactly how to handle making it. Also, they will make your coffee or you can do it yourself and the coffee station. Not to mention he and his employee were extremely nice and made me feel very happy just from the interaction with these genuine people. Most importantly, the sandwich itself was BOMB! This place used to be one of my favorite delis, that is until they switched owners. The price has gone up and the quality has gone down. My most recent experience is what really led me to write this review: I purchased a bacon, egg, and cheese on a roll and an iced coffee with hazelnut creamer, paying roughly $9.50 (whereas other delis would normally be around $5). After getting into my car, the egg sandwich began to smell like rotten eggs. I take a sip from my iced coffee and to my surprise it was basically creamer with a shot of coffee in it, almost undrinkable. After getting into my office, I tried this sandwich. Absolutely putrid! The eggs were rotten, the bacon was over cooked fat, and the cheese was like Kraft singles that you buy for $1 that taste like rubber. After 1 bite, I had enough. NEVER going back even for a bottle of soda. The new owners really need to re-evaluate what they're doing in there! read more

I work right by here so I always come in for food. The staff is great and the food has always been good. They recently changed owners though and I have heard from many people they are not satisfied. I ordered a sandwich the other day and the meat was definitely less than what it was, for a higher price. This is the first and last time I will ever go in here. The disorganization was unacceptable Took over 20 minutes to get our food, and it wasn't even that busy. By the time we got there, anyone that was waiting already had their orders in and got their food relatively quickly. There is no reason that a NY deli should take 20 minutes in the morning to prepare a basic egg sandwich and omelette. Keep in mind it looked like the entire staff was on deck, so I still don't understand the wait. I have been to delis in Manhattan during the morning rush who have given me faster service with less staff. While we were waiting, the person who took our order took our credit card, but never completed the transaction. Another staff member found the card, and they had to find the transaction in the register to re-swipe the card. They were looking at the wrong register for the transaction, and despite us pointing that out twice, the person who took our order was adamant that we were wrong. This whole ordeal wasted even more time and made us late to work. Outside of that experience leaving a sour taste in our mouths, the food was okay. Nothing spectacular, I could get better food and better service somewhere else. I have never reviewed a deli before, it is a shame I have to write up a review about something that should not be so complicated. read more

We used to order from this deli all the time at my office how ever as of recently the food has not been good. Besides being extremely overpriced the food was not fresh at all and we are always missing things from our orders or they were completely wrong, which is a big deal to an office of people with food allergies. A very sad ending to the once upon time friendly and courteous deli. Just came out of the deli and had a verbal altercation with one of the Latino employees over a fresh chicken ceasar salad. The reason: I asked for a fresh salad - not one that has been sitting on the shelf for the past seven hours. We're talking about romaine lettuce and grilled chicken and grated cheese! Not a big deal. Two items and cheese sprinkle!! You think I asked for the whole community to be fed this salad! Apparently the deli has been sold and these are new owners!! Today at work, a group of us order food to celebrate an event, excited about hearing the good reviews from this place from co-workers , I order a grilled chicken wrap and small fries. Upon arrival, the small fries were missing and grilled wrap was suppose to be a whole wheat wrap. Very unhappy no fries came as when the call was made , a small fries was confirmed but when coworker picked up the food, they advised her that the fryer was turned off. Which was not a smart move as fries were something I really wanted. Also one of my coworkers food had too much pepper on the sandwich and she did not eat it . 2 unhappy campers here.
