There were a few negatives on our visit, but the positives and the super evening we had here more than made up for them. It's right in downtown and so close to historic districts and Playhouse Square. The exterior looks like a place in Germany, both modern parts and historic house facade near the entrance. Inside is divided into distinct parts as well, with the main large hall having the stage, long group tables, small semi-private tables, and the bar area at the back easy to find with huge barrels. To the right of the entrance and restrooms are smaller rooms with low ceilings for events or quieter dinners. At the back is another small bar, plus outdoor seating areas off different sides. This is a German restaurant, and their menu leans into heavy meats, potatoes, pretzels, etc. The beer selection is traditional German styles as well: dunkels, helles, festbier, etc. They're also lower on the alcohol and heavier on the flavor so expect to get full here. Prices are reasonable for the large sizes, should you desire. Initially we had clearly frustrated staff serving our group and the shared bars, but once this was all adjusted, they all ended up being friendly and quick to serve. On our evening, there was a wedding party, which brought their own local band so the German umpah music was switched for rock standards and modern songs. This ended up being the highlight, as people were dancing on tables, and the close proximity of the stage made it feel like a private party for the few dozen of us left at the end of the evening. If you're a fan of German food, music, and beer, this is a fun substitute for flying to Europe.

Appetizers were OK. Fried pickles, sauerkraut, balls, and pretzels with beer cheese. Sauerkraut balls could've been fried a little more as they were a bit on the pale side. Meals were decent. My wife had chicken paprikash and spaetzle. She said it was OK. I had sauerbraten with spaetzleand red cabbage. The sauerbraten was good, but there was very little sauce with it, which was disappointing. All in all a decent experience and it could be a nice social event, but I wouldn't necessarily run back.

From looking at the menu, walking into to pick it up, eating it at home, this place did not disappoint. Let me start with the menu, everything looked and sounded amazing. Ordered some traditional pork schnitzel, a kase schnitzel and a wurst plate. Next, when I pulled up, pretty unassuming but loved the look of their enclosed patio. Once I walked in though, the ambiance, decor, smells...wow!!! Looking forward to eating in at some point and enjoying the gorgeous patio room! Now let's get to the good part, my drive home was filled with absolute mouth watering smells, my family was amazed I made it home without stopping and doing some taste testing. Everything was spectacular. I do need to specifically point out the kase schnitzel was the greatest meal by far, the creaminess, light hint of lemon... cooked to perfection. If this app would let me give more than 5 stars I'd just keep hitting them until another schnitzel showed up in front of me. Great restaurant. (The waitress who helped us when we got there also deserves 5 stars, super helpful, friendly and definitely had a great vibe)

We almost didn't come here bc it felt like too much of a schlep from where we were staying downtown…read morebut it was definitely worth the trek. It's really not that far I'm being dramatic it's like max 13 min from the center by car. Anyways it is literally the cutest place inside. Dimly lit by table-side antique sconces and Christmas lights in the bar with wooden booths and chairs. Very eclectic. This felt like a special place the minute we set foot inside. The beer menu is something else you not only wouldn't find in a typical restaurant but even for a beer place. Very Belgian German vibes. I didn't even get to the best part yet believe it or not. They are very vegan and vegetarian friendly. So many things on their menu can be made vegetarian or vegan. Like things I've never seen before like TOFU SCHNITZEL. Holy shit. But then you think about it and are like why have I never seen this before? It can't be that hard? They also have a meat free version of the allegedly local favorite sauerkraut balls which was an absolute must. There were just so many things we wanted it was hard to choose. Other than the balls, I was very interested in the vegan sausage and the Reuben (on literal potato pancakes) that can be made vegetarian or vegan without the corned beef but ultimately could not pass on the tofu schnitzel which came with a starchy side (I went with the spätzle obviously) and a veggie side (I went with the kraut.. obviously) and GF the Reuben with a side of fries. To take home for later, the spätzle appetizer and the pretzel. We also ordered beers, needless to say. I tried a cider that was incredible. One of the best ciders I've ever had. Everything was incredible. The kraut balls, actually spicy kraut balls per their menu, were so good. I was bummed there were only 4. I feel like there should be at least 6. I'll pay more. The dipping sauces were really good too. One was a curry ketchup type thing and the other was a cheese that was fabulous. Tofu schnitzel was breaded to perfection with a very crispy exterior. They used a nice, thic slab of tofu. Given the schnitzelness of it they probably could have gotten away with something thinner. They had a mushroom gravy which was nice for the vegans. The kraut was typical kraut. The spätzle slapped. I love those little pasta dumpling dough pieces. What a nice texture. GF's fries were salted perfectly and crisp. The pretzel was softer and lighter than usual. The cheese spätzle was better than sex, earth shattering ecstasy. So yeah it was pretty good.

Real old-school bar vibe. Really liked it. Lots of wood paneling and vintage stuff on the wall. Great German beer selection and I had a draft I never had before. Really good. Ordered 'build your own Schnitzel'. Picked the veal, sauerkraut and mashed potatoes. Had the veal topped with 'Oscar', crabmeat and asparagus. Delicious...veal was crispy and tender, sauerkraut had the right amount of bite and mashed potatoes were solid enough. Topped with paprika gravy. Food was very good. All in all a really good place. Food was great, service was fine, maybe a little cold and not particularly friendly, but good enough. I am new to neighborhood but this is the kind of place I could see myself coming to often.

We enjoyed the various music and all had a good time, but one thing spoiled the fun. As a group who enjoys "good" beer, we always make a point of ordering whatever the German beer is on tap. Well holy leader-hosen, this year the Pitchers were $25.00 bucks. We were together until closing and Saturday was hot, so we probably went through 6 or 7 pitchers. At various times throughout our visit we would heard comments about the beer being over-priced. We heard even more comments about beer prices when standing in line. I must say no one DIS-agreed. While the food has to be prepared, set out, and served, beer just needs to be poured. No one minds paying more for a beer when they go out and we expect it, but we just felt $25 for a pitcher of beer was a bit of a ripoff. The domestic beer (LaBatts Light, really ?), wasn't much cheaper at $22 bucks a pitcher. Sorry, but our group agreed we probably won't be back next year.

The space itself is cozy and thoughtfully designed with elegant decor, and it has a really nice taphouse/tasting room feel. The rotating craft beer selection is a big plus if you're into trying something new. For food, we started with Branka's pretzel with everything seasoning, brown mustard, and their house-made beer cheese. It was delicious and a perfect shareable appetizer. My husband ordered the Reuben sandwich per the recommendation of our server. It came on rye bread with Swiss cheese, house-made corned beef, kraut, 1000 Island dressing, plus chips and a pickle on the side. He really enjoyed it. We also shared the charcuterie platter, which came hummus, jam, mustard, smoked sausage, vegetables, chips, mozzarella cheese and sliced apples. It was a nice variety that worked well for grazing. I thought it was a little pricey for what you got though. My husband did a beer flight, which he enjoyed sampling, and our 11-year-old was happy with a mocktail that was not on the menu, but our server made for him by request, which made it a nice stop for the whole family. Well, years ago a good friend of mine, who was born and raised in Germany, took me to a great German grocery store off west 25th and Lorain on the west side of Cleveland. I never forgot that store. But since he's been gone I really had no reason to revisit it. The other day someone told me the owner of that store opened a restaurant attached to it. And that was when I first heard about "Hansa Brewery". I couldn't wait to go there and tonight was the night! We arrived this evening and were greeted by a very pleasant gentleman who quickly seated us in the all glassed in dining room. The view out one side is onto Lorain Ave. Out another side looks out upon St. Ignatius High School. Out another side looks into the brewery itself, filled with giant stainless steel equipment. The menu is brought to your table written on a large chalkboard... one for the whole table. It has a marvelous selection of German specialties... everything you could possibly want. I ordered the lamb chops (very nicely priced). They came out, much to my surprise, all as double cut chops. So I didn't just get 4 lamb chops. I actually got 8. And wow! they were beautiful, meaty, perfectly seasoned, and cooked exactly as I requested. The red cabbage and green beans were excellent as well. It was a wonderful meal. My wife ordered the Weiner schnitzel with spätzle... absolutely fabulous... perfect. Our guests ordered Weiner schnitzel and Chicken paprikash and they were thrilled with the quality of their meals also. We all followed up with coffee and homemade strudel that was to die for. What a great evening. I can't wait to finish my doggy bag for lunch tomorrow. If you like German food. Or you think you might like German food. Do yourself a favor. Go to Hansa Brewery.
