The majority of the time my child was at Kils, the classes just ran around in circles, or spent…read moretime kicking the bags with little or no instruction as far as form. So my child would stand and kick a bag incorrectly. The children were supposed to be getting instruction on how to perform the forms at each level of belt rank. This was only done perhaps 5 minutes out of each class. Many times my child didn't receive forms instruction for several class periods. Children are moved up the belt ranks quickly even if they are not prepared because there's money in it for Kils as they charge to move you up a rank. Master Kil himself will call you and your child into a separate room where he'll ask your child "You want a trophy right?" and shame you into participating in tournaments. Again, they make a lot of money off the tournaments. I think this place used to be better. I think it used to focus on having the students learn the routines, but not anymore. Id look elsewhere.

I still continue practicing TKD in Maryland. Thus, I have had a chance to compare schools and masters and their training curriculum and practices across Michigan and Maryland. Master Chung ranks among the top for many reasons: 1) He is passionate about the art, and attempts to imbibe the same in the student. 2) He teaches, not only the techniques of TKD, but also the philosophy of TKD in a manner that allows one to grow personally in other walks of life as well. THIS IS A FEATURE THAT NOT MANY MASTERS MAY OFFER! 3) The TKD curriculum involves intense warm-ups, stretching exercises, forms, kicks/ punches/blocks, sparring, and self-defense techniques. What's special is that each of these elements differ each day, thereby making it all the more fun and exciting. That variety helps the student in an overall development of fitness and mindset. 4) Students are allowed to test only when they reach the required level for graduation, which may vary from individual to individual. Many schools make students test just for making $$ off the testing fees. That's not the case here. 5) Master Chung runs the show HIMSELF every day, every class. Many other schools rely on their black-belt instructors to run the class. 6) Master Chung displays the right balance of strictness and leniency during the class, which is fine tuned to each student, depending on his/her ability. Not only can you learn taekwondo here, but you can also just come to the Kickfit class to get a group exercise in, as well as zumba. There are classes several times a day for different groups, it is extremely family friendly, and flexible. The head coach of the Competition Team is also a coach for Peak Performance, and some of the students at Kick's also got brought onto the amazing Peak team. The Rose family is so amazing and encouraging. The other people training at Kick's are welcoming too, it feels like a big family.
