Update on Hannara Resturant today I took my sister and brother in law all the way down to the Westside . Located actually in Waianae just before you hit Tamura's super market on the right side . Service always friendly last couple times I've been there the waitress always ask where you guys from . So you know they always have the regular customers because they don't recognize us lol . I normally I order their Hamburger steak homemade patty with onion and brown gravy and of course Mac salad . Today I decided to go with their chop steak with noodles . It was ok but on the sweet side I like my chop steak just black pepper and little shoyu . My brother in law had their Hawaiian plate that's Kanak attack need a nap after that . A friend recommended the hamburger steak plate but it was too hot and too heavy of a meal for lunch so settled for the clubhouse sandwich and Mac salad. This old school eatery is one of the last good places still standing. The hamburger steak is soft like meatloaf with a grill charred crust. Excellent! Top 3 hamburger steak on the island for sure. The meat Jun here is also top 3 on the island. Tender meat and soft eggy batter. Very tasty with the side veggies given. I also tried the pork cutlet here and I was not disappointed. Two huge pieces of pork cutlet with rice and Mac salad. They also give lunches if you ask. It's a far drive out west if you don't live near, but so worth it! Simple, satisfying, affordable diner food! The breakfast joints in Kapolei are all easily $20-$30 per plate for breakfast ($30 for walk up ordering?!?). If you're on vacation then one of those places will probably deliver the experience you want like knock your socks off unique dishes, and special pancakes with all the tropical sauces, etc. But for locals, I just don't want to pay an arm and a leg to get solid tasty food. Hannara is that dependable, tasty diner food where they have a huge menu, booths, and super friendly service. The food comes out super hot and cooked to however you like. For breakfast, their Banana pancakes were honestly better than many national chains. Best part is that everything was reasonably priced $12 for my hotcakes combo plate, same for burger and fries. Hubby and I came here for breakfast. I just wanted a spam, eggs and rice breakfast. I got my eggs over easy with spam and white rice. Everything was good. Hubby also ordered banana pancakes for us to share. This was amazingly delicious. Butter and regular syrup on top. So good. The pancakes were moist. I drank orange juice. Orange juice was cold and tasted fresh. So good. My meal was good even though it was simple and it filled me up along with half of the banana pancakes. There were lots of sliced bananas in the pancakes. Service was good. The waitress came by a few times to check up on us. Descent service. There's a few parking stalls up front. I've lived on Waianae Coast from 1977-1999. The only good restaurant on the coast were two Chinese restaurants and Hannara. So, I came out to visit my brother, Phil. Hannara is an American, Japanese, and Korean food. It's been years! Same old interior... maybe had replaced the bottom vinyl of the booths. But all in all, they are thriving all these years...real mom and pop place. The door is real decent. I ordered Japchae, Korean rice noodle dish with beef, zucchini, carrots, and onions...served with rice, macaroni salad, side dish of heathy serving of Kim Chee and seaweed which I shared with my brother who ordered chicken Katsu. You can't screw up chicken Katsu...Lol! The Japchae was unbelievable and tasty! You don't need rice, rice noodle was enough in its own sauce (shoyu sauce, sugar, julienne carrots-scallions-spinach-shiitake mushrooms) plus bulgogi meat. I save the rice for another meal and ate macaroni salad with Japchae giving a slight richness. Wow, what an amazing meal! Staff was friendly and quick to bring everything we needed. Legitimately one of the best cups of coffee I've had anywhere. Normally I do honey or sugar in my coffee but this was sweet enough just black. I had only ordered a soda but when my wife remarked that I had to include how good the coffee was I said sure but let me taste it... I immediately asked our waitress for a cup - delicious! My wife and I both got the fried rice omelette, I opted for the fried potatoes and my wife got the hash browns. Fried rice was awesome, the cheese was a nice touch and the omelette itself was well cooked and folded nicely. It wasn't a cheap meal for breakfast but the quality and quantity of food was well worth it. I'm sure we will be back for another enjoyable meal! read more

Hannara's been on my radar for a minute! I've heard a lot of good things so I had to jump on this opportunity to try them out. I ordered the Hawaiian plate and my other half ordered hamburger steak. Hawaiian plate was okay. Kalua pig was very good. Lots of flavor and very moist. Laulau was also tasty. But the beef stew was such a let down. The stew meat was hard and the potatoes were not cooked - hard and crunchy. Had to pass on the stew, and it was what I was really craving. Hamburger streak unfortunately didn't hit the spot either. The hamburger was more like meatloaf and the gravy was meh. Only if they grilled the hamburger so it wasn't just mush. Two plates and two drinks just shy of $40, for plate lunch. Okay, our go-to for breakfast during this stay in Oahu has been Countryside Cafe, but I wanted to try something different. My husband was reluctant to step outside of what we knew was good, but I like to "sample" lots of different places, so he half-heartedly agreed to try something new. Hannara was sitting right off the main drag, so we stopped. There were lots of locals here and the place was pretty busy. You have to use hand sanitizer as you enter or they won't seat you, although they didn't check vaccination cards or IDs. All staff had on masks. The person at the front pointed to a table and told us to take a seat. After sitting and waiting for awhile with no one checking on us or giving us menus, I thought, "Okay, what does it take to get service?" Not a good start and I knew I'd never hear the end of it from my husband. A minute later and the friendliest, sweetest waitperson came to our table! She thanked us for waiting and made up for all the time we just sat there. She brought us our coffee and menus quickly and remained upbeat and friendly. I ordered the Breakfast Plate that included 2 eggs, a starch, and whatever meat you wanted and it was only $7.95!! I had my eggs over-easy with 2 scoops of rice and a hamburger pattie; she asked if I wanted gravy and, of course, I said yes! The hamburger pattie was huge and the gravy was so, so delicious... definitely made from drippings and not a mix! The pattie itself was very flavorful and tender, cooked just right. With the eggs, rice, and gravy, it was Loco Moco Heaven!! It was so much food that I could only eat half of my order; that means leftovers for tomorrow's breakfast (woohoo... two meals for $7.95!!)! My husband ordered the 2 stack of macadamia pancakes (also $7.95) with a side of Portuguese sausage ($4.25). The pancakes were as big as the plate and very tender, fluffy, and chock full of chopped macadamias. The side of Portuguese sausage included 5 good-sized diagonal slices. I would've just ordered the combination pancakes with a meat side (much more cost effective), but my husband never looks at cost and practicality! He couldn't finish his meal either, so at least he'll have food for his breakfast tomorrow, too. The waitfolks came back to check on us and refill our coffee several times; so sweet and attentive! So, what started as a not too great experience ended up as a super duper one. I'd go back in a heartbeat! read more
