Beginning with instantaneous responsiveness when I first emailed, and ending with the detailed email for dress care and suggestions for photo poses that led to me being a phenomenally glamorous bride on my wedding day. When I arrived to her studio, Hanna was warm, welcoming and kind and immediately I felt comfortable. She showed me her gorgeous gowns, took photos and videos that she sent to me later so I could share with my friends and sister and get everyone's opinion. I fell head over heels in love with the palace gown. But. I am a inner city, Bay Area school teacher which means school teacher wedding budget. After falling in love with the gown (the sample fit me almost perfectly!) hanna offered to sell me the sample at a discounted price...needless to say..I SAID YES TO MY DREAM DRESS!!! Hanna and her seamstress made the small adjustments and I was able to pick up the dress just 2 weeks later. My idea of the perfect wedding dress changed as I got older. In my twenties, unfazed and emotional baggage-free, I thought about the fairy tale gown, complete with cathedral train to match a full-blown Filipino Catholic wedding. This was the gown that my talented Mother should have sewn for me. That dream was squashed when she passed away. And as an 'older bride', I wanted something simple and elegant. I called the Hanna Hartnell boutique, only to discover that bridal salons in the Bay Area do not carry her dresses. But they do have a "mail-order bride" program. I spoke to the designer herself, Hanna, who explained the process: With a $50 charge, three sample designs in sizes close to your basic measurements are sent to you. If you decide on purchasing a gown, the $50 deposit is credited against your account. Such a novel idea - trying on gowns in the comfort of your own home -- free of the hard sell, not competing for mirror space and sales assistant attention. I invited my assorted coterie of fashion consultants - Aunties, my sister, friends and cousins. I sashayed in my Dad's living room in three styles: Firebird, Peacock and Phoenix. Hanna's styles are glamourous, simple and sexy. I selected the Peacock dress - for its retro-glamour and its versatility for a beach wedding and for my wedding celebration -- a party weeks after our intimate ceremony. Despite the body skimming bias cut fit, the thigh-high side slit and the bare back -- this was surprisingly the dress I needed to work out the least for! And, when I asked my Aunties which dress Mom would have liked, all signs pointed to the Peacock. I loved the personal attention that I received from Hanna herself. I received several phone calls and e-mails from Hanna to know my style and status on the dress. What other salons could I have spoken to the designer? I'm not a celebrity, so Vera Wang or Monique Lhullier won't be talking to me. Two other bonuses: no alteration fees as the gown was made to my measurements that I faxed to her. It fit perfect. And although I was quoted about 4 months based on the general schedule, my gown was delivered in a month. When I placed the order for my gown, I got choked up. Okay, here's the story. My friend and I traveled from Pacific Palisades, to downtown LA then rolled down through Beverly Hills finally winding down into Century City on a hot Saturday afternoon. We could Not find the right dressses for the wedding. Alas! I got my booty on Yelp and found Hanna Hartnell in Santa Monica. I called while my friend was driving, it was 5:30 PM. Hanna answered and said she was with another client and would stay open for us if we were willing to wait until 6:00 to 6:30 PM. My friend hit the pedal to the medal and we landed at this small very elegant boutique. We hung outside the window looking at these freaking amazing dresses...sweating. We tried to wait to ring the bell until 6:30 PM but couldn't hold on any longer, we rang at 6:15. At that point, this tall amazingly beautiful woman struted down the isle (as if on the catwalk). She welcomed us with open arms into her amazing design studio. We browsed through the racks, then sat down and had some tea and talked about the vision. I had a very distinct vision in my head of what I wanted for a wedding dress, but could not find it anywhere. I had come to the conclusion that I was going to have to design it myself with the help of the right designer... where to find her? As luck would have it, I was steered in the direction of Hanna Hartnell by someone in a bridal shop in Beverly Hills I was in town until the following day and was able to get an appointment before returning to the Bay area, where I live. (She has no sales people so an appointment is necessary and she is very accommodating and flexible). Firstly, her salon is beautiful, very classy, very much like Hanna herself. She is a striking woman who focuses on you and listens intently to what you want. Our first fitting went very well and as she pinned and moved the silk sample dress on me we started to see where things could go. I was excited to say the very least when I walked out and had a date to return back for my first fitting of the dress a month later. Let's set this straight, I had HIGH expectations. I wanted, a couture like dress. A "wow" worthy dress. My expectations came from being an international fashion model who has worked with many of the top designers around the world. Let me say this, Hanna is an OUTSTANDING designer. She knows how to create a piece of art in a dress, to drape it to perfection to your body and to piece all the perfect trimmings that make a dress, special and different. The girl knows how to cut on the bias like nobodies business. She gave me ideas I would never have thought of that made the dress truly magical. She is detailed oriented without being fussy. She knows how to make you look your best. Just as a good designer should! And who doesn't want to look their best on their wedding day! I had three fittings in total and each time I fell more and more in love with the dress... it was so simple and elegant and yes, just sexy enough... we added a little shrug made of the same antique French lace that covered the gown and a gorgeous feather shrug! I also met with her sewing staff who were lovely and I most certainly felt like I was in the best hands of caring professionals. When the time came for the dress to be shipped I had a moment of panic of "what if" it got lost! Hanna assured me she had been shipping for 30 years and never had a problem. As promised the dress showed up packed to perfection. She called me to check that the dress had arrived and talked me through how I should hang it. Amazingly enough it never even needed a steam/iron after hiding in a closet for a month and being driven a few hours to the wedding site. I have walked down many runways around the world in some of the most spectacular designs, but never have I felt more beautiful and radiant than in the dress Hanna designed for me for my wedding. I received more compliments than I knew what to do with, even the men were raving about the dress! Most of all my husband!! Which was exactly what I was going for... There is a photo a friend of mine took of me walking down the aisle from the back and it looks like something out of Vogue... Absolutely stunning... After all was said and done I wanted to have the dress preserved and I called Hanna to ask if she could recommend someone in my area. Within 30 mins she called me back with the name of a company that she had researched and even called to speak to, to ensure they knew what they were doing. To the last detail, she shows up. If you are looking for a custom made wedding dress that you can wear again, that fits beautifully, drapes sensationally, is totally photogenic, that is super comfortable and that you can dance the night away in, this is the place to go. Hanna is a top-notch designer with a wicked good eye for the cut and fit of a dress. She has such a wide-ranging understanding of styles across the century that she can make your gown match whatever style you most desire, while still creating a gorgeous wedding gown. I was not your typical bride. I have to say this because having a wedding and dress shopping were never high on my priority list, ever. Then I got engaged and some girlfriends helped me go dress shopping. I was totally put off by the majority of bridal shops that we went to, and then my friend Donna was like, "Girl, we are going to Hanna Hartnell's" and when we walked in, it was like every idea I'd ever had about a wedding gown was in one place. The fabric Hanna uses is sensational. Its a thick, lush, high quality silk charmeuse that just has a fantastic feel, doesn't snag, pill/pull and it just laps around your curves. I had a few more curves than I wanted for the wedding and I wasn't going to starve myself into a dress. That was never an issue. The gown fit so beautifully! At heart, I am also a pragmatic woman and I didn't want to buy a gown that I couldn't wear again. The wedding dresses come in two layers and you can have two dresses for one! I had a gorgeous wedding gown, and now I also have a sensuous, lovely olive green evening gown. I loved the styles so much I actually bought two dresses from Hanna (wedding dress and rehearsal dinner gown) I also commissioned a set of scarves for my bridesmaids from Hanna and she personally worked with me to figure out the different colors I wanted to dye each of the scarves and the fabric she picked for those (cashmere/silk) was just to die for. I am waiting for the next occasion where I can order more scarves and buy another dress. Hanna's prices were totally reasonable for a bespoke wedding dress and she was punctual, fun, professional and she is a lovely, lovely human being. You would be a lucky woman to buy one of her gowns, for a wedding or any other occasion. I cannot thank Hanna Hartnell enough for designing a dress that makes me feel both comfortable and confident. I'm 24 years old and got married at Bluff Park in Long Beach, CA. My husband and I had an small standing ceremony with 10 of our closest friends and family members. Our wedding day was simple and beautiful, just like Hanna's dresses. My husband and I spontaneously decided to get married in two weeks, giving us very little time to prepare. With our small DIY wedding and limited budget in mind, I avoided bridal salons and instead shopped the stores along Santa Monica's Third Street Promenade. With New Year's Eve just a month away, cocktail dresses were everywhere (a lot of sequins). Although a couple of the dresses were cute, they were more appropriate for a party than a small wedding ceremony. The sun was setting and I hadn't tried on a single dress. I knew that I was looking in the wrong places. I Yelped "wedding dresses," and Hanna Hartnell appeared. I called and, despite my limited budget, she was more than happy to work with me. When I entered her design studio, I admit that I was a hesitant to wear an all silk gown. I'm in good shape and typically wear small-to-medium size clothing, but the thought of wearing an all silk gown made me feel a bit self-conscious. Worry aside, however, I tried on an ivory sample gown (size extra small) that was shorter in the front than in the back. My husband's eyes lit up, and we both smiled. All of my worry went out the window, and I knew that I had found my dress. Luckily, Hanna had the same dress in blush and a size small. It was perfect! Hanna Hartnell is a very talented designer who celebrates the natural beauty of a woman's body. I use the term "woman" deliberately. I can only comment based on the fact I saw a gorgeous gown in the store window and had to stop to look. Little to my knowledge, Hanna was standing by the doorway and waved us in. Little to my knowledge that was her name. I had just mentioned to my friend that I always loved the name Hanna and how I've never met a mean Hanna. Coincidence? Anyhow, I raved to her about how pretty the dress was and noticed a beautiful lacing pattern on the rack. She immediately pulled it off the rack and had me try it on. The veil!!!! If I can just wed in this I'll die happy. This sort of showed me how welcoming she was for a random stop. I had no plans on looking for a dress, but drawn into her store because she was enjoying showing me her collection. When it does come down to it I would come back. Hanna Hartnell is the most amazing woman /designer ever! She absolutely saved my wedding and made it the perfect day! I bought a sample dress in TX and had it altered there. I received the dress in the mail 2 weeks before the wedding and it did not fit. I was horrified. The shop where I bought it told me there would be no problem turning that dress into a trumpet shape, which was a total lie. I found Hanna on yelp and went to her for help. The dress was just doing nothing for my body. In the middle of my bridal distress Hanna brought out one of her gorgeous dresses and had me try it on...it was THE dress...the one I had been looking for. After seeing it on, I could not have the wedding without it. Since I had only had a week until my wedding at that point, Hanna let me buy the dress off the rack. The dress was made for me...it fit almost perfectly. A couple of minor alterations, and I walked away with my dream dress the next day! At the wedding everyone there was amazed at the beauty of my dress,,,I felt like a princess! The dress was the biggest hit of the night AND my body looked great in it! Last year I was searching for a simple yet elegant wedding dress. I have a unique style so I knew going to a bridal shop was not where I'd find my perfect dress. Despite the fact that I live in NYC, I travel to the west coast for business and had free time during a trip so I decided to look at some of the designers I saw in the bridal magazines. The words "too expensive" came out of my mouth first. All of the dresses I really liked were over $6000 and I just couldn't justify spending that amount of money on a white dress I'd wear once and have to find a way to resell. In the Maggie Sottero shop the gal asked me what I was really looking for. My description of a silk, sleek dress sent me to Hanna's shop in Santa Monica. The moment I walked into the store I just knew this was the place! Hanna took time with me to try different styles and then measure and pick the right colors. She fitted me that day, designed the dress and with only a single fitting after the dress was shaped, I had a spectacular dress for a reasonable price. This dress I will use for sure again for a special event and I'm quite certain it was the right choice to make such a stunning, personal dress for my special day. I walked past Hanna's shop before I was engaged many many many times. I really admired the elegance and detail of the dresses on show. When I started looking for dresses, it was actually a friend and Hanna's previous client who recommended Hanna's services. Hanna and I arranged an appointment and I came by to try on some samples. Hanna and I had an instant connection and I love her vibe and warm personality! Before we got started Hanna and I chatted and she got a feel of what I was looking for. The first sample I tried was perfect! It was if Hanna had read my mind. I felt like I never wanted to take it off! Hanna is so easy to work with. I absolutely loved my experience! About the dress: My dress is reversible, I choose some tones and Hanna found the match fabric. Hanna made my dress Pearl on one side and Grape on the other. This is a great find. The gowns are beautiful and very unique. You won't find this style in the traditional gown shops. Hanna Hartnell is amazing. First, I am very thankful Hanna has created a Mail Order Bride system so that I would be able to order my wedding dress from across the states. She listened patiently and excitingly to my thoughts and ideas. She offered advice to improve on my ideas. Then, she explained how the Mail Order Bride System works and what I should expect. We communicated mostly though email and occasional phone conversations. After speaking to Hanna I felt confident that she knew what she was doing and trusted her 100%. I could tell Hanna has the passion and talent to custom make any dress to fit any body type. She knows what she is doing. I am amazed how she was able to alter my dress according to my measurements and photos. A couple weeks later I received a lovely package in the mail complete with my wedding dress, a charming garment bag and hanger. I put my dress on and loved everything about it. The fabric quality and texture was what I expected. However, there were a couple alternations that needed to be done to make it picture perfect. I explained the problem areas and emailed photos of myself in the dress. Hanna is very perceptive on alterations. She took the time to explain to me how she would complete these alterations and the detailed explanation convinced me she knew what she was doing. Fortunately I was able to visit Hanna's boutique for final fitting. It was a lovely experience! Hanna welcomes you into her home and creates a very personalized visit. A couple weeks later I received another lovely package in the mail. I tried on my dress and my mouth dropped. I was so amazed of how Hanna did it. My wedding dress fits beautifully. You can tell the dress was made for me; she did a wonderful job! It really is a piece of art. Overall, Hanna was very accommodating and helpful throughout the whole ordeal. I visit LA from NYC to do some early dress shopping. I was so impressed by Hanna Hartnell that it will be very difficult to shop in traditional bridal boutiques after this. There are so many wonderful things that stand out about the experience of looking for a dress at Hanna Hartnell's studio- I will do my best to summarize! For one, her friendliness and customer service is impeccable. She spend a total of 4.5 hours with me over two days just for the initial trying on of dresses. She truly enjoys her work and this really shows. She took great care to understand my particular hopes for a dress (I'm leaning away from a white dress- I'd like to be able to dance in it...etc) and paid attention to even the smallest details. She's incredibly talented! She knows every dress she has in her studio and how to work with it for your particular body. The dresses are made exactly for your measurements and she even will adapt her dress models to your figure as she's making the dress. This resulted in one thing- I felt I could trust her and her knowledge of the fabrics, cuts, and dresses completely! Her dresses are unique, sensual, and fit incredibly well. Hanna is great! I was specifically looking for a wedding dress that did not take the shape of a lamp shade...and Hanna had exactly what I was looking for. I also wanted something unique. I felt sexy and elegant on my wedding day, and it was great. I still get compliments on my dress and we were married a year and a half ago. My photographer even commented that she had shot hundreds of weddings and never seen a dress like mine and so unique. She loved shooting the open back. Hanna spends so much time with you and it's fun to get to know her and her life story. (She's got a great one). I waited over two years to write about my experience with Hannah because I wanted to be fair and unemotional in my review. My beautiful son is married now, I'm a brand new grandmother, and life has certainly gone on. In 2014 Hanna made a lovely first impression in her cozy, home/office workspace, with her darling, elderly dog fast asleep beneath her desk. She was friendly and upbeat, and I liked her right away. I felt I was in good hands when I brought her my sleeveless, Mother-of-the-Groom dress, so she could add those sheer stretchy sleeves that give the illusion that I might have really nice upper arms for a 60 year old. Ha! Instead though, she used a rather loose-fitting, flimsy but still heavy-looking silk, which was not transparent and gave a weighted down effect to my light and breezy dress. The material just did not go, and it wasn't what I envisioned or what I thought I had described. With the wedding now just weeks away, we agreed that I would send her pictures of dresses that had the sleeves I tried to describe, and so off to Nordstrom's I went. What happened next shocked me. When I called Hanna from Nordstrom's after emailing her pictures, she became completely unglued. Furiously, she began screaming at me at the top of her lungs that she was not going to fix the dress, and that I better get in there (her shop) and get it, and then she hung up on me. Just like that. So, there I was, two weeks away from my son's wedding, standing in the middle of Nordstrom's crying my Mother-of-the-Groom head off. My experience with Hanna was simply not a good one. Interestingly, the day I returned to her shop to pick up my dress she was with new customers and - I suspect to impress them - she was absolutely delightful to me as she handed me back my dress. I didn't say a word, just turned around and walked out. It was a Dr. Jekyll, Ms. Hyde experience for me. In case you're wondering, I was able to find a dressmaker to re-do the sleeves, but I bought the material myself just to be safe. Lesson learned. read more

I thank my lucky stars I found Hanna Hartnell!! I was very underwhelmed while searching for wedding dresses-- everything was either the same design over and over again (again with the A-line strapless?) or waaaay over the top (I am not a fairy pricess). But the dress I got from Hanna was so unique and special without being showy. It feels really classic and I just feel amazing in it. On top of that, you get the experience of having somebody make the dress to your specifications. You're not dealing with some grumpy seasmstress they keep in a backroom (like in other bridal boutiques) or with salespeople with a quota. You get Hanna, who is patient, friendly, funny, and genuinely wants you to be happy and look fabulous. She has an artist's eye and she can make small tweaks to her design that compliment your body and personality. She takes pride in her work, which shows in every detail. She also made a mother of the bride dress for my mom which looks great. My mom has a tough body to fit and is very picky but Hanna worked with her and the results are wonderful. The best part is, when my mom started having second thoughts about an aspect of the dress, Hanna was extrememly patient and made adjustments until my mom was totally comfortable. I almost don't want to tell anybody about Hanna because I don't want the secret to get out! But I'm a sucker for good service. read more

I went into the store to look at wedding dresses for my beach wedding. Hanna was wonderful and understood exactly what I was looking for. She even took pictures of me in the dresses. When I looked at the pictures, I thought - is that my body? Wow, that dress hides my flaws and brings out the best features! She asked what I was looking for, phoned a client who had recently purchased similar shoes, and followed up with me the next day to tell me where to find them and how much! All this after I told her I had already purchased my wedding gown somewhere else! Additionally, she referred me to Randy for my groom's tux and Randy was a Godsend! The icing on the cake was when I called her to ask where I can get my gown steamed before the wedding and she immediately gave me a referral. Hanna is an inspiration. My aunt was the connection between us. If not for her, I don't know if I would have found her boutique, or my wedding gown. She has a dedicated and loyal following, but it feels more through word of mouth. Inside her boutique, you really feel as though you're in the design studio itself. It's exciting to wear a gown created by a woman you KNOW. That connection between the designer and the dress made the experience (and the gown), much more substantial and meaningful.
