After doing some research online, I decided to give chalk paint a try and settled on Annie Sloan brand chalk paint due to the amazing reviews. Caryn at Knot Too Shabby was listed as my closest retailer so I reached out. From our first email exchange Caryn was helpful, prompt and supportive. When I visited her store she spent a ton of time helping me pick the right color and brushes and giving me tutorials on how to apply the paint and wax. Talking to her gave me the confidence to tackle this project and it turned out amazing!

This is a smaller thrift store that definitely tries to have a good selection of stuff to go…read morethrough and can be a pleasure to browse. Just don't expect anything on the scale of a Salvation Army or Savers where you can go crazy. That said, I stopped in recently and found a nice paisley shirt and an old suitcase. Unfortunately however, the paisley shirt was way too small and will never fit me and my girlfriend said she would move out if I brought home another ratty old suitcase. I ended up buying the paisley shirt anyway but decided to leave the suitcase behind. It was a big brown Samsonite, and I wanted it. But it wasn't the hill to die on. Either way, I will continue to check in from time to time as this place could definitely yield an excellent thrift store haul if you hit it on the right day.

Today, I dropped off a small donation, and decided to look around as usual. There were two people outside the store looking over two bins of books, really nice ones, some classics. We had a nice discussion about authors, books we've read. One customer was helping another, and suggested to one employee that she could price them per box. So she stated that they go for a dollar ea. Okay, but then she changed her mind and offered $10 for two big bins instead. Ok, so the other customer said she was glad to donate them & take the $10. She didn't want to throw them out. Another customer began picking out rejected books from the garbage bin. The employee was really annoyed and stated that we are not allowed to take things out of the garbage bin. Really???? So you're going to fill up the landfill with things that could be reused. I entered the store, and this employee was arguing very loudly with the one customer who was helping the other one. The customer did not raise a voice - the rest of us looked at each other, it was embarrassing. That employee should have handled it better. Calmly repeat your store policy, or say that you cannot accept a donation for whatever reason, nicely, politely. That you take in donations and price them for sale. She was so unpleasant, I felt sorry for the customer and the rest of us. Perhaps your little store is too crowded? Think of donating books to a Veterans organization. Be polite! There is no reason to be nasty just because you are feeling frustrated, overwhelmed, perhaps not enough help in the shop. It was very uncomfortable, so I walked out.

The prices are incomparably low - I've walked out of there with a bag of stuff for less than $5 on several occasions. They have dishware, houseware, kitchenware, fabric, crafting supplies, books, movies, sheet music, toys, jewelry, and a whole room of clothing upstairs (plus fitting rooms!) If you love treasure hunting, The Barn is a must-visit for you!

I found Otafuku Okonomiyaki mix for two servings. I wasn't expecting to find it at Walmart! The company has been around since 1922 and is still family owned. They fed the populace after the war, when things were really bad. I know people who lived it and listened to the stories. I've noticed many foods, on the shelves that used to be found only in specialty and ethnic markets. It's becoming more interesting to peruse the store.

Yet, because it was only one minute after closing, the lady I believe was the manager refused to let me check out and said, "We closed 1 minute ago." Today is March 17, 2026, and this happened at 7:01 PM. I went to Job Lot just before closing and had a basket full of merchandise ready to purchase. At 7:01 PM, a lady who I assume was the manager came up to me and told me the store was closed. I politely asked if I could simply check out the items already in my cart, but she told me absolutely not because they had closed 1 minute earlier. If you review the security camera footage and timing, you will see that it was literally 7:01 PM. This Job Lot is only 2 minutes from my house, and I have been a loyal customer for many years. After the way I was treated today, I will no longer shop there. I also plan to share this experience with my friends, family, and Facebook community, because what happened was unprofessional, disrespectful, and very disappointing.

As I walked down the main street, I saw a sign out on the sidewalk that said record shop. Being a fan of independent record stores, I've been to over 100. I quickened my pace to enter. When I walked in I was greeted very warmly by the proprietors. The shop is somewhat small but very well organized. I was asked what type of music I like. I said folk rock pop Bluegrass. Sandy the woman behind the counter pointed out the folk section. Phil showed me the new arrival section. He said that if there's anything that I want to listen to in the used section. Just pass it over and I'll be happy to put it on the turntable. There is a very good mix of all types of music: folk, bluegrass, rock, pop, country, soundtracks, jazz. As well as an 80s section. Along with an oddball section.that features, records by John Travolta, Don Johnson, among other oddities. There is also a box of new releases, along with some new releases behind the counter up on the wall. The prices of everything including the new releases, were very good indeed. There are plenty of great records to choose from. I chatted more with the owners of the store, about collecting used records, the market today for new and used vinyl and the joy of listening to records on a real hi-fi system versus the poor sound MP3 files. I've been to many many record stores as I said. But I'd have to say, Sandy and Phil were the friendliest and most helpful proprietors, of a record shop,that I have encountered in my travels. I picked up Chubby Checkers folk album quite a rare find.As well as a couple of folk albums, one from Eric darling the other artist TomScott. As well as Bob Dylan's brand-new album- Shadows In The Night, The store has been open for about nine months as of January 2015. My time in the store was fantastic. Both Sandy and Phil made my experience at the stores very special. . I'll be sure to return often, to pick up many more vinyl records to add to my vast collection. The store is definitely worth a trip from anywhere in the Hudson Valley
