For a price tag of $96, we received two pints of perfect sauces, one pint of steamed and 'ground to smoothness' spinach but that is where it stopped. There was hardly any paneer in the paneer tikka masala or saagwala paneer. I ended up roasting paneer at home to make the dishes presentation worthy and Malabar curry with mixed veggies was underwhelming as all we saw for veggies were a poor portion of frozen vegetables out of the grocery store's frozen aisle. What a let down for a hefty price. Disappointed. No pictures to post because I ended up cooking after paying that money.

Here's a quick rundown: Location: they need more signage,…read moreit's somewhat hard to find, right next to a liquor store, and I mean, like a duplex, same building kind of thing. Vibe: Modern and open interior, chairs don't match, maybe too large, but lots of seating. Brown tones, concrete stained floor. Service: we were one of two tables at 6:30 on Monday. Not a large crowd. Seated quickly, ordered and food arrived timely. After that, not so much attention. Since we were the only table, after a while, I think the staff just got caught up talking to each other. We did want an extra plate to serve our dishes on, ala family style. We did get one water refill. But had to interrupt conversation to get any to go boxes or our bill. One disturbing thing was the water refill pitcher was placed on a nearby table after we got the refill and then it was placed on the second shelf of the cart they were using to bus the only other table that had departed. It was right next to some all purpose squirt bottle cleaner and right under the dirty dishes bin on the top shelf. Yikes! Food: the food was very good. The Spicy Basil was medium hot, as requested, savory, lots of fresh vegetables and a good chili Thai style sauce that was thick enough to hold and not be runny but not too thick as to be gloppy. The fried rice was okay. The Happy Family was similarly tasty and had a similar thickness/texture. The hot and sour soup was good, a little out of balance on the sour side, but plenty of vegetables as well and served with the crunchy noodles on the side. This may be a better lunch spot? It certainly wasn't crowded for dinner and I didn't see any to go orders hustling out, maybe one or two? I think the food can stand up to being a good sit down restaurant. The staff needs to be more in tune with serving and waiting the tables. I'm concerned about that water pitcher. The large dining area made the restaurant feel even more empty and less intimate or romantic than had they closed off some area and created sections. I understand it has been open for over one year, which is surprising based on what we witnessed, but it may be a lunch thing? Bottom line, the food is very good, but I'm not sure we would journey here again unless we were in the area.

I had in my head that this was a place where you could get a nice combo platter, but that's apparently only for lunch, so I had to pick one dish. I was quite happy with my selection though, with their interpretation of daal being a hearty, thick, if overly salty stew noticeably different in taste and texture than the Indian version I so often eat. It did not come with rice, but perhaps that was not so bad as ordering a naan turned out to be well worth it. A gigantic bread, it was delightfully charred on the outside and soft on the inside, and was just about right for mopping up a full plate of lentils. Adding a chai resulted in a cardamom-flavored beverage that wasn't particularly sweet. There were plenty of vegetarian selections that looked worthwhile based on what other tables ordered. I still wish I'd been able to sample more, but I was happy with what I got, and indeed I can't recall an Afghan restaurant I've been to with better-executed vegetarian dishes.
