The park is located on the main A23 road from London to Brighton, a mile and half north of the city centre, and next to Preston Manor. The main park is over 60 acres in area and includes wide open spaces of parkland with trees, formal beds along the side of the A23 road, and at the south end is a formal rose garden. Next to this is the Rotunda Cafe, which is open Monday-Friday 9.15-16h and weekends 9.30-17h. Moving northwards are 4 bowling greens and 8 tennis courts, mutli-sports areas with basket ball courts, a 500m velodrome, a children's playground, 4 soccer pitches and 2 cricket pitches. In the centre of the park is the Chalet Cafe, open daily 10-17h. Despite the all organised sport provided for, many come here just to walk or for picnics, or for nothing in particular at all. Other items of interest include a clock tower and the Hansel and Gretel-like tiled house (sadly now with its windows protected with wire mesh). As well as general recreation, the park is the location for many events during the year. The largest is the event after the Brighton Pride parade, which finishes at the Park, regarded by many as the premier free Gay Pride event in the UK. It regularly attracts over 120,000. Situated next to Alfresco and the West Pier on the seafront, it's a large playground that has climbing frames for different age groups from toddlers to 7 year olds, a sandpit and giant paddling pool. There's toilets and changing rooms, deckchairs for parents (at the cost of £2 if there's a deckchair attendant) and a wooden fence around the playground - reducing the chance of kids wandering off. The real life saver for parents however, is the fact there's three different cafes situated around the playground - so you can grab a much needed coffee, power-bar or frozen yoghurt at the same time.

I often come here to do some photography and there is a certain kind of charm in the way people fascinate the sea. They all gaze at it, some of them looking for answers or perhaps waiting for a lover which heart is at the ocean; and others like me, just contemplate its beauty. Through history, people have shown a deep connection with water, describing it in art, literature, and poetry. I'm in love with the way the lighting changes the whole atmosphere. On colder days, the sky would be grey and the waves would be high, making mad love with the ocean. On warmer days, indeed the sea could be calm and welcoming, opening its arms to embrace it's audience. Like Sophie said earlier, I think people take living by the sea for granted and don't appreciate its beauty. Because there's nothing more beautiful than the way the ocean refuses to stop kissing the shoreline, no matter how many times it's sent away.

However: -No sand! All small pebbles! Which are quite painful to walk on... -It was cold, cloudy, and windy... -The English Channel waves were quite strong and rough... I almost chickened out of going for swim...but then I saw a much older gentleman go in for a swim, giving me confidence. It also helped the lifeguard station was manned by some young, handsome, muscular British blokes. Water was cold, but surprisingly the same temperature as San Diego! No else was in the water but me and the older gentleman...lovely! Next day I went for a swim alone...it was lightly raining, cloudy, and the locals in their thick sweaters and oversized coats looked at me as if I had gone mad...shouldn't the local Brits be used to this weather by now and just enjoy the beach as its meant to? Of all the places in Britain, this is where I'd want to live :)

When I arrived at the ticketing office, I was told that one of the tanks would be closed for refurbishment. However, they didn't stress that it wasn't just one small tank, but an entire section of the aquarium. With such a large section of the aquarium closed, it was an absolute waste of £20. While the architecture is pretty, Sea Life is way overpriced for what you see. With the refurb going on, the flow of the place was messed up and the signs directing you where to go were not clear. I am hoping that I accidentally missed a section, because otherwise I paid £20 to see 2 rooms of fish. The only time I ran into staff members was in the ticketing office and gift shop, so there wasn't anyone I could have asked for directions. This place might be worth the pricey ticket after the refurbishment is complete, but until then I would skip SeaLife in favor of some of the other attractions in Brighton.

Since being refurbished to a high standard at the end of the nineties, there's also a cute cafe selling tea and cakes, changing rooms and toilets - which should all help you brave the biting winds and try your hand at some front-crawl of breast-stroke. Naturally, this being England the Lido is shut in the Autumn and Winter and re-opens annually every Spring til mid September. There's direct buses from Churchill Square in Brighton and if its a windy day, it's well worth phoning in advance to check the pool is definitely open.

There was about 80 people splashing around in their bikinis and costumes whilst behind them a gigantic screen played film footage all centred around swimming and swimming pools. There were ushers selling popcorn and people queing to sit down and watch from the raised spectator seats. It was a quietly magical experience that definitely encouraged me to go back to Prince Regent and actually swim there. As well as having a proper pool with different swimming lanes for professionals and sports fanatics, there's a shallow pool for kids and beginners and a warm teaching pool for toddlers. There's also a sauna, steam room and gym apparently - all at extra cost on a daily or weekly basis. Will post photos of the Cine City / White Night event in a few hours for swimming movie fans!

This pool itself is fairly average - it's good if it's not busy and it has 2 other seperate pools for swimming lessons and aqua aerobics (which by the way I must say looks rather fun!) The gym part of the complex is situated right above the pool so you can look up at those on the treadmills - just as they can look down at you which I guess it adds a little amusement! The changing rooms are OK, there is a fair selection of sizes including family rooms (I know I shouldn't use these but it's so much nicer to have space!). The thing is it does smell a little, as do the toilets... If you live in Brighton and enjoy swimming, there's no reason not to go here, it's just not the cleanest of complexes.
