First, lets remember we eat with our eyes... I mean not literally, that would just be messy and there are certain logistical and anatomical restrictions at play which I feel most people will understand without having to go into too much detail (DM me if you do need more detail and I shall recommend a good physician). The Hand & Spear looks amazing; outside is that very English country pub with simple yet beautiful and inviting exterior that really starts making you thirsty and hungry and ready for a good lunch or an eve of good beer and grub. The interior is likewise inviting and pretty and comfortable. the beer flowed, we start to enjoy ourselves, we sit down to dinner. The house red wine was actually very good and was what every house red should be... not the cheapest wine available but one that is reasonably priced and is of a quality the house will stand over, spot-on I'd say. it all goes a little downhill from there... the food was OK, not awful for sure but below par and presentation was lax.... it was just disappointing as we had been looking forward to it. I'd go again, on a sunny afternoon when I could sit outside and enjoy a pint. for food, I'd try elsewhere.

This beautiful pub has a charming indoor bar area, and gorgeous outdoor seating along the river. The service was prompt and food quality fantastic. We had a few pints as well, it was a record-breaking day of heat in the area, so the pints went down a treat. I wish I could go back and try more things on the menu. They have daily specials too. Someone else said the menu is limited, but I didn't feel that - perhaps they've expanded their offerings since 2011. If you're in the area and want somewhere charming, quiet and serene to spend an afternoon, you could do much worse than The Pelican.

We decided to have a starter and asked if we could get the mixed starter for 3 of us(as it's usually for 2), and the waiter was more than happy to do this. The king prawns, prawn toast and springs rolls were all delicious, but the chicken satay was immense! Our mains were also excellent, my friends both had Pahd Thai which was really nice and not too spicy. I had the Thai green curry with steamed rice, which was absolutely beautiful. Cost of the meal was not expensive at all for 3people with drinks, so we have all agreed we will definitely be coming back to sample more of the menu.

This is a large pub and eaterie on the banks of the Thames, close to the locks at Shepperton…read more It is a perfect location, and it knows it: there is a terrace at the front with lovely views of the river, boats and swanky waterside houses, which gets packed in good weather. On my recent visit, it was so busy there was a queue - orderly but 8 people long - to get to the bar. We'd booked a table, so ordered our drinks with the food. The food and wine were perfectly OK, good pub grub, and we didn't have to wait long considering how busy it was (we were warned it might take half an hour but took half that). Service was a tale of two halves: an older waitress unceremoniously plonked down our glasses with the ice bucket and bottle. She didn't even open the bottle and pour the wine, let alone let us taste it, before walking off. The younger food waitress was, in contrast, a gem: she made knowledgeable recommendations on what to choose from the menu, and was absolutely charming throughout. So she got the tip at the end of it all. I'd go back as it such a great spot, but hope for slightly better service throughout next time, which would up it to four stars.
