    Rust dripping from shower rail

I've stayed in the Hampton Inn all over the country, as I travel a lot. They usually have well-maintained facilities, with very friendly, accommodating staff. I stayed here 8 days, so I have a great grasp of this place. If there were other choices, I wouldn't have stayed here. In my opinion, the Niles location is very poorly managed and very overpriced. The price fluctuated between $114-$190 a night, depending on the day (weekday and weekend). I overheard the lady at the front desk telling another person the weekend rate was $170. They charged me $189, so I was overcharged. From the pictures they have posted, this looks like a very nice hotel. I had a different experience from those perfectly lit pictures. The first night I stayed, I reported things to the front desk. The cord to pull up the window shade was broken, and the panel to cover the wall under the phone ripped off. The phone didn't work. I went to the gym, and the water gushed out of the drinking fountain like a water hose. It splashed all over me. I checked out to travel and had to come back. They gave me a room on the 2nd floor. When I came to my room, I wanted to put my stuff in there, and the refrigerator didn't work. The phone didn't work. I reported the phone and refrigerator, and the lady said I could keep my food in their refrigerator. I don't know them, and I wasn't going to keep my stuff with the staff. There was a bad smell coming from down the hall. Someone had put their garbage outside the door, and it was really bad. I was thinking of calling the police to do a welfare check, as it smelled it something had died. Another guest and I went to the front desk to report it. The next day, housekeeping was supposed to clean my room, but never did. I came back, and it was the way I left it. Two days later, I left my hotel room around noon and came back in the evening to find my grocery bag next to the fridge gone. It had all my snacks and vitamins, including iron and calcium that I had to take. I went down to the front desk to report it to Jeweliana and she said, "Oh, I believe you," as if this had happened before. After she told me that the manager would find out which housekeeper was in my room and I could sit down with the manager and discuss compensation or replacement, they dodged me. No call, no follow-up until I finally checked out, and Amy was at the front desk. She was very defensive towards me a puffing up when I told her I was staying in a room and my bag was taken. Then she raised her voice and told me they checked the camera and saw no bag. I've never felt such a deep level of discomfort staying at a Hampton Inn. It was incredibly uncomfortable speaking to the manager, and the front desk staff were not friendly. If housekeeping threw out my bag by accident, they should admit it and compensate me. If they took it on purpose for themselves, that's a low blow. Here's more of what I experienced. The breakfast was okay, but I found the sausage at room temperature every day. I saw a huge dead roach on the lobby floor near the dining area. It appears that someone had stepped on it as it was dead. 50-75% of the electrical outlets in the rooms didn't work. The wall panel under the phone was either on the floor or cracked open, exposing the inside wall and wires. The chair in the room was stained with something. I had to put a comforter over it so I could sit on it. Smoke alarm in both rooms I stayed in had an annoying, bright blinking light. It was like a strobe light and went off continuously. There was mold around the bathroom faucet. Had to keep a washcloth near it because water would leak out when used. There was rust in the shower, running down the rail. Old coffee grounds were in the coffee maker and were never cleaned out the whole time I stayed. Scratchy towels, with brown stains on them, where some looked like blood and others makeup. Other people's hair on the pillows and linen. I'm not a ginger or blonde, so they weren't from me. The mattress was beyond needing to be replaced. The bed sheets were thin with blood stains. The comforter had dark stains on it too. There was juice or human fluids splashed up on the wall near the trash can. Also, there were more brown fluids splashed up on the wall near the bed. There was a coat of dust on lamps, and on top of headboards of beds. The air conditioner had a rattling sound coming from it. How can anyone sleep through that? I took a peek inside the vent, and there was dust and rock in there. The barn door was not installed correctly. There was a mound of sawdust on the floor. Got several bug bites on my legs while staying there. Amy and Jeweliana told me I could call the police after my bag was taken from my room. Nope. I had a better idea. I reported that and everything else to corporate, and they apologized and compensated me for the bad experience. Although that was a nice gesture, I'll never stay at their Niles location again.

Water was warm in June but very cold in September. Water temperature isn't consistent (pic was taken in June).

The staff are friendly, they go above and beyond! The rooms are clean and they keep the outside just as clean!

Comfort Suites University Area Notre Dame-South Bend - Couldn't get all of the amazing breakfast in the photo. Better than any hotel breakfast I've ever had before!

I couldn't be happier with my stay at Comfort Suites. I checked in very late (after 1AM) but was…read morestill greeted immediately by a very attentive front desk clerk. This was a nice change from many properties I've been to, where I end up standing at the desk hitting a buzzer for ten minutes while the clerk wakes up. This time, the clerk was waiting for me at the desk and very quickly got me up to my room. She also offered a later check out, which was a definite bonus. The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable. They kept it at a reasonable temperature between renters. I particularly enjoyed the in room coffee, since I slept through breakfast. One cool detail is that breakfast does go a little later on weekends. Check out was just as speedy as check in, and I was on my way less than five minutes after leaving my room. I'm in the South Bend area quite a bit, and will definitely be back.

The front desk staff was courteous, but when my card was charged there was an extra $50 added which I wasn't made aware of. When asked the front desk woman said it was a deposit that would come off if the room was found to be in good condition after we checked out. This seemed reasonable but patrons should be made aware prior to having their card run. The lobby area smelled of strong air freshener which at first I thought was a good sign; it wasn't until we got on the elevator that we realized it was used to cover the musty marijuana odor that filled the rest of the building. The elevator floor was soaked each time we got in because of all of the unsupervised kids running in and out from the pool. At least the chlorine masked the drug odor. We got up to our floor and the smell of marijuana was so incredibly strong that it was inescapable. In addition to the smell, there was trash left outside of the doors of a few rooms and under the incredibly worn carpet was an uneven floor. Upon entering our room I wanted to laugh due to the $50 deposit that I was forced to pay. Everything was in a state of wear or disrepair. There were stains on the side of the mattress, on the floor, the bedding, the couch, even the full length mirror was dirty. The bathroom door wouldn't even shut or latch. We were so tired from traveling that we just dealt with our surroundings and slept. The next morning, I noticed out our window (which faced out of the back of the building) that there was a van with someone either sleeping or living in it. This was scary as the evening before the side door had been left propped open by a rock by another alleged guest probably because the card reader was inoperable. Anyone could've come in and have access to any of the floors and their guest rooms. We went down to breakfast and could not even get near the line; there were children and adults taking plates and plates of food; they emptied things as soon as they were filled. There was no regular coffee. I used the hot water from the carafe for oatmeal and it was room temp. Once we were able to get to the food, it was very poor quality; the biscuits were crunchy, the eggs were inedible, and whatever was in the last pan was gone. I do appreciate that yogurt and fresh fruit that was available. We will be traveling to the South Bend area frequently but will never again stay at this hotel.
