I've visited many Ymca gyms throughout the country while visiting my kids and the hampshire Ymca has always had the absolutely best yoga classes. If you join the Ymca many others honor your membership. Each teacher is excellent. Well trained. You take your shoes off and enter a very clean space. Fellow yogis are respectful and focused. If you're into yoga this is the place. Multiple teachers. Multiple classes. Easy to harder flow yoga. My wife and I love this place. Zumba and barre classes are great. The parking lot is usually full so plan accordingly. Friendly staff. The building is not new but well maintained. 2 separate studios so yoga area has a clean floor and many props, blocks, mats, etc. Namaste. read more

The water aerobics classes are HATEFUL. Mean (elderly) women that do not welcome new people. They have been going for years and feel some sort of entitlement to the space. I alerted the front desk and managers, who are aware of what goes on, and they do nothing. It's absolutely bizarre. A whole gaggle of awful women that have found each other. Good for you, YMCA. this Y is really supposed to be a community space. the only issue is that it is run with such militance that it borders on fascism. it is clean and well maintained, however the big pool which is for mainly for lap swim is often too hot. Additionally when crowded the lanes are very narrow and circle swim proves problematic as various swimming speeds are not regulated or organized (and collisions given the lack of speed management are inevitable not to mention quite dangerous ) the aquatics director and other staff members are rude, scolding, belittling and humiliating. they have little regard for their motto of mutual respect (which they profess to be at the heart of their mission) . The fact is that the facility itself and the way it is improperly run inevitably will lead members to run into conflicts. the conflicts are very poorly resolved by individuals who have very limited appreciation for the obstacles that one can encounter within the premises of this poorly designed and run pool. if u are a swimmer i will advise you to find somewhere else to swim. read more

This YMCA is my favorite thing in all Northampton. It's clean, well-run, the yoga classes are great, the pool is amazing, and everyone I've encountered here is kind and respectful. I can see not everyone has had the same experience but check out the Google reviews...bad experiences are NOT the norm. The Y is an absolute gem and I feel so lucky to leave near by. read more

I have a hard time even believing the negative stories posted here. I've been going to the Y for 3 years and have always found the staff to be friendly and helpful. Not a single bad experience. And yes, rules changed for the pandemic, but that's expected. I think they've done a great job accommodating everyone while adhering to the state regulations around COVID. read more

I was really impressed with their reopening right after Covid reopenings at first...they were quite responsive and had a good system going to reservations in the swimming pool: the only thing I joined the place for. I have a regular gym membership without a pool, but needed somewhere to swim. but now I pay $60 per month for ONE PERSON and they are cancelling my spots in the pool---THE ONLY AREA I USE in the damn place b/c they are monitoring and limiting each member to only 3 spots of swim during a full week! This week a director called me up and told me she had to "cancel 2 of my reserved spots" b/c I signed up for 5 spots this week---well then she cancelled 3 of them! I signed up for spots b/c I often don't know if I will be swimming until the night before the AM swim... then I un sign up if I decide not to go. What a crock of you know what! I am really irritated and d/c'd my membership as of October 31! read more

I loved the Y until yesterday. I dropped my daughter off at child watch and had previously received an e-mail saying I could use the outdoor space to work due to COVID they have relaxed their rules. I need privacy because of HIPAA so I planned to sit in my car. IT WAS NEVER EXPLICITLY STATED that I could NOT use my car so I figured this was outdoor space that was on grounds. I got there and found out that my car being in the parking lot NEXT TO the picnic tables doesn't count as outdoor space. This is how I found out: I sat down in my car, in the parking lot, next to the front door, for my meeting, and immediately started getting calls demanding that I come inside and have a meeting with them about my disrespect for the rules. I stated that I was having a meeting for work and would not be doing that right now, that I was on grounds, and could meet with them after. I hung up. They called back. I told them I would move to a picnic table if that made them more comfortable and did so. Then, two staff came outside and stood over me, with arms crossed, yelling at me that they were demanding I come RIGHT AWAY because my level of disrespect would not be tolerated. I put my supervisor on hold and asked if this was truly necessary and once again explained I was working, in an approved area. It could wait until after my meeting. Keep in mind, this is during COVID and child watch is the only respite I have had this whole time. I have been hoping to just have ONE meeting with my supervisor uninterrupted. They continued to stand there staring me down with their arms crossed, refusing to leave me alone. When I got off the phone, I repeatedly explained my position, literally stating over and over, "I am in a space you said I could be in, I'm just trying to work. Now I've had to end my meeting with my supervisor which compromises my job. I don't get why this is necessary" They repeatedly stated that I was being disrespectful to staff and would not be allowed to treat people that way. I said that I thought what they were doing to me was equally disrespectful. I told them I was going to get my daughter upstairs and we were leaving. One of them said, "No, you're coming with me to my office. We will have a meeting about disrespect at the. "y"." They moved very slowly through the doorway in a way that was making it difficult for me to pass. I moved past them. They continued to tell me I needed to go to their office. I finally lost it and yelled rather loudly that I would not be meeting with them- they have been just as disrespectful to me, that I would be getting my daughter and leaving. I was not proud that I raised my voice like that but felt I was pushed insanely far. Finally, I found a staff member who was willing to listen. I vented to her. and said I was just trying to get out of there. The other two staff members had followed me upstairs and insisted that I leave right away. So I did. I wrote a letter later, apologizing for my inappropriateness in the hopes that they would also take responsibility for how intimidating and disrespectful they were to me, and explained that from now on my husband would be the one to bring my daughter to the Y and I would cancel my own membership and have nothing to do with them. I repeatedly called and asked to speak to someone about what happened. I never received a return call. Finally, I got an email in response to the one I wrote today, stating that they were using my admission in the letter along with accounts from staff members that I was yelling to remove my membership from the Y and my husband daughter would be kicked out too, including from their summer camp. I'm glad because I don't want to take my daughter to a place like that anyway. I have NEVER had anything like that happen to me. Maybe I was having a bad day and was little short with people prior to dropping my daughter off because I was getting flustered over needing to find work space, but I spoke to no one in a way that warranted that kind of treatment, nor did I ever step one foot off YMCA property while my daughter was in their care. I've been a member at the Northampton Y for 3 years..but lately have run into frustration and disappointment with their on-going struggle to provide basic advertised amenities.. HOT water missing in action for the past 3 weeks. Taking a lukewarm shower in water that is BARELY lukewarm is upsetting. The sauna no longer gets hot enough to call it a 'sauna'..temperature reaching no more than 75 degrees F.. a nice place to take a nap.. but for those who prefer a SAUNA.. this is another advertised amenity missing in action! I take the Power Hour water aerobics class on Monday and Friday.. the Wednesday program is weak.. the Y seems to struggle finding teachers for this level class.. and did I mention that beside cool-barely lukewarm showers and a defunct Sauna room that the heated small pool is apparently no longer heated! This nonsense has been going on for the past THREE weeks..in the meantime NO information from management giving those of us TRYING to be patient about when the problem with the new apparently problematic boiler will be resolved. The YMCA costs 67.00 a month with towel service.. making it by far the most expensive gym around! Now WITHOUT advertised amenities. VERY FRUSTRATING. read more

Every Tuesday and Thursday at 6:00pm is a fantastic Boot Camp class taught by Jen. It will kick your butt in a good way! Jen is very friendly, motivating and far from an annoying aerobics instructor. She makes sure to combine strength training with cardio in 1 hour, always mixing things up from class to class. We have used jump ropes, weights, exercise balls, resistance bands and even a bosu. When you think you've gotten the most our of this workout she'll turn it up at the end of the class with a killer "Power Butt" session that is sure to give you some sweet buns!! SO disappointed. Parking is a disaster... After joining, a 'new' policy went into effect that you needed to sign up in advance for each water aerobics class. With my schedule and busy life, I am not always sure when I can attend and planning several days in advance is often not possible. I am out half a month of membership $28 at 56/month) as I have been unable to get into a class in 2 weeks. read more

I don't normally write reviews but I feel as a business owner (owner of 2 gyms) this needs to be said. I went today to drop off my nieces daughter for gymnastics. The sign in process was hectic and the woman ( I believe her name is Moe) was creating it. I sat in the parking lot for a few minutes watching the activity. I witnessed a man across the street pull in his driveway get out of his car, he was in gym attire and go in his house. I wondered why doesn't he just go across the street and work out, sounds logical right. I went back in one hour to pick her up and had to repeat the sign in process but with even more confusion. I said I am here to pick her up I have no need to sign in and you just saw me one hour ago......just a blank stare. I guess now I have my answer as to why the man across the street gets in his car and drives to a gym. This is not organized chaos, this is just chaos. read more

I want to love the Y but over the past 20 years I have made at least 5 or more membership attempts and it always ends in frustration and no access to facilities due to constant rule changes and their juggling of scheduled activities. Most of the time it is impossible to get any use out of it unless participating in a structured activity for those 16 or younger. Called today since school is out. Only option for these early teens and elementary school is the warm kid pool for a couple of hours- teen lounge isn't even open until after school. No basketball court since gymnastic equipment is too difficult to move. You'd think there would be planning for no school days. Also, my 17 year old daughter tries to work out there regularly and said all classrooms are locked when no excercise classes are in session- so no floor excercise allowed- why lock them? And who ever heard of a workout room closing at 5:30 on weekends? Most members must join just to get the cheaper program rate - in the end the membership is typically useless. What happened to the community feel when I was able to bring my 2 little kids 4 years apart and hang out in the maze room and meet other families and have my kids birthdays in the rooms that are never used. It was a sad day when that all changed (for age segregation and structure). And as the kids have grown- still no community which I thought the Y was built on- I guess I'm looking for an illusion:( read more

I've been going to this Y for 14 years. It's pretty good with cardio machines, free weights, and 2 pools. The pools are what sets it apart and helps justify the higher price for membership than other places in the area. Unfortunately, they recently started a swim team that meets at lunch (the only time I can go there) Tuesdays and Thursdays and takes up half of the lanes of the lap pool. Now it's too crowded to swim at lunch all five days of the work week from people shifting their schedules. Staff are friendly, though. I don't do the classes, so don't know about them. read more

I love the Northampton Y!! I have a lot of exercise anxiety, especially at gyms because men are just, well the worst. I have a background in Olympic power lifting, so it's hard to find a gym that has good equipment and doesn't have unwarranted male attention. But I found that place in the Y! Plus I feel self conscious of my body when I work out, and the Y is very body positive. I started just by swimming, to get myself into the habit of going to the gym, and have progressed to some weight training again. I love the Y! I feel safe, encouraged, and appreciated as a member of their community and also of Northampton as a whole. I highly recommend going here over any other gym!! I only wish they updated the Facebook or website more regularly with critical information, like holiday hours or the pool schedule when the sessions change, but they are very good about the phone! I've never been put on hold and someone usually answers on the second ring. read more
