Huge 18" pizza! Ordered the Hammers deluxe which is a supreme - all the toppings pizza. $40 which is high coming from AZ but it fed a family of 3 with a huge slice left over. We have several local pizza places in our hometown but my son says this is the best pizza he has ever had! The crust is just right, thin but chewy, lots of toppings and a minimum amount of tomato sauce with a great flavor. The owner was nice enough to take my pickup order right before he closed on Sunday. I would consider myself a pizza snob. The pizza is definitely worth it. Flavors were on point and savory. Could tell it was authentic NY style. The cannoli was meh. We moved to north county recently and were on the hunt for our new favorite pizza spot. We have been back to Hammer's several times now and every time the pizza is amazing! We get the Hammer's Deluxe and add jalapeños, it is delicious and we always have tons of leftovers for the next day. The parking lot is easy to get into, so you can order ahead and pop right in to grab your pizza to go! Our experience with Hammer's was pretty good. I liked the crust. As advertised, it's a New York style thin crust, with sauce and a small amount (relative to most) of cheese. The three topping pie I ordered (only size is 18"), came out crispy and ready to go when the guy said it would be done (30 mins.). The place is in a small strip mall. I've been a loyal Biongiorno's customer for seven years, but recently their quality seemed to decline, so I decided to try something new. Hammer's pizza is absolutely delicious, flavorful and perfectly balanced. I ordered a side of ranch (I'm a big ranch person), but the pizza was so good I didn't even need it. This was an extremely disappointing experience. You talk a big game about your New York pizza and how fabulous it i, 40 years of pizza making blah blah blah. This area is known for good pizza in this pizza was not.. there's no dining. There's no soda machine and there's no Parmesan cheese.. we asked for cheese to garnish the pizza and we're told that we would be given special cheese that they never give cheese out because the packets are crap and they're always bad which is true. However, the private selection cheese that was given to us in a stamp sized plastic container& was about a teaspoon, and it had mold in it.. We tried the cheesecake, It was mediocre at best. Said it was better than Cheesecake Factory, it was not . It's frozen from a distributor. . It was put in a plastic container frozen. The meatballs tasted manufactured from some frozen food distributor. To say this was a disappointment is an understatement. The phone didn't ring once when we were there at 5 o'clock on Friday, no customers! There are so many fabulous pizza places in Encinitas & Cardiff. This is not one of them! Don't go! read more

Went in for the first time about 7:30 on a Tuesday night. The gentleman was gracious and offered to make us a pie even though closing time was soon. It took a few minutes to decide and we chose the Hammer Deluxe. Quite simply, it was one of the best pizzas I've had in a very long time. It's definitely a take-out type establishment, so don't expect comfy tables and chairs, but we improvised and took our Deluxe to Brewer's Tap Room a block or two away and enjoyed sitting outside under a heater while sipping some delicious red blend wine by Los Cuernos, a San Diego winery. The city of Encinitas certainly has a myriad of choices. Most of the popular spots have received very good reviews on Yelp. I like Hammer's NY Pizza for its authenticity. There is just something about the beach vibe and enjoying a big slice of a east coast thin crust that always seem to go well together well. Hammer's is a small, take-out only pizza joint that specializes in the famous New York style thin crust pizza with red sauce and Mozzarella cheese. I ordered the Hammer's Deluxe, which is their 18" combination that comes topped with sausage, pepperoni, bell peppers, onions, garlic, mushrooms and olives. The slices are huge! Two of them will make for a hearty meal. A little salty, but not too bad. I would order from here again but maybe just with cheese alone or with pepperoni as the only topping. Harassed and discriminated against by the owner. He kept going on about me needing to speak up when I came in even though the door rang. It was only a second that I put my keys away. He told me four times even though I verbally acknowledging understanding. He would talk over me and didnt care what I had to say. We live in Encinitas and decided to try Hammer's after a recent trip to NYC. I will say this pizza hit the mark on everything that's essential in a NY style slice. The dough is crispy yet retains that perfect chew. It's thin crust with little flop, a perfect undercarriage, and fresh delicious toppings. Some of the best we've had in San Diego. Had a large 'roni. Nice staff, nice pizza. As desired, crust is thin, and tasty, has some crunch and chew. Very easy parking! Easy to find. I think will ask for a little "extra sauce" next time, or at least some in the side. will also probably try just a fresh slice in the store next time.. the 15 minute drive home probably didn't do our pie any favors. We took it home and added our own freshly grated parmesan and Romano and my own hot chili peppers. read more

Been wanting to try this place for a while. Maybe I got my hopes up too much. They are open 4-8pm and so the hours have not aligned but tonight I finally ordered. So the pizza crust: thin, crisp and seems like sourdough. Might be perfect for many. I was wanting it thicker and softer. The toppings seems average and light on that cheese. Decent value for food. We also got a Caesar salad and cheese sticks. I would go back but it is not a favorite spot. read more

So sad! Everyone said how great this pizza is, so we had high hopes. It's really not that special. It looks like NY pizza, but it's not. A NY slice is supposed to have a bit of a chewy crust. Some tiny bubbles in the crust too. This crust was dry. No flavor. Sauce also was not noticeable. For the one with ricotta-the ricotta is grainy. Pesto flavor was not really there (probably bc it was such a thin drizzle). To top it off, we all had stomach issues after. read more

This is a review I should have written a long time ago, when Hammer's first opened up back in 2015. Long story short, if you want first rate New York style pizza, this is the place. The better known Bronx Pizza in Hillcrest often gets the kudos as being the best pie joint in San Diego, but I would stack Hammer's against that establishment any day. I might add in addition to making a lot of traditional pizzas, Hammer makes the best stromboli you can find in North County. His cheesecake, too (although he doesn't make it), is the real McCoy. One other thing. Hammer does almost exclusively take away (there are a couple of rickety stools), but I beg you not to rob yourself of the pleasure of coming in a little before your order is ready and have a chat with him. The food ain't the only genuine New York experience here. Never at a loss to discuss almost anything, Hammer has got all the outgoing, in-your-face realness of the Big Apple. In this land of the lotus eaters, he is a refreshing change and really makes my day. Highly recommended! read more

I'm one of those, "I'm not from NY but my husband is people". I'm forever being dragged from pizza shop to shop while we seem to search for this "authentic NY style pizza". So now, I get it. Hammers is what the real deal NY pizza is all about. Right down to the shop with no inside tables (one outside) and the owner has even managed to bring his NY attitude with him -- that never hurts the legitimacy of a place like this. Bottom line? The guy knows how to make a NY pie. Thin, no too thin, perfect amount of crust, perfect amount of cheese to topping ratio and wow, it's actually cooked from the center to the crust. You can fold it, hold it, smell the goodness and if you close your eyes while taking a bite -- I almost could hear the cars driving by on the Long Island Expressway, or maybe that was El Camino Real. Don't waste your time at the other shops advertising "Brooklyn or NY Pizza". Want to know what the hype is really about? Stop here first! read more

Neat little spot. No seating, it's really grab and go. The owner, "Hammer" is clearly passionate about what he does and puts in a lot of hard work. He was the only guy back there cranking out pizzas when I went in. If the review was purely based on a hard working small business, this place would ACE it. 5-stars for that. Unfortunately I felt like the pizza was very average. Not terrible by any means, but nothing making you want to come back. There's no "wow" factor. We got the "Hammers Deluxe" pizza and it had a lot of great toppings on it. Definitely covered in toppings, there just wasn't much taste and the crust was just average. Also, for ~$33 out the door, this pizza is not cheap. One of the more expensive pizzas. Again, it was a solid pie, I guess I was just expecting a bit more for $33 and all the great reviews. read more
