Highly impressed with the OG Philly Cheesesteak Sandwich I got! I got a half sandwich with white…read morecheddar on it and it was huge! Luckily I didn't get a full one because I wouldn't have been able to finish it. I was tempted to get it with the Cheez Wiz on it but I was hesitant. I saw someone else get it while I was there and it looked really good, maybe next time I'll get it! The parking lot is pretty busy but there's plenty of places to sit inside the restaurant!

Everything about the Philly was very good, but the bread roll really stood out to me...it was super soft & fresh but had a perfect, golden, thin, crispy crust on the exterior holding everything in place and giving just the right amount of crunch to every bite. It held up to the steamy steak and cheese like a champ without getting soggy, Solid sub. And this beast is big; half is enough to satiate almost any hungry appetite. I got mine to go, but the inside is bright & spacious with a ton of seating (but parking can be a challenge). This might also be one of the cleanest sub shops I've ever visited...absolutely spotless when I was there. While in the shop, I also got the pleasure of meeting Mike, who said he bought the place from Ricky a few years back. Mike seems to be a great dude who loves what he does and takes pride in his craft. He hooked me up with a sample of the red pepper relish, showed me what kind they use, and even told me where to buy it in bulk! He also shared some of their in-house Cajun seasoning, which was pretty tasty. Before I left, he gave me a heads up to be sure to hit Dearborn Sweets next door, and even some top selections to try (FWIW....he was right). I can't wait to come back and try some of their other subs! Shoutout and thanks to Mike for making it a great first visit!

Good thing I came when I came, because it got busy as hell shortly after. I went with 2 coney dogs and a Vernors. The dogs were delicious! Messy as hell, but absolutely delicious. They come loaded with a ton of chili, onions, and mustard on a super duper soft steamed bun. The dog had a great snap to it and the simple ingredients just worked! My Vernors ginger ale soda was great, too! Never had one before. Really liked it though. Had a hint of vanilla, and was sweeter than other gingers ales I have had. I loved it! It was the perfect beverage to wash down my dogs. Service was quick and to the point. This is the type of place where you eat and get the fuck out. No lingering around talking afterwards lol. Really enjoyed my first meal in Detroit!

The Coney dog ($4) was ordered. It had the classic toppings of bean less chili, yellow mustard, and raw chopped white onions. This was solid. There was a nice bite on the chili with plenty of mustard and onions. The bread was soft and the hot dog was cooked appropriately. The chili was the key as it was hearty and meaty. Will I go back? Yeah, sure.

I was lured into Lefty's when I get a coupon in the mail for buy one get one free corned beef…read moresandwiches. I can't resist a good deal after all, even though I wouldn't normally go to one of these larger franchised chains. As I dropped in for a weekday lunch, I saw a number of people come in to pick up takeout orders. I didn't notice anyone eating inside though. #10 Corned Beef Sandwich w/ Sauerkraut ($12.64) - I found it kind of strange that you have to pay extra for sauerkraut or coleslaw - it's usually included in this sandwich at other places by default. I also wanted to get one sandwich with sauerkraut and one with slaw, but for the coupon to work apparently the topping has to be the same. The first thing I noted was how the sandwich was falling apart. As soon as I lifted one of the two cut halves, the middle portion of the bread on the bottom that was touching the sauerkraut completely fell off and the interior ingredients along with it. The rye bread is griddled, creating a nice bit of crunch on the top, but the bottom was mushy and soaked through with the sauerkraut juices. Thousand island is drizzled on top of a melted piece of white American cheese, adding a bit of sweetness and creaminess. There isn't very much sauerkraut added, but what is there is enough to give the sandwich a tang. The amount of corned beef added is a bit lacking compared to competitors, and in general the corned beef in this sandwich is weak with an overwhelming taste of salt. Barely any of the corned beef flavor comes out over the extreme saltiness. Corned beef is supposed to be salty, but this takes it to another level. I guess it's more of a commercial corned beef made for mass production and preservation rather than for taste. Overall, the sandwich is a bit cheaper than the mom-and-pop sandwich places around, but the amount of sauerkraut and corned beef included and the sandwich construction is a bit lacking. Bathrooms: Two individual rooms, one for men, one for women. Air hand dryer only. Given that Lefty's has cheesesteak in the name, I wonder why they decided to have the coupon be BOGO corned beef sandwiches instead of cheesesteaks. Not sure if it's good advertising, because it only convinced me that the food there is kind of mediocre. I certainly wouldn't get the sandwich for $12, and I'm kind of doubting going again even if they have another BOGO coupon. To be clear, I doubt there's anything wrong with this Lefty's franchise, so if you like this chain, go ham. It's just not for me.
