Wow what a good carvery and a beautiful setting!…read more We were invited to Kendalshire golf club for a surprise 70th birthday meal. I'd never even heard of it so wasn't sure what to expect. Although it's a golf course, the grounds are really quite beautiful. As we entered the club house I did have a small panic as I saw a dress code pinned to the door, thankfully it was only football shirts, beach wear and sports shorts that were banned so trainers were fine! There was indoor and outdoor seating. Our table was all prepared indoors but we had some time so took our drinks outside and enjoyed watching the golfers go by as there was a green directly in front. There is also a beautiful garden to the right that my son enjoyed running around in. Now down to business, the carvery! My first thoughts were a little disappointing as there was only beef or turkey, roasters, yorkshire pud and TWO types of veg. Every other carvery I've been to has always had a massive selection. But where this carvery lacked in selection it certainly made up for in quality. The beef was cooked beautifully and slightly pink in the middle, the turkey was juicy and you got a massive yorkshire pud! The veg wasn't over cooked at all which is normally the case. So as far as carvery's go this is the best quality one I've been to. It was £11 a head and worth every penny. As for the golf I haven't got a clue!

At the main entrance (that is, where the gatehouse is, not down in the hill around Bedminster) go straight along the road and then take the first right, going up the hill. You'll come to a little car park and a slightly desolate looking hut. The hut is where you can hire clubs and balls (remember not to smack it into the bushes...) and get putting. It's run by the council, which means its a) cheap and b) not full of stuffy old men, the two usual vices of a golf course. Give your ball a thwack and follow it round the course, nobodies going to judge you. The only downside I can think of is that things can get a bit congested, especially if the weather is even vaguely nice. You may have to wait a little while, or have people queueing up behind you, to use one of the holes. Making golf a bit less of the pursuit of old men at country clubs, the pitch and put golf course is a great way for those of us that think golf looks like a lark to give it a try.

I was almost instantly seduced by the satisfying feeling of smacking a little ball as hard as you can with a massive piece of metal, and the faraway sound of ball on deer. It's great value - £6.50 gets you 18 holes and a great view across the whole of Brizzle and beyond on a fine day. The only problem is that, when the sun's out, it can get pretty busy, and there's nothing guaranteed to give an amateur the yips more than a queue of people staring and tutting as you continually swing and miss at the ball off the tee. One tip: the course on the Bristol side of AC offers more variation, and there's even one par five hole where you can get your wood out and give it a real thrashing.

I LAUGHED MYSELF SILLY playing crazy golf here last week. 2 courses, 18 holes and an active volcano (not a real one obv). The course is spankingly new and looks like a set from Tomb Raider, all vines and fake temple ruins, swamp etc The course takes an hour in total and is a great way to have fun, and like me, get your competive edge out. You don't have to take kids with you, just go with your mates - its more active for brain and body than sitting in the pub. It's not expensive either - about £7 and lots of concessions available - kids, students and OAPs. The 'Hideout' cafe is also good for a simple cuppa and a cake after your game. Loser buys the drinks!

But he thing is, it's really expensive for what is essentially nothing more than your standard, run of the mill Butlins inspired mini golf. The holes weren't imaginative. Nothing like the mind-blowing mini golf I experienced in Queenstown, New Zealand where your ball rolled into a miniature roller coaster, and a castle, and a HUGE exploding volcano. No, this one does nothing like that. What's worse is that it's really expensive. I guess kids may enjoy it, but for anyone older that the age of 12 will find it boring and repetitive.
