On every Saturday night (apart from one a month, can't remember if it's the first or the last -soz) they have a club night called "department s" run by Bristol legend Jon The Mod and his lovely other half Jamie (Jamie runs the gimme shelter vintage boutique in the foyer of the venue) Jon has been playing in various bristol venues for donkey's years (ever since I can remember) he specialises in 60s Garage Beats, Northern Soul, 60's GROOVES, Rock and Roll, Two Tone, Tamla, Alt 80's, MOD and INDIE Anthems - ( I stole that bit from his website ) It's guaranteed to be a good night and quite often there will be a band playing, last week was the gimme Hendrix experience, a fantastic Jimi Hendrix tribute band, there is also a large courtyard for smokers but it's also a nice place to sit if you need to cool down a bit from all the dancing !

I haven't been here to play bowls, however Tuesday is open evening which is a good time to see if bowls is your thing. And to enjoy the clubhouse! The staff here are super nice and great fun to chat to. And the drinks are super cheap. They had a dinner dance here which I couldn't attend, sounded good fun, some wurzel-esque band (it could have even been the wurzels!) and grub for a mere £7 I think it was. Bargain. If you are after glam, this is not it, but its down the earth, with good company and if I had to go bowling, I'd prefer to try it here.

This club is just such a place, literally hidden between Marlborough and Sandringham Road - you don't even notice that it's there, which is remarkable given the size of it. There are both men and women's bowling teams that play both competitive and friendly games. Penylan Bowling Club now also supports the Cardiff Bridge club which meets on Tuesday and Wednesday evening. They have over 150 members, and it's a great social club. Both of these games are usually associated with more mature people, but I there are a lot of younger members here. The two clubs often hold social events like barbeques which often feature live music and dancing, and occasionally include a game of bingo.

The megabowl is a little bit irritating to get to (if you haven't got a car) but it's definitely worth figuring out a solution to that problem. I can almost guarantee that you will end up having a good time. The great thing about bowling is that you can go in a two, or in a huge group because you can book up lanes next to each other. This bowling alley has everything that you'd expect it to have (you know, shoes, the barriers that come up, the little thing children use (and adults if you want to mess around and you see there's one out - I warn you, they don't help much!)) - the usual. But the service is great. Normally it's surly pre-teens looking like they're carrying the world's woes. It's excellent here. You can also combine your bowling with meal deals, so families can enjoy. Just don't go if you don't like noise...

It could really benefit from a few signposts. Luckily for us we had some half price vouchers as the place is would be quite expensive for a large family. On entry children are assigned a wristband and with a bar coded receipt given to the parent so that a child can't leave or be taken by another parent as they are both connected. This is a pretty good idea as other venues just give you the wristband and you sign in. The venue is huge with lots of different activities for a range of ages. Wasn't happy seeing the snacks and drinks machines as I think the well stocked cafe would have been ample. It was surprisingly packed but we were quite concerned that on a coldish day, the air con was at its highest so we were sat shivering and averse to taking our shoes off. Even running around after the little one for 3 hours didn't help much. Just before lunch Jumping Beans (not exactly sure what the suit portrayed, bear or dog) held a free dance session in the football area for all of the under 4's. This was really cool and a wonderful idea. The cafe menu was reasonably priced but for fussy eaters the option to bring food in would be beneficial. A good day out, would score higher if we hadn't been chilled by over zealous air con.

It's lovely, a nice big (but not too big) main play area with 2 other smaller rooms, the toys are really fantastic, my 16 month old especially loved playing in the room with the small slides and climbing frames, she loves climbing and these toys were small enough so that if she did fall she wouldn't fall very far and it would be a soft landing. Around the outside of the main play area there are tall seats around so parents can sit there enjoying a tea or coffee and watch the children play. There are lots of snacks hot and cold drinks and things like paninis and sandwiches, I had a cheese and ham panini and it was delicious ! My only grumble came from trying to find some where to park, so if you are able WALK!! I sadly didn't have that option and had quite a stressful 10mins with a screaming child trying to park. Once inside I ordered a coffee and some lunch and found my friends. The menu is simple but nice. I had a panini which was fine and the coffee was really good. The children's menu is perfect and simple. Once we'd revitalised ourselves with refreshments we hit the play area. Most indoor play places I've been to have a soft play and a few toys but this is so much more. The play area is full of great toys, there is a whole kitchen and shop which kept my son entertained on his own for far longer than any other play. This is also closed in with seating around so you can sip coffee and chat with your eyes on your little one. Genius! It's 3.75 for the day and worth every penny if you want to meet friends and chat while your child is entertained.
