The food is very good and made fresh. The prices aren't bad either! However, the service and wait time was unacceptable. We waited 1 hour and 30 minutes before we got our food. Within that time period the waitress came to our table 1 time to give us our hush puppies and that is it. No refills or update on the kitchen time. There were also 2 tables that came in after our party of 4 that received their food before us. I'm very disappointed because the food is really worth the drive but service isn't. read more

The food here was delicious. I loved every bite. They brought out homemade chips and dip to start. I'm glad we got those. They are great. Then they brought out our drinks. I got a beer. I drank from the bottle. I'm not that good drinking out of the bottle. Next time I'll ask for a glass. The place is large and enough windows to be pleasantly bright. Besides tables inside there is a small counter area with about four chairs. And they have some tables on an outdoor patio. We came at lunch time, but we ordered for dinner because we knew we were hungry. I was looking forward to soft shell crabs. Lunch item would have been a soft shell crab sandwich. I wanted more. Dinner was two soft shell crabs on a plate with choice of sides. Side choices are mostly potatoes. Mashed, fried, tots. There was a choice of coleslaw. I got sweet potato tots and deviled eggs. All very tasty. Spouse got dinner portion of fried shrimp, coleslaw and regular tater tots. The plates were filled with great food. Yes, we had leftovers. The restaurant was full but stayed quiet. We ordered the lunch jumbo shrimp with fries and fried whiting with baked potato which comes with hush puppies and slaw, both dishes were very fresh, well seasoned and piping hot 10/5! I cannot wait to try something else! The fish was so good I ordered one to take to my daughter ( her side was the potato salad, yummy)...there was a long wait for my (they were busy, kitchen staff seemed limited but they eventually got my order out) but it was well worth the wait that fish was so so good! This place has been on the top of my list to try for years and it did not disappoint! It's a cute little family owned restaurant that you'd pass by if you didn't know it was there. It was busy when we got there but we were still seated right away. They give you chips to snack on while you wait for your food and they were delicious! They had so many specials to choose from too. I got the seafood carbonara and my fiance got the Western burger without the onion rings. I had ordered the calamari but they were out so instead had the pretzels with beer cheese. The she crab soup had a little kick but not too spicy and was so flavorful! The portions were huge! I ate about 1/4 of my pasta if that plus 1/3 of the soup before I had to take it home. I didn't even touch the salad so that came home too. My best friend got the stuffed shrimp. Everything was so good. I wish I had room for dessert because there were so many good options! Okay, this may be a generous 5 star rating. I acknowledge that. But it was definitely a 5 star experience on this day. My wife was craving soft shell crabs, and due to my own procrastination she didn't get any last year so I was determined to make up for it. So we called around and Halterman's had them. So off we went. The restaurant is in a strip mall about 7 miles from anywhere. Don't let this stop you. It is what I would consider a double storefront, with maybe 15 or 16 tables. Parking is very easy. Enough preliminaries, let's talk food. First, they bring house made chips and what seemed to be their tartar sauce as an amuse. The chips were crunchy and perfect, the sauce -- whatever it was -- was perfect for this and added a salty savory component. Next we ordered crab dip. This was not as crabby as I was expecting but the flavor was really good. Salamandered cheese/crab, well balanced. What stood out here was the deep fried pita wedges. We've had them baked, never deep fried. They were crisp on the outside, pillowy on the inside. Good temp control, nice bite. Then the mains. Wife had the soft shells. Came with two sides, she chose fries and deviled eggs. The soft shells were cooked eastern shore style, lightly buttermilk breaded and fried. They were exactly what she had been craving. Sweet, just at the perfect stage of soft. And the mustard was still intact -- so many kitchens remove that, and it is a mark of skill for my wife that it was there. The fries were beach-style, and we immediately asked for vinegar to augment. The deviled eggs were good for a restaurant. I had fish and chips. 3 generous pieces of fish (there's an option for just 2) with more of those fries. The fish was breaded well, and cooked to perfection. I believe they are using cod, which is an acceptable fish for this dish. I ate two, and the third piece was a nice lunch, even cold. Tartar sauce was perfect, cocktail sauce was a bit tame -- needed more horseradish. Service -- absolutely flawless. We unfortunately kept the young man running for various things we discovered we needed, and he executed without any sign of stress. Also, the hostess was obviously thorough in disinfecting tables and seats between guests. We could not have asked for a better meal or a better experience. Look, it's a fried fish place. And it has other comfort food types of things (and from a previous visit, I can promise you the desserts are good.) But taken for what it is, this is an excellent fried fish place and worth the drive. read more

We shared the seafood platter (shrimp, crab cake, fish, scallops, oysters, hush puppies) with succotash and a baked potato--it's more than enough for two people, and we still had leftovers. People keep talking about this place. It is worth the drive and yes, it is a little bit of a drive but I have to say it's some of the best seafood I've had in the greater RVA area. We did order too much for two people, but we could not decide what to order The seafood stew was a heavy cream soup with scallops, shrimp, and oysters. My boyfriend's favorite things were the crab balls which were like miniature crabcakes with barely any extra filling lots of crap. The crab dip was scrumptious with lots of cheese and we did the mixed shrimp and oysters, and the oysters were like butter they make their own sauces. My mother and I have been twice and the service is point on every time. Both times were during a rush of customers but you are still seated pretty quickly. Now to the good stuff... the food! Guys when I tell you if you are a fan of seafood you want to stop here. Everything of crab was just that crab meat but picture without all the filler, the home made chips and ranch dressing you get like you would bread at other restaurants and it comes warm to your table! My family loves going here--and with good reason. Let's start with some basics: The staff is friendly, the restaurant and its facilities are accessible for those with mobility issues, and it appears to be very clean. The food is very good. Everything I've had has been great. The highlight for me will always be their oyster stew--it is truly something special. Everything else is DELICIOUS, but this is in some other category entirely with its perfection in its simplicity. The quality of the seafood is fantastic. It is VERY fresh. I won't even shout out specific dishes because it's just great--you pick out what it is that you like, and I guarantee you'll enjoy it. It will be of good quality and flavor. If I could improve this place, I would suggest that they need to work on their kitchen timing so everything doesn't come out all at once and they guide their waitstaff a little bit. I want to savor my soup or the table's appetizer. I don't want to be halfway through and suddenly I've got platters of food bearing down on me. The tables are small enough that it basically because impossible to accommodate everything, so you end up having to pack up your appetizer or abandon things to take your mains. I would also suggest that the management help guide the waitstaff on a few basics: 1) Bus as you go. Please don't leave dirty plates at the table. 2) If you put things into a to go bag/container, and there are a empty tables all around you, don't be afraid to say, 'I'm going to put this at the table here, behind you,' or even 'I'm going to put your leftovers here at the bar, and I'll bring them to you before you leave.' If you've put us in a position where we've got a small table, big platters of food, and you've already forced us to pack up our apps, where exactly do you think we're going to stick the bags while we try to tackle the mains? BUT these are areas for improvement at a place that's already doing so much right. Make time to stop at this gem. Ask for a bigger table if you're getting apps--and you should. Went here for supper today and it was the worst I have had in a long time. I had fried talipia with collards and sweet potato with hush puppies. The dish looked great when it arrived but after I tried the fish the black skin was left on the bottom and making it taste fishy. Ugh collards were the worst I ever had the sweet potato was stringy and the hush puppies were over fried. Needless to say that will be the last time I eat there. The some food items are just good but it is all very expensive for this area and economy. The SERVICE IS amateurish every time with long wait times for food. Server loudly pandered at tables for better tips (sigh) while we waited for any service. So Halterman's is pricy with some pretty good food items but has sloppy diner service. Hate to write a bad review for a family owned place but... we waited 10-20 minutes to even get drinks an hour to get our appetizer which was cheese curds and they actually tasted good. We ordered our main food at the same time as the appetizer and then waited another 40 minutes to get the main on top of the hour we already waited. The waitress was very nochlaunt and unprofessional she never checked on us we ordered crab cake sandwiches and Hush puppies- the crab cake had literally no taste at all the tomato was more flavorful and then waited 30-40 minutes to get the check then after waiting some more time the waitress tells across the e at a kid telling him to get the check and card off the table for her.... ANDDD then the loaded baked potato that was ordered as a side finally came out after we paid and was ready to leave and were told just then that they were backed up making them, why not tell us that in the first place?
