When I stepped into Halloween City, I carried with me the excitement and hopefulness of a child. I…read moresoon had that ripped away from me, and was thrown headfirst into the Twilight Zone. My friend and I were thrilled when we found the perfect Poison Ivy costume I had been searching for. We checked the price--not too much. Tried it on--perfect! We went up to the register and suddenly things spiraled out of control. I couldn't believe how good of a deal I was getting, until the tally started to climb up past the seventies. "That doesn't seem right," I thought to myself. I checked the price tags again. What was happening? The price that had previously read $14.99 now said $26.99. And so on. What? This doesn't make sense! In a state of pure catatonia, I handed over my debit card, unable to dispute. As I left the store, exiting the Twilight Zone, my friend snapped me out of my stupor to find out what happened. I explained to her what happened, and she agreed that she had also checked the price of my costume pieces several times, not believing how reasonable the price was. We left feeling violated and confused. As I sank into the passenger seat, too traumatized to drive due to the emotional and financial rape I had just endured, I pulled out my receipt. Scanning it frantically, my eyes fell to the bottom, along with my heart: "ALL SALES ARE FINAL." My only attempt to explain what happened to me is that a store employee, or some sort of lowly criminal, hired to do the dirtiest of their work, followed us, learning our habits and innermost desires, searching for a way to crush our spirits in the most savage of ways. After lifting our hopes and spirits to the sky, he brought them to a crashing halt as he drugged us and switched the price tags on the items that we had been daydreaming about for months. The sad reality of this incident makes me feel as though I've succumbed to a dark, empty, existence in which I will never experience the joys of festive tricks and treats again. Also, my friend tried to buy a leotard marked $9.99, and the nigga tried to charge her $30.

HIDDEN GEM ALERT! I have passed this unassuming spot a million times and never stopped by until…read morethis weekend when we were in need of supplies for a friend's halloween costume. When we entered the building I instantly realized that the store is huge (though only part of it is accessible to customers). The store has LOTS of supplies in the back that are catalogued. Think they don't have what you're looking for? Ask first, but their products are also listed online. The door was locked when we arrived, but the gentleman working quickly came over and let us in. He also took us to the makeup room to peruse a bit too. The prices seemed super fair. Honestly, I thought that Theatre House blew their competition in the city out of the water. I love cappels downtown, but their prices are higher and it's a more crowded/compact store. The whole experience at Theatre House was great and I'll definitely be back!

This is one of those places that I've driven by countless times and thought, hmmm I wonder what…read morethat place is? Well, I finally had the chance to patronize it and I found it to be a surprisingly nice place. Similar to Cappel's and other costume/theatre places, Theatre House has a lot of stuff under one roof. the setup of the place is reminiscent to Service Merchandise and by that I mean that most everything is not visible to the general public, rather it is stored in the back warehouse. One can view their products online and bring in the id number and tada, you now have that costume or whatever. They do have a few catalogs that one can peruse and then tell a worker to retrieve for you. It's like having your own personal shopper, ha ha. They do have tons of hats and masks and some general costume items on display. I did find it a little off putting that the hats were like 10 feet above the ground and not really visible up close. Oh well. The worker that assisted me was friendly, knowledgeable, and fast at retrieving the items I needed. Prices are fair and there was even a discount section for bargain hunters. Parking is right out front and free. So, whether you are looking for a crazy, sexy, scary, weird costume, or just need some theatre makeup, this is a place to check out.

Ha..you know..you get what you'd expect from shopping at a store like Halloween City…read more A decent selection of costumes and Halloween related items at extremely outrageous prices. And they always take over the vacated locations of failed retail stores. Always casts a depressing light on the shopping experience (ie: remember this used to be a Circuit City? I loved Circuit City. I miss Circuit City. I wish this was still a Ciruit City :( (not talking about this location specifically, just saying that's how it generally is..not sure what this location used to be..it's next to the super Kroger..I can't remember..oh man, I've been talking in the parenthesis for a while now..and I think I'm in a parenthesis of a parenthesis at this point..need to get back to the review.)) Anywho, I shopped at this location the Sunday before Halloween because I am always a last minute shopper. Everything was pretty picked over. All that was left was some super expensive crap, and some moderately expensive crap. I went with the moderately expensive crap..and it had an additional discount attached to it because they were trying to get rid of it. The cashier looked depressed to be there (didn't blame her..she was going to be out of a job in a couple of days). She didn't know how to ring up the discount..she called someone over to help her..they did something and walked away..the item still wasn't discounted..she called her back over and they finally figured it out. Fun times. Anywho, I don't know, shop here if you're lazy, would rather pay more than have to go bargain hunting for Halloween crap, and feel like walking around the corpse of a failed retail shop..I guess those are my take-aways from shopping here..I dunno. TWO STARS!!

Had such a sad experience today, and am still shaken up…read more This is a longer review, but with respect to the other associate, I want to make sure I'm clear with where the issues originated. We rented some beautiful pieces for our show this month, and Marianne was amazing in getting everything set up and ready for us. When returning most of the items, I made the mistake of returning a shirt to the wrong location, so I had to come back the next week to complete everything. I was ready to pay an extension fee, but she was kind and allowed for that margin. We had a dress and lace-up shirt to bring back as well. My mother dropped off the dress first, and was told sternly by Nancy there would be a $40 damage fee. I wasn't sure what that was for, so when I stopped by to drop off the lace up shirt, I asked. I have a new costume team, so if mistakes were made, I want to make sure they know where they must improve. I have no problem paying the fee- prices here are very fair- but something happened after I asked what the fee was for. Nancy stormed away without speaking a minute, planted at another counter, and then proceeded to tear into me, loud enough for the room full of customers to hear, and potentially even the adjacent room. I think she somehow concluded I was trying to get out of a fee, which upset her. Despite me trying to communicate that wasn't the case, not only did she stop listening but she threw insults. A few of Nancy's choice sentences: "You are so snooty" "Your energy is killing me" "Has anyone ever told you that before? It's true" "You sound so snippy" "Everything you say is so passive aggressive" -I replied I was being genuine, she said, "I don't believe you." "I have been doing this for 40 years so if there's an issue I know it's not me." "Blip blip blip blip" (mimicking me talking and cutting me off for asking where to drop off the final shirt this week) Even if I was trying to negotiate damages, you still shouldn't use public shaming as a tactic. The customer is not always right, but I do believe that standards of mutual respect should be held in all interactions. Marianne was kind, professional, helpful, and honestly made the magic of clothing and performance come alive for me and my cast that came with me. Nancy was hostile, insulting, aggressive, and never even created space for response. I do have the interaction recorded, so all details can be corroborated. I'm not the person to post it (public shaming is not my method) but I'm happy to share the recording with the owners for reflection. I do hope moving forward that a space where artists can create that much magic together can also be a space of safety, gentleness, and mutual respect.
