In fact, I recently discovered the shop itself as they hosted an outdoor vinyl sale, inviting other local vendors and collectors to sell directly outside their shop. It was a fantastic event under any circumstances, but in these days in particular felt like an inspired and ideal way to celebrate and embrace a communal NY spirit. I walked away with a nice mug for myself, a couple of surprise early holidays gifts off my list and, of course, some interesting new and used vinyl. And perhaps more importantly, a great day, and a fine new gift buying go-to!

There are hundreds of different costumes to choose from along with other implements that make ones outfit all the more garish. I'd suggest that any cosplayer worth their salt should be browsing their offerings to see what can enhance whatever outfit they are assembling for the assorted conventions. There are also scores of decorations and I wanted to buy everything but I don't have the space to properly set up a frightful little manor of my own in the NYC apartment. I am guessing they will be wrapping things up or becoming a Spirit Christmas store now that the holiday is over. After all there are now only 45 days until Christmas.....insert insidious laughter or holiday music here......I'm out.

They have a particularly low key good selection of clever and thoughtful kids' gifts in addition to wonderful options for the mature (or immature) adult in your life. I've passed this shop so many times as it's just one shop separating them from Ali's Trinidad Roti Shop (which I'm always at as I love) and don't know how I missed it! Only today when my memory door flew open did I actually realize where I was! 2015, it stands a mere resemblance of its former glory, but somehow amongst the weakness, there's a sense of pride. Almost like your granny on her rocking chair relating stories of her illustrious youth. You'll still find small DJ and entertainer's gadgets such as bolts, screws and many other items I have no clue what they're used for except it's to do with music systems and mics. If you're an Island and Trini music lover, you'll have a ball gazing at albums while listening to sweet Calypso and Parang music (if you ask). A bit of history: Calypso music is an Afro-Caribbean music with origins in West Africa. It's a rhythmic, grassroots (so to speak) music which documents the then and now, socio and political atmosphere of Trinidad and Tobago either with serious undertones or picong (to tease or joke). Calypso or Kaiso procreated with funk and soul and gave birth to Soca music. Parang music is a popular Trinidad and Tobago music which originated from nearby Venezuela. There are shows and competitions but the real deal is when serenaders go to the homes of family and friends paranging at night during the Chistmas season. It is sung in Spanish or patois and is the mother of Soca parang which is a combination of both genres. Hearing a good parang singer live can be a truly emotional experience. Well it is for me and many others. Get a copy of Parang music at Charlie's, ask for Daisy Voisin, maybe you'll get lucky and have this experience. My stop at Charlie's like I said, was like a visit with grandparents. I was emotional, excited and I'll visit again and again but I don't want to live with them. Is that just me? While the children were excitedly showing me items they found, she repeatedly yelled, "I just want some peace and quiet," while covering her ears. She also loudly mocked the song playing in the store, repeating the lyric, "If you ain't got no money, take your broke ass home," in front of us. Her comments and behavior were completely inappropriate, especially around young children who were simply behaving like excited kids in a store. I had every intention of making a purchase, but after witnessing her behavior, I chose not to spend my money there. As we were leaving, I looked in her direction because I was genuinely shocked by how she had acted, and she responded with a rude, "Can I help you?" in a confrontational tone. I have worked with children for years, and I understand they can be energetic. However, they were not being disruptive or disrespectful. Regardless, no customer--especially children--should be treated with such impatience, hostility, or disrespect. This was some of the worst customer service I have experienced. An employee, particularly someone in a management position, should be held to a much higher standard of professionalism. I hope this incident is taken seriously and addressed appropriately, as this behavior reflects very poorly on your business. I will not be returning or recommending this store based on this experience.

I've been to this location many times without any issues but my last visit was rife with problems. I bought an item that was supposed to have been 30% off plus as a premium member I was supposed to get an additional 10% off, so a total of 40% off. I left the store with receipt in hand and double checked the price. I noticed that the deductions were done incorrectly. The item rang up at a higher price than was marked on the item. Also as a premium member I was supposed to get the discount of the additional 10% off of my item. A woman who was working by the wrapping paper area asked if I needed help because she noticed that I just left and re-entered the store. She was the only Saving Grace, of the employees that worked that day because of her attentiveness and genuine kindness. I told her about the incorrect pricing and she told a man who was by the register the issue. I was met by him with disdain and an attitude. He was visibly annoyed that I needed assistance. He couldn't figure out the math in his head, didn't use the register to help him fix the issue, then after a while, went into his wallet, and gave me the money I was owed with an insult about how much it was that he had to give me. He treated me as though I was the problem. I also had an issue with the young woman who originally rang me up because I told her 3 times that I am a premium member and should receive 10% off of my purchase. That particular day premium members would receive a free small notebook as a bonus which were by the registers. She claimed that I was not a premium member, even though I am one. She was extremely dismissive and refused to give me what I was entitled to 10% off and a free small bonus notebook. I just went into a Barnes and Noble today 12/22/2025 and inquired about my membership. They confirmed that I do in fact have an active premium membership until October of 2026.

Street Fever is in one the little shops in the alley of 867 Broadway. When I first walked in to Fever, it reminded me of my bedroom when I was 16. I had covered my bedroom walls with posters, fliers, paintings, dried roses, records basically anything I could stick the walls back then. My mom was obviously not a fan of my teenage decorating style. Street Fever is reminiscent in the sense that they have a ton of stuff. And since, I worked at a thriststore in my teenage years, Fever and I have similar items. I loved that they have fun in the little shop. There's a stuffed Mickey Mouse doll along with vintage Mickey pins. And don't even get me started on PYREX! I am such a huge sucker when it comes to vintage kitchen gear. It's a must. I absolutely go gah gah when I see a 60's print on glassware. One very cool item they have here is old sheets of tattoo flash. Oops! The cat's out of the bag. I kinda wanna keep these all for myself. I love tattoos and I love decorating my home in my style in unique ways. Tattoo flash would be the perfect addition to my home. I will be doing some intense Xmas shopping/birthday and any other fun occasion for that matter here for a unique and fun gifts. And before I forget, they also have a wooden panel of a blue hobo tiger that you can shove your head through and take a picture. Whenever one of these things is around, I undoubtedly take a photo.
