Succulents. Overpriced trinkets displayed in a rustic-looking general store (à la San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Brooklyn). A mid-century modern aesthetic catered toward the modern Instagram success. Yep. Chances are, if you've seen pictures of a dimly lit hipster interior design Instagram account, you've probably seen all there is of a place like Hallesches Haus. It's nothing novel, but if your Instagram bookmarks are full of photos that look just like the restaurant interior, you'll happily eat up everything this place has to offer--food and aesthetic. Right on the canal, Hallesches Haus is a short walk from Hallesches Tor (surprise, surprise). The restaurant has two entrances, so you'll either find yourself stumbling straight into the general store or into the back area, where you'll have to walk past diners and a coat rack to make your way to the counter to order. It's an absolute nightmare finding a place to sit on weekends, as you'll either be constantly bumping elbows with the people sitting next to you or awkwardly hovering above people, hoping that they'll get the memo and hurry up. In other words, ignore what it says on Yelp about Hallesches Haus being "good for groups." (Unless you're a group of at least six, because then you can reserve a table.) Luckily, the prices are fairly reasonable for such a hip place in Kreuzberg. You can get away with breakfast and a coffee for under €10 AND be able to pay with a debit card. Small victories, I suppose, because you'll probably be waiting a while for a table AND your food. The brunch menu changes every weekend, but I've ordered some variation of their French toast every time I've been here. Kudos to the team for experimenting with interesting flavors. One of my personal favorites was the Banoffee French toast, complete with banana, whipped salted caramel (which is to die for), vanilla cream, a butter biscuit hazelnut crumble, topped off with ginger syrup. I found this location through a dutch magazine. It is a bit out if the way, but well worth it if you like heatlhy home made food. What i liked: -Food including cakes proved to be excellent quality. Not such fan of the espresso... But you cant have it all. -laptop area is limited to one corner during lunch. My favorite spot in Berlin so far. Wise and open space, nice and friendly staff. You can sit there for the entire day and don't even notice that the day has gone. Good place to work but it gets super busy and loud during lunch time. Coffee is really good, especially the flat white. Tried slow roasted beer root salad and the vegan raw salad. During a quick solo 2-day trip to Berlin I was craving a cafe to escape from the cold and get some healthy food (a.k.a. vegetables) and Hallesches Haus appeared to fit the bill. The location is down a small alley (there are signs, though) and through their cute store before you come upon a huge cafe. You order at the counter and take the number back to your table before they serve you. I ordered a cappuccino, a slice of their lemon olive oil curd cake, and the Ultra Green bowl. First of all, the Ultra Green bowl does not disappoint if you're looking for your vegetable fix. The shaved brussel sprouts and broccoli added a great crunch combined with the avocado, and the oil-based dressing perfectly complemented the greens with some much-needed acidity. But the real highlight of the meal was the lemon olive oil curd cake which was one of their rotating cake selections for the day, so if you see it there you MUST get it. It was so light yet creamy, with the sugar-coated top adding a nice crunch to each bite. The curd had such a silky consistency and was a nice balance between tart and creamy. I could have had the entire cake but I wouldn't have been able to make it out of this place! Sipping on my cappuccino with this slice of cake was a great way to negate any nutritional value I gained from the Ultra Bowl! On the way out I stopped to look through their gift shop which was a bit out of my price range for the trip but offered plenty of unique knick-knacks that would be great gifts. Do yourself a favor next time you're in Berlin and make sure to stop here! read more

Their vegan sandwich is a must try- filled with beet, tahini sauce, carrots, & spinach. Outdoor seating was my favorite, surrounded by plants and vines making it easy to get work done & fuel up. This cafe is one of the very special kinds. The interior is really pretty and there's also a shop attached, although only open on weekdays if I understood correctly. We had porridge and a vegan salad for brunch. Super delicious and fair prices for the freshness and taste. What we didn't appreciate so much was that they were out of Oranges for freshly pressed orange juice and also that you have to go buy the food at the counter and pay there. Definitely worth a visit when you're in Kreuzberg around Hallesches Tor. Also cool for eating outside! read more

Great space, comfortable communal tables, with lots of natural light, a nice hip, upscale vibe and a nice doggie - Lola, I think. There is a courtyard, that I imagine in better weather is equally nice to have a coffee or a bite. I came for breakfast and had the Bircher Muesli - very good - as well as my coffee. Not a big breakfast menu, but what they had seemed good quality. They seem to allow computer use and have a dedicated table and good wifi. From what I understand, loitering with your laptop is not widely encouraged, but here it seems okay. There is a "general store" upfront filled with interesting and quality, but pricey items - from housewares to clothing to food. Nice vibe. I would go back. read more

Fabulous set up ...walking in by accident while talking about we got to find a barber ...the world got better instantly as there is a barber in the courtyard "al fresco hair n beard care". Way to go. A really beautiful place with high ceilings, great coffee and a creative and fresh lunch and brunch menu. Unfortunantely the quality of food is still a bit inconsistent, the breakfast burrito was a bit blend. Some of the meat of the steak and eggs platter was so chewy, i couldn't cut it with the knife (the knife wasn't super sharp to be fair. But overall it has always been a nice experience there. Service is really friendly. So as soon the food get's a bit more concistent, you get your well deserved 5 stars! read more

I love this place. The store in front feels like a haven for hipsters, especially for light-fixture-lovers and men who have beards. Which means I love lingering in that shop hoping a bearded-light-fixture-loving-man will walk in and sweep me off my feet. But I digress... The breakfast here is DELICIOUS. I have recommended it to many friends and others, especially if you like brioche french toast. Because it is SO GOOD. I'll also do almost anything for maple syrup, and here the only thing I had to do was pay around 8,00. Worth every cent. My friend also had the first breakfast burrito she'd ever eaten, and I'm afraid she'll be disappointed from here on out unless she comes back to Berlin and we go to Hallesches Haus! read more

We stayed near Hallesches Haus while in Berlin. They have a welcoming place with a hipster vibe that reminds me of Austin, TX. The staff was friendly. In the glass case at the counter there is an array of pastry, cake and sandwich options; many of the choices are vegetarian, vegan and gluten free options. Got the salted caramel waffle and, while the waffle was decent, the portion was definitely not worth €9. It's the same size as the ones you get in the frozen food section, so most of the plate was the pickled rhubarb (which sounds cool on the menu, but really doesn't pair well with the other flavors). The coconut yogurt looks like a cheese curd and isn't creamy at all. Given some of the amazing brunch options in Berlin, I'd definitely skip this place. Cool little store though! read more

If you were to imagine the most clichéd, stereotypical, hipster-friendly institution, complete with exposed plaster walls, industrial lighting, combination wood/metal tables, overpriced home decor items, and an antique "distressed" cash register sitting next to the iPad payment system at checkout, you would be imagining Hallesches Haus. That's not to say Hallesches Haus is ugly. It isn't. It's just like you have walked into a magazine ad. Beyond the design, the prices for household items are ludicrously expensive, especially relative to other spots in Berlin. Tiny scented candles for 24€? No thanks. The food, though, seems fairly priced for the quality. Around 5€ for a nice bowl of soup was just right. It's like somebody read a magazine article about how to create the perfect hipster location, visited Brooklyn a few times, and then came back to Berlin and built Hallesches Haus. It's aesthetically pleasing, in a way, but the faux authenticity achieves the opposite effect: there is nothing specific to Berlin here. This store could be in Brooklyn, Copenhagen, Amsterdam -- wherever a sufficient concentration of young people with beards and tattoos can be found. Hallesches Haus isn't terrible, in the same way that H&M chain stores aren't terrible. You know what you're getting before you walk in, you find what you're looking for, and you walk out. You have experienced no unwanted feelings of discomfort, pain, or untidiness. On the other hand, you have experienced nothing new, nothing exciting, nothing inspiring. Hallesches Haus isn't terrible. Great hipster cafe with a hipster shop attached. Menu changes regularly but the day we were there the baked eggs were especially good - the slightly spicy tomato sauce had great flavour. And it was very respectable coffee. Order at the counter then grab a seat in courtyard if the weather is nice. Then pop into the shop for an Edison bulb or groceries in excellent packaging. read more

A hidden treasure in this neighborhood! Huge space, open and creative feeling. Has a wonderful store with hipsterish presents or things for your stylish home, offers free wifi and healthy home made food. Great for visiting English speakers - the staff all seems to speak good English and the menu is bilingual. The food was high quality, the service food, and the decor was nice. Super top place in Kreuzberg: Love the style, the products, the architecture inside, the people working there and the food is awesome!! I had a wonderful homemade burrito breakfast with yummy guacamole and salad. For dessert I took a super delicious creme brûlée. As a French I had in the past lot of really good creme brûlée and this one is definitely in my top 3!!! The place is perfect to chill, eat , buy so nice concept things or even to study in a more stimulating environment than a boring library. Definitely highly advise and one of my favorite place in Berlin!! read more

Great brunch place that is a good reminder of brunch culture back in the states. The interior space is nicely decorated and different parts of the restaurant are designated for working with laptops. The staff is friendly and the menu's range is perfect for any hipster's taste palette. The daily menu offers some experimentation as well. Everything about this place is awesome. Atmosphere is great. Plenty of seating (indoor and out). Amazingly delicious cakes, sandwiches, and granola. One of the only places I found in Berlin with craft beers. Friendly staff. And to top it all off there's an amazing (but small) home goods store that you can peruse after you have your coffee. I wanted to buy everything and bring them back home with me. Seriously, one of the best coffee shops I've been to in the entire world (and I've been to a lot of them). read more

Best french toast of my life :) Even though we ate there in September, I still remember what it tasted like. The coffee was pretty good as well. Well my experiences at the Hallesches Haus were just really inconsistent. It's a beautiful space with a lot going for it and a ton of potential but suffers from a very disorganized and sometimes downright rude vibe. We were staying at a hostel 3 blocks away so we went there every day, sometimes twice a day. Sometimes they heated my sandwich up, sometimes they didn't; it all depended who was helping me. Once they forgot my sandwich entirely and when I asked someone, she just handed me a sandwich that was like rock on the bottom without any sort of apology. Weirdly, it always took the longest amount of time to get my beverage, whether it was just a cold bottle of something or a latte. I get that places hip Berliners frequent probably suffer from the familiar standoffishness that happens in lots of cities. But if you are paying premium prices for your food and surroundings, they should make an effort to be organized and consistent, if nothing else. I do wish them all the best getting it together. read more
