I've been going to this Half Price Books for years. I have purchased and sold books here. Most recently I went in on a Friday afternoon to sell a box of books. It was incredibly crowded and the books being sold kept piling up. I could tell the employees were overwhelmed, but despite their stress they were still kind to me. They didn't make me feel like a burden for adding to their workload and they were honest about how long it would likely take. I ended up waiting in the store for around 2 hours (which is the longest I've ever waited to sell my books). However, the store is huge and there are so many things to look at! I ended up finding a gift for my brother and a birthday card for my mom! And then, when they called me back they offered me around $45 for all my books! If you've ever sold books or clothes to thrift stores or Half Price Books, you know that's a great offer (especially because I only brought in a box). I brought in a lot of popular books in near perfect condition, as well as a few educational reads from a physics class I took in college. All in all, I love Half Price Books! There are always so many awesome books and items to discover on the shelves, especially at this location. If you're looking for your next favorite book, to sell your old books, a copy of something for school, a new board game, a record, or so many things in between, I would highly recommend Half Price Books! read more

This location is a really cool and authentic book store located in Sugarland. These locations are seen around the Huston area- out side "the loop." It brings back memories from the good old days- when you wanted to hit up a book store and find that unique or specifc books. This location is one of the larger stores with records, magazines, DVD's, Movies, Comic books, rare books, hobby, appearel, collectable figures, the list goes on and on. We came out of there with 5 books and spent there about 2 hours. You can just get lost down that robbit hole and benat peace at a book store. This is book worm heaven. LOL! read more

Instant Nostalgia when I came in ! My dad use to take me here as a kid and it looked the exact same. This half price had so many books there was no way to look thru it all but I was glad there was a lot to choose from. There was only one guy I saw working here but he was super nice. This location has lots of popular books for all ages and they are all very affordable and good quality. I've seen the book of the month books as well as Barnes and Nobles most popular books. I haven't sold here though so I won't speak on that. For shopping it's really nice and if you enjoy reading you can easily spend a few hours here looking around. They also have a vinyl section with some current artists at normal price as well as some older ones at cheaper prices. There's also plenty of notebooks, puzzles, and board games to look through. Half Price Books has been a longtime staple in Sugar Land. A lot of my classmates back in high school bought their books from there, and there are many hidden gems you can find if you're a collector of records or other more obscure titles. I've mostly been to sell books and dvds. For the ones they accept, I probably get a dime or less for most. In most cases, they probably sell a book for $5-7 that I received a dime for... but as long as you understand that Half Price does not share much profit with you...it's a nice way to make sure your books have a second life and get some pocket change. Should you want to get more for your books, go to eBay - you'll earn $1-2 on most books after you account for shipping costs. You'll have to hold onto them until they sell (if it sells), then package it meticulously to protect the book, print a shipping label, and then ship it. Should you want to help the community, you can donate the books to Friends of the Library. Donated materials usually go straight to book sales and never end up in circulation (since they already purchased all the books they needed), but the proceeds will support in the library's operations. I really appreciated on my last visit that the associate showed me the stack of books that was worth something (~$9 in total) and gave me the option to effectively donate or take back the other 3/4. I've sold 3-4 bins of books before for $19 a few years ago and I'm guessing most of it didn't have a monetary value. To sell books, head to the back, provide your drivers license for their records and stack your materials on the counter. They'll call for you over the intercom when they're done. While they are scanning the barcodes, you can browse the store or they have a few chairs at the front of the store you can sit at. It's overall an enjoyable experience and the staff are nice. Once pager, collect your offer receipt and get cashed out at the cashier. Overall not really painful experience - just make sure you build enough time in if there's a backlog of books they are doing valuations on. read more

I have to agree with what some of the other reviewers are saying about customer service...it leaves much to be desired. Don't even think about asking about pricing on books that are clearly overpriced, lest you want to receive a "It's just the name of the store, that's all it is. If you have an issue, you can take it up with my manager", like I did. You'd think they'd get some kind of training for what is likely a common question. Makes me think I should open a half-price (insert good) store, buy (insert good) for pennies on the dollar, and sell it for near MSRP, all without training any of my employees on basic people skills. Seems to be working for this place. If you've made it this far, you might be asking why I'm giving three stars. My response would be that this store has played an integral part in helping develop the beginnings of a life long love of reading in my three young daughters. So while I think this store could be so much more with a little basic business management, the utility of the store is not lost on me. read more

My daughter is going through a phase with DogMan books. I called this location on Hwy6 to see if they have any of these books. The guy who answered the phone was super nice, pulled the used books off the shelf and put these on hold for me. We bought all the ones they had...she so excited! These were sold at Target for $12.99 each. At Half Price books these were sold for $4.99 and some were $6.49.... saved a ton of money!!! read more

I am a recently published author. I went into Half Price Books a month ago looking for a book and saw that they host FREE Author's Signings in the store. As a new author and business owner, EVERYTHING is expensive EXCEPT for this because it is FREE. I know you think free equals cheap, poor quality and customer service. YOU WOULD BE WRONG IN THE CASE. Becky, the store manager, and her entire staff delivers quality responsive customer service. I would recommend all authors to go and reserve your space to host your book signing. Good selection of decently priced books. They also have books on tape (cassette and CD). They (like all of the 1/2 price books chain) have used books of all kinds from paperbacks to reference books to coffee table books. They also purchase books. I recently brought about 6 boxes of books here after cleaning out my mother's house. Some of the books were complete sets of time life books from the 80s. I was surprised when we only got $40 for the whole 6 boxes . I know they have to make a profit... but damn! Shop but don't sell here. read more

this place is probably a hit or a miss. was underwhelming. there was a lack of selection in all of the departments. mostly fiction.

I'm a lover of the HPB chain so it is painful to rate the Sugarland HPB location the 1 star they rightfully deserve. It's worth the drive to another location especially if you've never been to a Half Price Books. Please do not let the Sugarland location be your first HPB experience. POSITIVES: the store is fairly organized, the windows are clean, and the parking is free - that's it. NEGATIVES: disgruntled staff, limited selection, and hostile atmosphere. From the floor crew, to the register clerks, information desk, and estimators - this location houses the most negative, indignant staff I've ever been exposed to at a HPB. I left SMH. Must be derivative of a poor management crew, which could be presumptuous of me. Undeniable fact: the behavioral temperature is pretty toxic. I felt like I was a bourdon and totally unwanted. Trade in your books and vinyl somewhere else. They offer horrendously LOW prices for trade-ins and have a limited selection because of it. If you ignore my warning to trade elsewhere, don't make the mistake of bringing an expired driver's license! You'll need more than photo ID even if it's work issued. Come with a birth certificate, social security card, DNA sequencing catalog along with passport, and proof of address like a current water bill otherwise you can "talk to management." Apparently, the $4.50 they'll offer you for your limited edition Nirvana MTV Unplugged and Pink Floyd first pressing albums is a pretty serious monetary exchange and needs to be tracked. Upon checkout, if you have the last of an item that it's visibly damaged and from retail sticker has been on the floor for 8 months or more, most HPB would offer a slight but fair discount - not this location. I watched as the person in front of me checked out with the last mint condition version of the album I was in line to purchase. I was ridiculed for asking the clerk when demonstrating the clear and obvious difference between the two albums. Final note: go somewhere else ... Avoid the toxicity and drive to a neighboring HPB location! read more

This is my go-to bookstore. It's right next to my job, so I come here a lot to chill either after or before work. The staff is pretty cool and laid back. Always willing to help look up a book or order it for you if they don't have it. The only downside is that their collection isn't as expansive as I would like. They often don't have books that I'm looking for, and these books are relatively popular. Other than that, it's a cool bookstore where you can relax and read the day away. I just picked up The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, and I can't wait to dig into it! read more

Sucks that the big HPB in Rice Village closed down, so this is the nearest one to me. Selection is good and everything is organized. But some of the prices dont make sense. It makes you wonder if you can just go to amazon and buy a new copy for a dollar more. The customer service is biased. Depending on who works. Some days these people will flat out ignore you. Hands down my favorite HBP in the Houston area. Fort Bend County is the most diverse county in the nation (facts, look it up if you think I'm a liar)and this HBP reflects that in my opinion. I hate going to some of the HPB's in Houston and finding a terrible selection of books by and about people of color. As a POC, I try hard to find children's books that reflect my culture and images of "us" for my kids and I'm always pleasantly surprised to find an ABUNDANCE of these types of books here. Heck, last weekend I found a bell hooks children's book for my 2 year old! That was pure happiness for me. Like absolute perfection. They always, always, always have what I need. How they accomplish this? I don't know. But I'm going to attribute it to the the diversity in the Ft. Bend area and the awesome people who sell their treasured books to this HPB. Great friendly staff here. Large selection of books - a bit difficult to find the right section sometimes bc it's a pretty large store. Once you've been here a while you know your favorite sections though! :) Check out the back right section with clearance books and just over stock! I was very tempted to buy some books but decided I already have enough books that I need to read! I've sold back books here twice. They need your drivers license and it can take about 15-25 minutes (depending on how busy they are) to give you an offer. It's pretty much a donation though so don't expect much money. This past time, I sold 4 social media business books - valued around $60 (Amazon prices) and only got $3. :( I had already committed to getting rid of them though. Not sure if I'll bother to sell back here. It's a better deal to just buy your books here. read more

Have you ever seen that show Hoarders on A&E? Well I think our family is getting there, and places like these can help! One way to convince your loved ones to get rid of their crap is by telling them it's worth some money. They will fight you tooth and nail to try to keep it, but try to justify and tell them that they don't need high school reading books from 20 years ago, and some poor (cheapskate too) kid in Honors English is going to appreciate them more. I cleared off a couple of bookshelves of all of the old dictionaries and thesauruses, and high school books such as scarlett letter, huck finn, and all of the cliffs notes and trucked them in 2 massive boxes. I go in, and the cashier appraised the books as worth $20 bucks. Hey, that's good enough for me. It's like they are paying me $20 bucks to have more space. One box of reference books is worthless. I can see why, especially when you can look up anything online for more accurate details these days. I'm glad this place was around during high school 10 years ago, and I'm glad they're around for me to dump off my books. read more

This review isn't for the store overall, but for the area where you sell your items. I saw that they have the full collection of Harry Potter films on sell for $69.99 and I need to sell mine. So I left and came back with my move set which is also blueray. The lady said they would give me $3.50 for it. $3.50 for a box set that I bought for $60 and they're selling it for $70. That's such a horrible deal. I told the lady who was also giving me an attitude that they were charging $70 for it so why was I only getting less than 4 dollars for it? I took a picture of the movie and went back to show her and she said "okay" and walked away with more attitude than before. I don't get why there are people who are unprofessional working there. Don't even waste your time selling your things here, you will get 50 cents per book no matter how much you paid for it. You can make more money on EBay or Amazon. It's embarrassing that they wanted to give me less than 4 dollars for something they're selling for $70 or 50 cents for a book that cost $30. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME. More than just books, but mostly books. I've frequented this location more than any other HPB store and I'm always content when I leave. Many hidden gems, if you have the time to look. Decent used/new selection of books, comics, vinyl records, CDs, games and kitsch & niche items galore. Also, they offer cash for all of the aforementioned items above, so start digging in the crates! Throughout the year, they have themed events (i.e., book signings, cosplays, etc.) and the staff has always been super nice and helpful. My one complaint would be the restroom. In the back, they have lower priced items where the restroom is conveniently located. Suffice to say, you may want to hold your breath while perusing. Pros: + Variety. + Location. + Staff. + Books. + More than just books. + Buyback. + Prices. Cons: - Lack of seating space. - Restroom. Overall, I really enjoy coming here. FYI - If you ever need a few extra bucks, see what books you can live without around the house. I had a ton of old college text books around from years ago, but I just moved and really didn't need them just taking up space so I went by Half Price to see what I could get for them. I had no expectations for an offer because the 10 books I decided to bring were at least 10 yrs old and some even older. They offered me $38 which was cool with me since I had no plans to ever use them anyway, and the ones they didn't want I let them keep to sell or donate just so I wouldn't have to lug them back home again. The offer can be used as cash or store credit towards merchandise and there is always something interesting in there! read more

I don't buy books often, but when I do, I buy them from half price books. Seriously, who doesn't like buying things for half price? If books are your friends, then you'll be the most popular kid in school after visiting Half Price Books. I love browsing their large assortment of gently used books, movies, video games, records, CDs, cassettes (yes! cassettes!), and various other products for sale at this location. Since HPB gets a lot of their inventory by buying it from the general population, their assortment of books constantly changes. I went in to Half Price a week or so ago to sell two boxes of paperback books. As I walked up to the buy counter the gentleman working there immediately rolled his eyes and gave a snarky half-smile. The employees working at the buy counter have always been more on the "unpleasant" side when I come to sell books, but this was the worst. I. LOVE. HPB. This place it my guilty pleasure. I love it whenever I find some unexpected treasures here. Like that one band nobody else seems to know, and lo and behold, I find their CD hidden away in the masses of the bins waiting just for me! It's like a treasure trove! How many wonders can one HPB hold? Looking around here you think, "MAN, they've got everything!!!" Anyways, Disney songs aside, I've picked up wrote a few Disney movies in pretty good condition. For a great price too! $14 for a Disney movie? Pick up a few more and you've got a marathon on hand! And don't get me started on the books. While they don't actually have everything, they've still got quite the selection. And the staff is super nice and friendly and absolutely willing to help you find what you are coveting the most.
