I'm glad to report that Jerusalem Food Imports (JFI) falls in the latter category. Hungry for Mediterranean food and having tried all the other local destinations, I gave JFI a try. Boy, am I glad I did. JFI is a specialty market with a kitchen on the left side with a full takeout menu. No space for seating, but I'm working from home, so I was just doing a buy and fly anyway. I was in a chicken shwarma mood, so I ordered one. If you can't tell by the picture, it is monstrous. It looked like they used about a pound of chicken when preparing it. Add in a side of fries (which I didn't know came with it and really didn't want) for $5.99, and you have enough for two meals unless you're extremely hungry. Ate half and saving the other for dinner. It's much tastier than comparable sandwiches (specifically Ghossain's), with the requisite picked veggies and tahini sauce. They also had a complete selection of meat pies, chicken pies and spinach pies. I picked up a spinach pie for $1.99 for later. I also picked up a pint sized tabbouleh for $5.99, where competitors charge $4.99 for 8 ounces. I did try some of it and it's very tasty and fresh. I look forward to trying some kibbeh and hummus next time. K'nafa practically next door is good too. But if you're looking for a lot of food at a tremendous value, give JFI a try. The gentlemen working there couldn't have been nicer, and even offered to include some water without asking. I hope to get the word out on this hidden gem. Give them a try if you like Mediterranean food.

The door is wonky though...super heavy and opens weird. They have a lot of different options and premade bowls. For someone who is not very familiar with Indian food, this place makes it easy to customize and try out stuff. Nothing was too spicy or too overspiced, thankfully. Everything tasted relatively fresh but the portions are too small for the price. It's not like at Chipotle or Cilantro where they fill up your bowl. I almost never finish my portion in one sitting but I had no problem doing so here. I wish there were more veggie toppings and not just pickled ones. Scallions and cilantro would be great options to have. The mango lassi was delicious but so small. The inside is high ceilinged, spacious and has plenty of seating. The big group bench in the middle had such heavy and had awkward block seats. They were hard to get in and out of and were so uncomfortable.

Everyone loved the food and the flavors were so satisfying. The real tandoors behind the see-through glass were eye catching. Being able to see my food being cooked was very satisfying. The servers were very sweet, made great recommendations and were very patient with my very chaotic family. My only issue with this place is the unisex restrooms. Men absolutely mess up the restrooms and women bear the brunt of it. Petition to go back to restrooms specific to the sexes.

Ordered the vegetarian platter, butter chicken, garlic naan, tandoori chicken and onion chutney. The butter chicken was very good, you could definitely taste the butter and spices; chicken was well prepared and the rice was good. Garlic Naan was delightful! Covered with garlic, butter and spiced and was cooked to perfection! Onion chutney is one of my favorite Indian sides. This onion chutney did not disappoint! Very well flavored, a bit of spice but very well balanced. I only rated it four stars because the vegetable platter was quite disappointing. Every item was overcooked, dripping in grease and stale. Again, this was our first time ordering, so I cannot speak to the average experience, but I did not enjoy it at all. I was also surprised that it did not come with any sides to dip. Overall, I was happy with the quality of food, minus the vegetable platter and would definitely consider going back for the butter chicken, naan and onion chutney. Service was also good, we were greeted and got our food immediately.

It was more like a quesadilla a naanadilla if you will but dipped in some curry it was tasty. They also served some for lack of a better word, big chip, with some chutney dipping sauces and I really liked that as well. The ras malai was creamy with a little funk which I personally loved. Would try this place again.
