I've taken classes, I have relatives who are talented artists, I've met several artists in my life. Anyway...Flor de Barro offers classes to the community. They start at around $35 and up. They invite the public to have mimosas on Sunday afternoons. They also have other events for anyone whose interested. For example, their Dia de los Muertos altar/art was great. I enjoyed seeing it very much. They even gave out hot cocoa and pan de muerto to visitors. Follow them on social media and/or check out their website for more info. You can also subscribe to their email blasts. The main thing Flor de Barro is known for is their hand crafted pottery from Mata Ortiz. Mata Ortiz is a small village in Chihuahua, Mexico. It's a 4.5 hour drive from El Paso. Some of the art is pricey but beautiful to look at. However, smaller pieces are really affordable. I saw a tiny pot I really love for $6. I'll most likely go back and get it. There are some larger pieces that cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars. The staff is always friendly and hospitable. I like that they don't pressure anyone into buying the art. They let you look around and take photos freely. They're all about building genuine relationships with those who visit. Flor de Barro seems to update their inventory often. I saw a beautiful nativity scene that wasn't there a month ago. Those who aren't in El Paso can also shop online via their website. Several, if not all of these pieces, would make fine gifts. I highly recommend visiting Flor de Barro, whether you plan on buying something or not. We're supposed to learn something new everyday. They helped us choose great frames for the paintings and we put down a small deposit. They turned around and quickly got the job done before my brother's birthday in less than a week! Upon my return to pick up the frames, the owner (Doug I believe? I'm sorry if that's incorrect!) told me that he was sorry for our loss and that the rest of the payment was on the house. I was so taken back at that incredibly kind and sincere gesture, I truly can't thank you all enough for the blessing you provided in that time. Art Masters not only cares about their work but their customers as well. I will be back to frame other prints to support this amazing business!!! Once again, thank you SO much. I took a free walking tour with Marcos, who helped create and has been leading the Last Thursday art tours for the last several years. The tour started at 6:30 from the central plaza/park in town, and we wandered around town for a good 2 hours or so. We got to see a bunch of cool art (I bought some neat stickers!), some music, and there were opportunities to buy food. My favorite part was learning about the interesting history and architecture of El Paso. I'm not an architecture buff, but those who are will probably be familiar with architect Henry Trost. He has a ton of neat buildings in El Paso, all very close together. I learned cool facts and trivia about El Paso on the tour that my friend who has lived there for 6 or 7 years doesn't even know! I highly recommend taking Marcos's Last Thursday tour!
