Parking was difficult and I had to download an app to pay for parking, which takes time ( you have to set up a username / password, link credit card etc) so I was five minutes late getting there so just allow extra time. Our guide took us to a combination of places we'd been and places that were new to us. It was nice getting the background on the chef's at all the restaurants. In fact, we liked the new to us restaurants so much, we returned a few days later for dinner at one. The minbus was very comfortable and the other participants were all friendly and nice. The only little disappointment was our last stop. Havana offered a great selection of their classic dishes, but they were cold when we arrived. If they change the restaurants, we would do this tour again.

We took the "Historic West Palm Beach Neighborhood Food Tour" which was fantastic and highly recommended. It was a great way to learn about the historic area just south of West Palm Beach and be introduced to some great restaurants. We met at Casa Grandview Inn, a historic inn that is beautifully designed and was able to see much of this very private place. For me this alone was worth going on the tour, so I was already ahead of the game! Just look at some of the amazing photos of the Inn I'm posting. After learning about the Inn, we boarded a luxury Mercedes mini-bus and headed out to visit and taste some special food spots in the nearby neighborhood. Perfect for visitors to the Palm Beach area as well as locals, who I guarantee will learn so much, and have a lot of fun as well. On our way to the marina, there was a serious car accident just ahead of us that shut down the entire highway. We were delayed nearly 90 minutes from our original departure time as a result! He was totally flexible, warned his next passengers so they too weren't sitting in the traffic mess and avoided a domino effect of overlapping launches. We were a party of 7, including two teens with autism. It could not have gone better. We had gorgeous weather. The boys absolutely loved going fast on the airboat and laughed so hard whenever we rolled right through/over reeds and floating vegetation in the backwaters. We were given sound dampening headphones for our ride, which were cleaned between passengers. We felt very safe and comfortable during the ride. We didn't see the treehouse on our trip, and some of the older/larger alligators were being camera shy. But we had a fantastic experience and saw turtles, rabbits, baby and teen alligators, one momma alligator, and a great array of birds, herons, etc. Highly recommend Captain Steve and Master Gators!! It's a must-try when you're in the area.

I have always wanted to take the Moonlight Cemetery Tour hosted by the City of West Palm Beach…read moreHistoric Preservation Program and Parks and Recreation Division. I finally got the chance on the Friday night before Halloween. Parking is available on the street and in the Norton Museum lot next to the cemetery for $6. The tour is given In Woodlawn Cemetery on Dixie Hwy. in West Palm Beach. Woodlawn was created in 1904 when Henry Flagler purchased 17 acres of a pineapple grove for burial grounds. The cemetery was very beautiful with trees and landscaping and it actually became a tourist attraction for the society ladies of the day. Henry Flagler actually intended to be buried here in the center circle but changed his mind when two associates attempted to incorporate Palm Beach behind his back so he instead chose to be buried in St. Augustine. In 1914 the cemetery was deeded to the city. Two more acres were purchased by the city in 1975 for the creation of the Woodlawn North Cemetery. This is the area where you will find the more recent burials. The entrance to the cemetery used to have an iron gate with the inscription "That which is so universal as death must be a blessing." When Dixie Hwy was widened the gate was lost and it was replaced with a cement arch that bears the quote although no one has been able to determine where it came from. Woodlawn is the final resting place of some of the pioneers of Palm Beach whose stories you get to hear on the tour as well as a mass burial site for the 96 victims of the 1928 Okeechobee Hurricane. Over 10,000 people are buried here. The cemetery is actually made up of three cemeteries, Woodlawn Cemetery, the Jewish Cemetery, and Woodlawn Cemetery North. It is thought the name for the cemetery was taken from the famous Woodlawn Cemetery in New York. The Norton Museum of Art across the street used to be a 200 grave cemetery. The bodies were supposed to be moved across the street to Woodlawn but not everyone made the trip before the museum was built. Some of the notable burials at this cemetery include Charlie W. Pierce who was a barefoot mailman and the first postmaster of Boynton Beach, Charles Edward Merrill founder of Merill Lynch, and Joe Sakai who was one of the Japanese pineapple farmers in the colony that became Boca Raton. One of the sadder stories involved little Our Louise who was murdered by her mother's boarder. One of the more famous stories was about a gravesite for a couple whose bodies are not even buried here. Judge Chillingworth and his wife Marjorie. The last time the couple were seen alive was at a dinner party on the evening of June 14, 1955. The next day the couple were supposed to meet with a carpenter to build a playground for their grandchildren but they never showed up for the meeting. Inside the house there were bloodstains on the stairs. The police believed the Chillingworth's were kidnapped but the case went cold for 5 years. The mystery began to unravel in 1959 when the people involved began talking. Eventually it was learned that Floyd Holzapfel, a West Palm Beach garage attendant and a pool room operator named Bobby Lincoln murdered the couple in a plan masterminded by corrupt Municipal Judge Joseph A. Peel. Holzapfel eventually confessed the plot. Peel had been accepting bribes and offering protection to criminals. When Judge Chillingworth found out he started making plans to have Peel disbarred. To prevent that from happening Peel orchestrated the Chillingworth's murder. They couple were thrown off a boat in the ocean while professing their love to each other and their bodies were never found. The grand finale story was about Lena Clarke, the first woman postmaster of Palm Beach. After her brother's death by a snake bite Lena's grief stricken mind unraveled and she stole a significant amount of money through her job. She tried to make her older married lover take the blame and when he refused she murdered him. During her trial she became a national celebrity. Tickets for the monthly cemetery tour are available for free in Eventbrite October through April. Our hosts were Janet DeVries and Ginger Pederson who are Palm Beach historians and authors of several books about local history. The tour started at 7:30 and finished at 9:15. Be prepared to walk the entire time and bring a flashlight. The ground is uneven in places so wear comfortable shoes. As a a fan of history I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about West Palm Beach from these knowledgeable and entertaining ladies. I saw the graves of some people whose stories I knew and I learned some new stories as well. Although the event is free they do collect donations at the end of tour for the upkeep of the cemetery. There is also an upcoming day of service where volunteers will be cleaning the cemetery. If you enjoy history as much as I do, I highly recommend this tour.

As a local, there are so many places we want to try that it's impossible to hit them all. This was a great way to try a bunch of really great local places in one afternoon. We went to El Camino, Delray goodies, Beer Trade Co, popcorn house, death by pizza and Dekes. Everything we ate was so delicious! The knowledge Julie had of restaurants and how they source their ingredients is vast. She was wonderful, sociable and a great tour guide! Highly recommend for locals and tourist alike!

Our group met up with our tour guide Anthony at El Camino in Pineapple Grove. We were given a short introduction and sat down to our first tasting starting with Margaritas, Home Made Chips with Red and Green Salsa and Brisket Quesadillas. What a great way to start the fun. Next stop was a real surprise, an Asian Street Food location off the beaten path called Goodies. We sampled a delicious fruit tea and a new item to me JianBing, an Asian chicken burrito with a crunch which made the taste and texture exceptional. We actually watched the chef create this on a crepe maker! (see video) This is a great affordable lunch stop in Delray! Next stop, Beer Trade company very conveniently located next door to Goodies. Everyone was offered a beer of their choice from a HUGE selection in the cold case and on tap. It all started in Maryland so Old Bay was a great addition to their Honey Old Bay wings recipe marinated in what else BEER. They were crispy and sweet with quite a kick! We also sampled the risotto balls - yummy! We walked a few blocks to stop #4 Death by Pizza! The owner Koby greeted us and gave us some background of this Detroit style pizza company which has become a very popular location two blocks off Atlantic. What a treat! This business is take-out only so we stood outside and sampled a square thick crispy crust slice topped with amazing cheese and tomato sauce known as The Enemy! I can see why..i gained a pound in the sampling but boy was it worth it!! Sadly one last stop, (i was FULL but having way too much fun) @ Dekes Coffee. Nico, a young visionary, gave us a full explanation of the coffee making process as we sampled an affogato, espresso shot over a scoop of vanilla ice cream. If you like strong unsweetened coffee, this is your coffee shop. From coffee plant to green coffee beans to the roasting process, we saw it all. Unfortunately, I don't remember where the coffee beans originated in our espresso affogato, however Nico spoke of Ethiopian coffee as one they serve often. I would highly recommend this tour as a chance to sample some great independent restaurants in Delray. Our group seemed to be most impressed with the gems we found off the beaten path.
