I took my daughter and son here to get their hair cut for school. When we first pulled in and…read moreparked Yolanda calls me and tells me she will be late which was not a problem with me, when she arrives she had a friend with her and we follow her to her salon door. As we are walking in my children and I are stepping over kids toys, clumps of hair, other debris and flies and their was a smell of marijuana in the air. My son even commented on the flies as he is afraid of bugs. The first thing I noticed was that it was dirty at the time I didn't judge but when she goes to tell my daughter to get in the chair she notices that it's dirty and has previous cut hair all over it and not just little bits but big curly pieces. Her and her friend begin to swipe the hair off, sweep up the hair, spray the chair down and clean it off. I should have known then to just walk out but I was trying to give grace. After she began to chop off pieces of my daughters hair she starts complaining about a supposed cowlick in my daughters hair that she doesn't have I noticed that something was off with both Yolanda and her friend. She asked me three times to see the photo of how I wanted my daughters hair to be trimmed and shaped up, there were a few times she was telling me something but I couldn't understand her as she made absolutely no sense. She even got flabbergasted with me at one point because I was not understanding her and she just tells me "ugh! Don't worry about it. Trust me it will look good I won't have your kids out here looking like dennis the menace." At this point I was stunned and shocked at what I was witnessing. I have an anxiety disorder and I just froze up. I never should have let this woman touch my children's hair especially because she was high and her salon was so filthy. At this time I took a moment to really look at my surroundings, there is dust all over the place, hair and grime on every surface, toys everywhere which can cause a hazard as there were so many by the door and the small open space between the register desk and chairs, she has two hair drying chairs with filth all over the surface of it, there was matted and tangled up wigs all over the place including on the floor and the bottom shelf of a bookshelf. I was filled with so much shame and embarrassment for my children. Before she was done she slathered on some type of hair cream on my kids hair and flattened their hair with it. I paid full price even though they were supposed to be half off according to a flyer she has posted on her Facebook and I gave her a $10 tip. I just wanted to leave. When I got home with my children they both got showers and a good shampooing because there was so much hair cream on their hair. We let their hair dry and that's when I got a good look at their hair. It was horrible, absolutely terrible. I contacted her through text and sent her photos of how she left my kids. She responded by lying, gaslighting, blaming me and even accusing me of discriminating against her as I am a caucasian woman and she is a person of color. The only thing I wanted was a refund on the hair cuts and told her to keep the tip. She refuses and insists that she did no wrong. She is extremely unprofessional and nasty. Her behavior towards me for contacting her about her work was something I was unprepared for. I am even more shocked at how she decided to treat me. She has stated several times that she has a camera in her salon and I have asked her four times to please provide me with the full video of the time we were in her salon, from the moment we walk in to the moment we leave but she has refused even though she continues to say that she has video and I'm lying about my experience at her salon and the results she left my children's hair. She has even insinuated that I took my kids to someone else and that they did this to their hair after her, which is crazy and not true. Yolanda has done everything but take accountability for this situation. She is by no means a professional and should not be touching anyone's hair much less own a salon.

Elements is a small spa and salon on route 26--a little ways past the school and courthouse. At…read morefirst it may look like another hair dresser inside a Victorian house (there are several in Lowville) but I think this place is really something special. The owner has done a really nice job trying to make this place sophisticated and special. The first time I went here in 2009 after it first opened, she told me she was renovating the place one area at a time as she can afford it. The first time I visited there was a waiting lounge, mani/pedi room, a tanning room, salon area, massage room and facial room. When I visited this summer there is a new space for the tanning bed and a separate room for the check in/payment counter. There's also a chiropractor working in the front room where the tanning bed used to be. I know its just going to get better as the years go by. One of my favorite parts about this spa is that my family's hair-dresser-Lori now works here. My family (including my dad) have been going to her for at least 15 years now, back when she worked at another salon in town. If you haven't looked by now--look to the left--I live in Manchester, CT. My parents live at Chase Lake 3-4 months out of the year so I schedule my hair appointments around visiting during the warmer months. Getting our hair done here is just more affordable than anything back home. And its nice to work with regular people, not the "hair snobs" I've dealt with at home before. I also just really like the waiting room. There's something about that long fluffy brown carpet...its not the most beautiful thing in the world but its really soft and comfortable, lol. Its a comfy and inviting room.

jToday I had an appointment with Thomas at James Brett in their Princess St. location, and had a…read morevery bad experience. I originally went to this location for the first time, in December 2020 to have my roots highlighted. I was advised to wait a couple of months for my roots to grow out further before doing any root highlights, and this was noted on my file. This was good and sensible advice from the very pleasant Kaydian (if I recall her name correctly). I was rebooked for March 4, 2021 with another stylist, who upon my arrival said she was uncomfortable doing the work because she said my hair was severely damaged. She recommended hair treatments and a hair cut, and to re-book in the future. I purchased the recommended Aveda hair products from their salon, and used them for months. Aveda makes great products that I have been using for years. I made another appointment to have my roots highlighted on July 7, 2021. I arrived to be told by Thomas that he couldn't work on my hair because it was very damaged. This is my third time in their Salon since moving to Kingston. All this information was on my file at this Salon, and yet on two subsequent occasions the stylists were uncomfortable working with my hair. I tried to politely explain that all this time-wasting could have been avoided had they merely given me a simple call to discuss the condition of my hair and their reluctance to work on it, before they confirmed a third appointment. By this time, three people (Thomas, the stylist from March, and then also James -- perhaps the owner?), kept telling me repeatedly that my hair was damaged. Since the beginning of the conversation, I kept saying that I completely understood the issue, that they believe my hair is too damaged to work on. So, I tried to give some friendly advice that next time, they should tell customers that they only work on healthy highlighted hair, thereby saving everyone's time and effort. James interrupted me and said to me that there won't be a next time. I find that to be a very arrogant and rude statement to make to a customer, making me feel I wasn't welcome back -- (even though I wasn't thinking of returning after these circumstances). So why did I keep returning? Because I took their advice to re-book after waiting, and then doing their suggested treatments I am very disappointed with my overall experience at this Salon, considering the excellent years of experience that they describe on their website. I believe that we all should be treated with equality and respect, regardless of race, gender, social status, etc. Be humble and helpful. "Being humble means recognizing that we are not on earth to see how important we can become, but to see how much difference we can make in the lives of others" -- Gordon B. Hinkley
