If I hadn't done my research, we would have missed this market entirely. As it turned out, it was really close to our hotel, and we didn't have to hop a Zug to access it.
The thing that drew us to this market wasn't just the proximity to our lodgings. It was the promise of different varieties of glühwein. That, and we were starting to get peckish, and figured we could find some good and cheap eats at the market.
We walked from our hotel to the place that Google Maps told us would be our destination. My husband was skeptical - it was about a 10-minute walk - but once we saw the lights, it was perfection.
The market was surprisingly crowded, but we didn't have a problem navigating the sea of people. Our first stop was the glühwein vendor, of course. We both went with a mug of the kirsche glühwein, or cherry-flavored mulled wine. And it was delightful! (Bonus fun fact, this stall has a wire spanning from their roof to the tree across the way. Santa rides a bike along the wire, back and forth between the tree and the stall. You'll know you're in for a glühwein treat when you spot the Santa!)
This isn't the biggest market in town, but it did feel cozy and comfortable. With our mugs of piping hot kirsche glühwein in hand, we wandered the aisles to suss out their food offerings. We eventually settled on an indecently long sausage to share, which we washed down with a couple small mugs of beer.
More wandering of the aisles, more food contemplating. We did buy a bag of nüsse to share as we walked through the aisle and stopped to browse the stalls.
We didn't buy anything this go-round; well, we did walk away with a couple of the mugs, but we didn't buy any of the crafts that I'd been eyeballing. We were there mostly for the food and drink, and for the festive atmosphere. read more
