They became an outlet for women to get out of the house and to assert their independence by allowing them to get involved in politics during a time when they were expected to be homemakers. Women's clubs helped to launch the women's rights movement. The Lake Wales Woman's Club began as a thimble party thrown by pioneer Nellie Stewart at Hotel Wales on May 25,, 1914. Seventeen ladies attended and as they sewed they decided to begin meeting every two weeks at different peoples houses, They collected dollar donations which they gave to the orphans home in Jacksonville. Over the next six years the ladies continued to meet under different names until they finally became the Federated Woman's Club of Lake Wales. In 1920 the club established the first town library. Between 1921 and 1926 they were responsible for maintaining all of the parks in the city. They were able to donate 200 books to the high school so it did not lose its accreditation. In the 1940's the club supported the war effort with a sewing and knitting program and they founded the Lake Wales Little Theatre. In the 1950's they hosted the Evangelical Lutheran Church in their clubhouse until they could move into their own building. The 1960's saw continued support of the library as well as health and cancer research support. In the ensuing years the club continued to participate in many school, health and community needs programs. Today two dozen women members of the club continue to positively impact the community. I visited the club when they were a stop on the 39 Mile Scenic Highway Yard Sale. They still meet in their historic clubhouse and auditorium adjacent to the Lake Wales Public Library. They maintain the building which is used for community events and is available to rent for receptions. They also present scholarships to Lake Wales high school seniors, they partner with the Memory Unit at Water's Edge for arts and crafts activities with residents, and conduct food drives for family Thanksgiving dinners and people in need. They participate in the following annual events: Olmsted Day in the Park, Pioneer Days, and Make It Magical, where they help kids decorate free cookies. Popular food events they host include a Dickens Christmas with costumed characters and an English-style pub feast and Christmas dessert presentation, an annual International Dinner with menu samples from multiple nations and twice a year spaghetti dinners. Most recently they hosted a plant and garden sale this past October. Over the past 100 years, over 4,000 people and groups have benefited from the work and service of the Lake Wales Woman's Club.

This…read moreincredible resort does everything imaginable to give wish kids facing life threatening medical issues and their families the best week of their lives, all at no cost to the families. We were guests here with two of my daughter in 2012 and 2015, and we've been back as volunteers over the past four years. I have only wonderful things to say about this wonderful resort. Founded by Holocaust survivor Henri Landwirth, GKTW is celebrating their 40th birthday. They've hosted over 200,000 wish families, and each wish child has their own gold star on the ceiling of the Castle of Miracles. Each family gets to stay in a two bedroom villa for the week, and all of their meals are provided in Cafe Clayton - the on property restaurant. There is also an ice cream parlor that opens each day at 7:30AM and families are highly encouraged to eat ice cream for breakfast at least once during their stay. In addition, Noah's Nook provides poolside snacks such as nachos, popcorn, chips, and iceys; and you can also get pizza deliveries right to your villa from Miss Merry's Pizzeria. There is so much to do at GKTW! The pool is amazing and is handicap accessible. Actually, absolutely everything at GKTW is fully accessible! There is also a life-sized Candyland Game playground, a beautiful carousel, and two other amusement park rides on site. In Amberville, there are arcade games and the biggest model railroad system I've ever seen. Families can also go fishing, participate in the evening parties, and do STEM activities in the Wonderlab. They can play on the dinosaur themed mini golf course, and get their hair and nails done at the Rockin' Spa. Best of all is the amazingly friendly and welcoming atmosphere at GKTW. The village looks like a fairytale world with brightly colored buildings, whimsical characters, and Mayor Clayton, a well dressed village who "runs the village". The village is spotlessley clean and very well maintained. Each week, volunteers happily fill over 1800 shifts doing everything from scooping ice cream, to serving meals, to power washing, to helping at parties, to running the carousel to help families have the week of their lives. All of the volunteers are so friendly and really go the extra mile to be kind to the wish children and their families. We've been volunteering during our spring school vacation week for the past four years, and it is the BEST! We look forward to it for the whole year and pack as many volunteer shifts into our week as possible, because being at GKTW and helping these incredible families is so rewarding and also fun. I highly recommend GKTW to families whose child qualifies for a wish due to tough medical circumstances, or anyone who would like to help out by volunteering. GKTW truly is the BEST place in the world!
