Great selection and excellent service. If you're restoring a home, you should stop in.

Finally had an occasion to use their locksmith services, and they did a great job. I brought in my rim lock looking to replace it so that I could get one that comes with a key, plus possibly a new doorknob because mine was a bit rickety. They said they could make me a key for my current lock for only 20 dollars, and they offered to clean up the lock as well. As far as the knob, the new ones are all super pricey, so they cleaned mine and added newer and more stable screws. I ended up paying 10 bucks more than the quoted price, but I'm really happy with the work. The lock looks brand new despite being made in 1871, and the key is simply perfect. My childhood dream of carrying a fully functional skeleton key on my everyday key ring is now fulfilled. read more

Local, responsive, kind, and affordable. These guys are awesome, and I cannot recommend enough. They know how to work with old houses, too! Super communicative and flexible, and were patient enough to wait for us when we were running late. Barry and team, thanks again!!! read more

I called out H. Rault for my mom's armoire. We've used them in the past, and they've always been excellent. You can tell they've got a ton of experience. In this case, my mom was in the middle of moving, and one of the packers had locked a large armoire she used as an entertainment center. So, sad but true, this thing hadn't been locked in years and the lock jammed. I didn't get the name, but my mom says the locksmith sent out quickly fixed the issue and even gave a trick if it gets stuck again. Real lifesavers at a tough time. Highly recommended. read more

What a cool old-school business! I needed a special key made. I had been to every hardware store in town trying to get the key made, but no one had the key. One locksmith I called said they could make the key for me for $250.00. Finally, I went to H Rault! He didn't have the key in stock but told me what key to order and said he would make the copies for me once I received the keys. I ordered the keys - they were $10.00 for 10 keys. He made the copies for me and didn't charge me! You don't get that kind of service anymore. Highly recommend! read more

Shocked I haven't written a review here previously. I've been shopping here for years for everything from household items to gifts and spare keys to key chains. They have a wide variety of product in the store. Personally I've bought jewelry, signs, spare keys, and key chains most often. Always happy with my purchases, and always receive great service at the front counter no matter who's there. If you're looking for gifts, they have signs, jewelry, and a ton of old keys / locks / door knobs / hinges for individual purchase from $.50 to $200+. Wide range of selection and prices, so I do wander in here when gift shopping because you never know what unique gift item you'll find. If you need practical items they have plenty of options for any current key or door situation you run into. Lots of keychains, spare keys, and of course key making service at the front counter. They keys I've had cut here always work, and I love that I can grab a key chain right there - all really quick and good quality. Need a new lock and knob? Or replacement parts for an antique door knob? They have all of the above as well. I've personally never used them for this service, but from the large selection it looks like have a ton of options with a special portion at the back of the store with catalogues for custom orders. read more

The highest quality licksmithing I've encountered anywhere. For the old locks we have in our 300 year old city, they're the only game in town. Their store resembles a lock museum. I know from talking to a manager there that their younger staff has been getting training in the new electronic locks. Key copying works where most others fail. Highly recommend visiting or employing Rault! read more

Such a unique shop! They have a huge array of keys, doorknobs, and decorative drawer pulls, among other unique and interesting items. I'm in between houses right now and don't have space for things but there were so many cool decor pieces here that I was interested in. Highly recommend! read more

We quite literally stumbled upon this place, and thank god we did! It's been around for a couple hundred years, and by the curmudgeons guarding the register inside, you can tell. Not a very friendly young man I found inside, even after I paid him for the stuff I touched and liked enough to buy. That man's demeanor aside, this place is the epitome of eclectic! They have everything you could ever need for locks, doors, metal, and knickknacks to boot! We had been looking for some uncommon drawer knobs to use on our handmade walnut coat rack we had just finished, and after many months found them here for a song! I think I paid two dollars and seventy five for 10 knobs I found in a shoebox clearance tub somewhere in the back of the store. It was great, and the project was a huge success. Even better, on those cold Kansas nights when I walk in and hang my coat up, a hot flash of NOLA splashes across the consciousness of my presently frigid reality - if only for a second, and H Rault's sourcing of the peculiar made that experience ever-present. They have a lot of stuff, and their store is deep, down on magazine street. I'd definitely stop in for a jaunt, or to acquire the unordinary. They have so many different and wonderful options, this place belongs in NOLA, sapping forth the strange from without that heavy New Orlean's ethereal, coalescing it for any passer by to casually peruse. I don't think it could exist anywhere else, and that's what makes it special. read more

10 10 10 10 10 across the board!!! I called yesterday to set up an appointment & much to my surprise, today they not only came out & fixed the problem, it only took them 20 minutes or so to replace the lock. Ravi & Thor were professional, clearly knew what they were doing & were so nice. I ALMOST wish I would have another problem just so I could have them come out again. ( I said ALMOST ) If you ever need a locksmith, PLEASE call this company!! read more

Locksmith? Why would I ever go to a locksmith while traveling? Shh....don't tell anybody that they have a killer store with tons of vintage items. I heard about them from a friend who shopped for some lock jewelry her last trip to NOLA. The jewelry selection is completely fun unfortunately they typically can't size it. The rest of the store has tons of cute goodies like signs, etc. Make a trip of it and shop Magazine street. There are great stores and restaurants within a couple block radius. read more

After literally years of trying to get this one particular task done, i've finally found competent locksmiths in New Orleans. It's not hard to get a good rating out of me, just do good business. This place is no quips, no qualms, they don't give you a hundred and one reasons why they can't cut your key, and they do it all at, like, pre-2000 prices! I couldn't believe how cheap it was! Maybe i'm just used to everything these days becoming more and more expensive to achieve. I mean, crap on the .99 cent menus aren't even .99 cents! Not to mention, the store itself is beautiful. Filled with lots of old locks and keys, pendants and things, it's a place you can spend quite some time roaming and gazing about. I also like the fact that they cut keys the real way over here. Opposed to home depot where they just stick the key in a machine and it does all the cutting for you. I mean, i guess that's cool but screw that, i like the manual way on this one. I would definitely go out of my way to get here for anything locksmith related. Pleasant customer service and equally as pleasant aesthetics to the place to enjoy while you have your key(s) cut. Stop by and check em' out. Thanks again, great job! read more

This is the go-to locksmith for mechanical locks in New Orleans. The abundance of old and historic homes has presented an opportunity for developing expertise that Rault's has embraced. Onsite or visits are prompt, "yes we can!" and good value as well. It's my understanding that they are adapting to he emerging electronic lock technologies as well. Their store is essentially a museum of locks. The service I've had and seen has been competent and patient. read more

I have been working with H Rault for a while now. My contractor suggested we try them out. They have some fantastic inventory. Some of the stuff is re-purposed door hardware. They also have lots of new stuff like Emtek or companies that specialize in reproductions. The fun stuff is the old stuff IMHO. Sadly, I think door hardware is cool. I learned a lot working with H. Rault. For a bunch of doors, we purchased these old mortise locks. It was a set of nine. They were great looking and function pretty well. We had to have some skeleton keys made to operate the locks. Some people may think that's kind of a hassle, the skeleton keys, but I thought it was kind of cool. Rob at H. Rault was able to make the keys no problem. Then we ordered some reproduction stuff along with a few Emtek deadbolts. The order took a while to come in, which was annoying. This was not Rault's fault, but still, HR is kind of responsible for their vendors and one of the vendors dropped the ball which resulted in a delay. I don't just mean a few days, it was a like 4 or 5 weeks. I've dealt almost exclusively with young Rob, and I don't think I would try using anyone else. He is extremely knowledgeable and can steer you in the right direction. It should also be noted, that young Rob gave me some free slide bolts for that mix up with the order. That was a nice move. I would definitely use these guys again. Make sure you ask for young Rob. read more

Funny and useful - great shop. Everyone is New Orleans helpful! The only company for our locks!

A-mazing multi-generational shop, first opened in mid 1800s. Old-school locksmith and key maker, the entrance and front part of shop is part museum and hip design gift store while the back is showroom and vintage store. They make the claim as the second oldest locksmith in the United States. Bring in your antique non-functional door locks and the family will meticulously return them to use, including cutting a new skeleton key! read more

The last time the locksmith came to my house? I hugged him. That's how much I love their service. My house is old; they are doing beaucoup construction work in my neighborhood causing my house to shift on it's foundations. Locks don't like shifting foundations, so sometimes they spaz out. Or you discover that there's a button lock on the front door that gets accidentally pushed and how do you get OUT?! So I just call up the office and someone comes out usually with 24 hours (weekdays). I have had a variety of locksmiths come out but my favorite is the older man because he reminds me of my grandfather. (He's also the one I hugged last time. Yes I think he thought I was crazy.) Everyone has been very professional and really helpful, giving me hints on how to prevent future problems. I know they have gift items in their store and really should get over there and shop. read more

They have great gifts in the window which is what caught my eye. There was a cool key design in the cement out front. Went in and was immediately uncomfortable because the owner was on the phone, yelling at someone. Her coworker tried to quiet her down, thankfully, or I would have left because it was just weird. There are a lot of vintage door handles and necklaces made of really nicely designed and unique locks and keys. The lizards and snakes made of bike chains were very cool. Any way I'm walking along the shop and find a poster of a Yelp review which shows the review and the shop's whole rebuttal. They were publicly shaming the Yelper. We read through it and found it to be really sad and unprofessional. Who runs a shop this way? As we were leaving the cops showed up because a customer was having a disagreement with the owner. I'm not sure what it was about but I think he was trying to get a refund but she was refusing because she had "given him an item instead for free" and he was insisting he paid an additional $20 for said item. Lots of signs of a messed up business. I would avoid this place unless you want to buy some of the jewelry or have a really quick and easy key make. ---- in response, I definitely did not add falsities about cops being in your store. No they weren't getting keys cut, they were there because the man who was outside talking to them when I first checked out the items in your window, called about you ripping him off. Then as I was reading the Yelp shaming inside the store, the cops arrived and you were yelling about how you don't need to give him a refund because you gave him a free lock to make up for whatever shortcoming you had before (except the man disagreed and argued that it wasn't an even trade because it wasn't actually free, he paid $20 for it). That's way too much information to just make up. But got ahead and talk more crazy, it'll just make things so much better for you. read more

Rarely do I feel so impressed by service that I leave Yelp reviews, but Rault's really felt like exceptional service at a wonderful price. We moved into a new house and needed the place rekeyed and had an electronic lock installed. They came the next day, fixed all the locks quickly, and the price was more than fair. We will never go to another locksmith in New Orleans. I'm very impressed! You definitely notice the difference between the family business and a large company. Couldn't recommend more highly. read more

Great service and easy to work with. Locksmiths are usually able to make it out fairly quickly.

A true neighborhood gem! I have an elderly neighbor without family who has had some hard times, I got Rob from Rault to come out and rekey her door (she had tenants with access to her home that made her feel unsafe) and he not only did an outstanding job, he bought her breakfast bc it was cold and rainy and she couldn't cook for herself. Nobody cares that much anymore. The folks at Rault understand the importance of neighborhood the way few business these days do. I'm extremely proud to have such an establishment among us, and we are lucky to have them read more

I go in to get a key made and have to wait while the owner, who is on the customer side of the counter is yapping to someone about some local gossip. She sees me but keeps on talking and could care less about servicing customers. The guy, who looks a bit dirty, behind the counter helps me but with a condescending attitude. Just because your an older establishment and on Magazine Street doesn't mean you have to treat customers like crap. Not everyone can afford your expensive work or pay to have attitude thrown in for lagniappe. The $5.00 minimum for charges sucks too. Thanks for nothing. The keys that were cut didn't even work. read more

The actual locksmiths are very nice and familiar with older houses. They can order a myriad of hardware, but truthfully so can anyone with access to the Internet.. However, the rude people who work behind the counter and those who answer the phone are beyond any type of social norm. Quite unprofessional, antagonistic, and consistently insulting. I did business with them several times and the above was consistent. If you get the right person, it can be wonderful. read more

I can't believe no one has reviewed this place. It is just lovely. They have a nice variety of antique knobs, skeleton keys, plates and other related things along with new reproductions and assorted repurposed products. For example they have interesting wine stoppers made from old knobs and wrought iron fence flourishes. What really drew me into this store were the handmade jewelry pieces made from vintage and antique locks, plates and keys. I couldn't leave without walking out with one. read more

Great service, fast and economic option for an emergency with my bike. I definitely would contact them again if it's needed.

Returned from a two-week trip to find my front door lock wouldn't turn. Annoying. My friend referred me to Rob - he is AWESOME! He showed up in about 15-20 minutes and fixed my lock, made new keys for me, AND fixed my back door locks for me. All for less than $100. He was personable and funny and his apprentice (or not?) was also friendly. And cute! Hahaha. Anyway, I would recommend them for anyone needing a locksmith. They were quick, very nice, and well worth the price. Thank you, Rob! Aloha! read more
