Specialties
Established in 2003, HERO for Children, Inc. has been committed to improving the quality of life for children infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS in Georgia through enriching programs, unforgettable experiences, and connections with the community. We define "Quality of Life" (QOL) as the degree to which and individual enjoys physical, social, and emotional well-being and sees him/herself as being able to experience future success and fulfillment. Our programs and services include Super HEROs Mentoring, Camp High Five, Holiday of HEROs, and unforgettable experiences events (i.e., HERO for a Day, University of Georgia HEROs Olympics, Georgia Tech HEROs Fall Festival, etc). We strive to offer our children a variety of avenues via which to experience the normal joys of childhood, improve their academic performance, increase their life skills, enhance their self-esteem, and develop supportive friendships with peers.
History
Established in 2003.
The organization was founded by two University of Georgia graduates who had two separate, but similar experiences working alongside children infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS in Brazil and Africa. Both observed that although the children's basic needs (i.e. food, housing, and medical attention) were being addressed, no specific 'quality of life' (QOL) care services were being provided. After researching this phenomenon in Georgia, the founders discovered that none of the 500 HIV/AIDS service organizations in Georgia addressed the QOL needs of children. As a result, HERO for Children was created. HERO defines quality of life as the degree to which an individual enjoys physical, social, and emotional well-being and sees him/herself as being able to experience future success and fulfillment. Under this umbrella, the organization offers life skills development, emotional support through mentoring relationships, educational forums, a summer camp and recreational activities whi
