It's been some time since I've been wanting to give a helping hand, and I finally found an organization that had a great registration and sign up process that allowed me to help right away. You simply register on their website http://www.openhandatlanta.org/ and sign up for their available slots. It's broken up into 3 categories; food prepping, packing, and delivery. Today I did food packing with a group of 11 other volunteers. I was pretty surprised that majority of the volunteers were groups of family that brought their little kids. Teaching kids to help others is an awesome lesson and was pretty admirable of the parents. The location of the facility is one block away from the Sweetwater Brewery. You can tell right away with the Open Hand vans all parked in the lot. Come through the second entrance door and sign in on the computer. Once signed in, the coordinator will lead you to the room where you put your aprons and hair nets. They also offer a locker to place your belongings/valuable that will be locked. Once you get into your wardrobe, the coordinator will ask groups to take turns in washing their hands and place gloves. Inside the kitchen, there are 3 conveyor belts, which the volunteers worked on 2 of them. My bf and I got to label and stack into the racks. Others got to scoop and place the food into the trays. Labeling was pretty fun, though non stop because you're racing against a machine lol. We packed and labeled around a thousand in total and it was an awesome group effort. Time flew by so quickly and the music in the background helped tremendously, not to mention the great staff. It's amazing how much food is made and prepped here. Though we only packed, can't think how much work goes into cooking all this food, that looked pretty good. Today was eventful and I did leave with my heart growing x10. This is an awesome organization that provides thousands of food on a weekly basis to those that have chronic illnesses. Being that it was our first time, one thing I did wish that the staff told was a bit more about the organization or I guess I could have asked as well. Anyways, will come back again with others! Oh and don't forget to sign out as you're leaving~ And couple of tips, though the website will tell you when you sign up but, no open toe shoes, no accessories of any kind, and no sleeveless shirts. It is pretty chilly in the kitchen so if you get cold easily, wear long sleeve and they will provide you sleeve covers. Lastly, I strongly recommend you don't come on an empty tummy. 3 hours of work surely makes you hungry and it may put you in a hangry mood afterwards if you didn't eat anything in the morning =) Just sayin.

So I decided that during this health crisis "covid 19" I wanted to do something to help the community other than sit at home for how ever long my job wanted mandated. I heard about this non profit through my girlfriend and decided to do some volunteering. The registration process was relatively easy. I set up my account through the Open Hands Atlanta website.. There were various options to serve, I choose meal preparation. It probably took all of 3 minutes to set up an account and pick a date and time to volunteer. When I arrive on my slotted day, I could tell that things were kinda hectic..I learned that the normal operation Ooen Hands Atlanta was affected by Covid 19 and all of the governmental recommendations and mandates. So what would have been a smooth operation had a few minor bumps but nothing that stopped the mission of getting food to those in need. I actually ended up helping prep boxes of goods which was cool also..i think I will try delivery of food on my next volunteer day. Overall the staff was very friendly and accommodating and knowledgeable!!! Way to go Open Hands!!!

It's Saturday morning and I don't have to go into the office but I do want to do something fun l-i-k-e volunteering. Yaaaaayyyy!! Where should I go... other than Open Hand Atlanta. When I was in college at Spelman, I lead our weekly volunteer initiative when the name was Project Open Hand. So when my office said they wanted to do a collaborative volunteer project this is the first place that came to mind. After this initial meal packing assignment, I have tried to volunteer here at least twice a month depending on my schedule. I even had my friends gift me their time on my birthday to join me in a meal packing project. Last Saturday, was my first time doing meal delivery. We were assigned to a building off Ponce. It was nice to meet some of the meal recipients. If you just want to do something nice and valuable with your time you will enjoy this. If you are down and need a pick me up, try volunteering. It definitely helps with perspective. Happy Volunteering!!!!

Amazing organization. They put together healthy meals for those with illnesses, the elderly and those who cannot cook for themselves, at no charge. They run largely on donations of money and food, and volunteerism. You can volunteer to pack meals, which is great with a large group of around 10 (because you'll SPEED through the process) and you can also volunteer to deliver meals, which is something they really need help with. In April, they do Dine Out For Life at many awesome restaurants around Atlanta (and more cities).. where 25% or more of your bill will go towards the business. I'm excited to work further with this awesome organization!

Pretty non descriptive building. For your first time here you're more likely to notice the good measure vans in the parking lot.

Unlike other health and nutrition accounts I have followed/things I have tried, Gail truly gets into the science and "why" behind nutrition and health. She has helped me think about how food makes me feel and how my hormones and inner balance are affected by my choices. Mostly, my goals have expanded beyond weight loss into a more lifelong focus on wellbeing. The work is not only focused on nutrition, however. Gail gets into the bigger picture of longevity, mindfulness, and happiness through support in my exercise and mental health. She has taught me about meditation which I already see as a pivotal tool for my wellbeing. When I feel I am at a plateau, Gail gives advice to keep going. I would recommend anyone to work with Gail for a great investment in themselves.

Jennifer Hnat called me back in no time and worked with me to determine insurance coverage, as well as, prepared me for my upcoming appointment to ensure it was beneficial. I booked my first appointment May 2nd & this has been the best thing I could've done for myself to get ahead of my inability to control my eating. She educated me on foods to consider and really made me become more mindful about what I put in my body and when in order to obtain the lifestyle change I really wanted. She worked with my appointments to accommodate both myself and toddler since I'm a work from home Mom & that really means a lot to me. Here it is 1 & 1/2 month later and I'm happy to say I'm no longer binge eating. I have a better relationship with food without becoming a slave to a diet sort of lifestyle. I have more confidence in the choices I make and when it's best for me to eat. I still enjoy foods I did before just in moderation. And as if all of this wasn't enough, I've slimmed down so much that I'm now wearing a belt with clothing that once made me feel depressed to just put on. If you're looking for an amazing Nutritionist that will take time to get to know and understand your needs, be accommodating, & professional Jennifer Hnat is definitely the best place for you. My husband and daughters are very proud of the work I've done and for once in a very long time so am I. I look forward to the continued journey with Jennifer Hnat on this new lifestyle change.

After years of yo yo dieting, I had given up on myself and weight ballooned up to close to 350 pounds. When I called Sheryl, my eating was completely out of control. I needed someone to help me to gain control of my eating habits and my weight. Sheryl's approach was much different than the other plans I had tried before. During our first session she spent two hours asking me what I ate daily and designed a plan around the foods I liked to eat. Yes, you still need to eat nutritional foods to lose weight, but thankfully you aren't restricted to carrots and lettuce. :). There are no prepacked foods, or shots necessary to start to lose weight on Sheryl's plan. After a short time on the plan, I stopped craving the foods that sends my eating out of control. I also found it easy to get back on the plan on few occasions when I strayed. So far with Sheryl's help I have lost 60lbs, and I am confident with what I have learned, I can remain in control during my weight loss journey. It is also great to know that Sheryl is there to give you accountability, and help guide you when you hit a plateau. Sheryl really cares out her client. As my weight has come down, Sheryl has become a friend and has given me advice on how to better handle other parts of my life. My only regret about working with Sheryl, was that I did not meet her years ago.
