One Day Tax Service was recommended by an old co-worker a few years ago. I had a return done in 2006, and again for the 2008 tax year, I ended up doing my taxes for the 2007 tax year on the H&R Block website (if I remember correctly a $40, more or less, & efile included). I have a fairly simple return (a $65 fee w/ODTS & efile included)), I file as a single person, and I'm a full-time student, who before starting school again, made a year's worth of student loan payments. Although it was simple enough for me to do online, I prefer the personal service and interaction provided to me by Mai at ODTS. In addition to the things listed above, Mai is able to look at my old file to get an idea of what to expect. I also participated in a class-action lawsuit which ended up in a settlement, and I made a few donations this past year, so it really helped to be able to talk to Mai about such things when thinking about my tax return. It is worth it for me to pay the extra $20 to have personal and reliable service. It took minutes for Mai to look at my documents and to initially input my information, however, it took me a little longer, with tons of questions in my head, to do my own on H&R Block's website. I'm just the type of person who appreciates, and probably needs the extra guidance. Lastly, I appreciate that ODTS sends me a list of things to gather before and bring to my appointment, and that they offered me coffee or tea while I waited for Mai. HR Block on Bill Drake Way in Pacifica : location is terrible (right next to a bar) lots of drunken brawls, homeless hangout at the HR Block front door (in Pacific Manor). Lan Nancy Yao is suppose to be a master tax advisor, we don't understand her when and if she talks at all. She does not explain anything and she becomes angry when you want her to repeat things. I made a call to Hr block in manor today. let me state that I am not a customer I needed to know about a form to order from the IRS. I did not think it would be asking to much to ask for a form number. I guess I was wrong. I was treated like dirt. I was told that if I wanted to come and sign up they would sell me the information. Some great local business. If you are not willing to pay do not ask a favor. I informed the lady that she had no worries I would never use their services for anything. I did my tax with Nancy. She originally said my return would cost $150 but ended up charging near $400. She seems unhappy and impatient throughout the process. Plus she wrote all over my original documents which I find very unprofessional. Overall, I did get the job done but wasn't satisfied with the service. read more

HORRIBLE, and I mean HORRIBLE!!!!!!! So terrible, they don't even deserve one star. We dropped off our taxes over a month ago and they have done NOTHING but constant phone calls to us about stupid stuff and honestly, I do NOT understand what their problem is. Both my husband and I have credit over 800, we are EXTREMELY responsible people and they have completely toyed with us for over a month. I am SOOO angry right now, I don't even have words. DO NOT GO THERE EVER!!!! RIDICULOUS! My husband just went to pick up our taxes and nothing has been done. We now have to find another place and start over. Three weeks later, leaving 3 vm messages and making two visits to an abandon business. No one returns my calls. So, calling the national call center to make an appt. was the last resort. Do you really want to do business with a business who is only there for you during the small window of tax season. I went there today to find a feet high x 4' wide of mail. The VM was a black hole, never indicated an option to call to another place. I had to google and hope that I would reach a call center, of which I need somewhere in middle America. Jim and his staff are excellent! Our business has used him for years. Part of the price you pay is IF the IRS audits you, Jim help you with the initial meeting and will help you file a request to go to Tax Court if you (and he) think the IRS is wrong ... many times this is the case. Jim has all of the credentials to help you IF you have to go to court. Jim is very thorough and his signature gives a lot of credence to the return. AVOID THEM!!! One Day Tax service did a great job and charged a fair price. Then H&R block bought them and its gone to hell. The service is absolutely terrible as they cannot even reference their own records from last year, then forgot to file my taxes, and now they have raised their prices 150% in one year. H&R Block is a scam, go anywhere else but them they make things worse and change MORE. Good riddence! read more

Small business turned CORPORATE! Never again! Jim sold his business to HNR Block. He is a great person, no doubt. But it's unfortunate that he gave in to corporate America. One of the staff members who assisted me was unable to complete my taxes. She did not know what she was doing.I would think that my taxes are not complicated since I only have one form and I did not make that much money. Cindy had issues communicating,trying to figure out how to do my taxes and also emailing saying that she was trying to call me and that my phone was disconnected when she later admitted that it was her phone line not working. Initially I came in and waited for about an hour until she figured out what was wrong, then she proceeded to tell me to come back the next day and that she would call me. I called Jim the next day and came in so he could clear up the mess. Cindy apologized and proceeded to charge me $165.00 while in past I was only charged $80.00 I did not agree and left, never again will I come here. HNR block is all about taking your money America and making there Billions not giving you your Billions like there advertisement. They are full of it! I was referred to One Day Tax by a friend who goes to them every year, but warned me that they recently partnered with H&R Block and she suspected that this had sort of negatively impacted their customer service as well as their reasonable rates, but not harshly enough to stop her from continuing to go to them. I decided to give it a try. I called the number listed on Yelp and reached a message machine. I played phone tag a few times but finally connected with a woman who seemed to know absolutely nothing about One Day, their consultation format, their rates: nothing. I felt like I was talking to a brick wall. I would have expected her to give me some sort of reason as to why she couldn't answer any of my questions, but instead she acted like my questions were just bothersome and unnecessary. I was made to feel like I shouldn't be nitpicking about petty items like fees or scope of services. I made my appointment for 3 weeks later because I was told that was the soonest Saturday appointment. In retrospect, the reason I had such a poor scheduling experience was probably because I was channeled to an H&R Block answering service and was not speaking with One Day Tax. I arrived a couple minutes early and was promptly told that the associate with whom I was slotted had called out sick. The receptionist said, "I thought we called you" and I said "nope, nobody called me." She looked at the computer and said, "well that's weird, Claudia (the tax rep) didn't even have a 1:00 scheduled" (wait I thought you just said you thought you called me? Which is it?) so I said I had made this appointment 3 weeks ago. She walked over to a tax rep seated at a close by desk and I overheard the tax rep tell the receptionist, "oh, maybe that was the one that got randomly deleted". The receptionist said, "huh?" and the tax rep responded, "one of the appointments got randomly deleted." Nice. The receptionist didn't admit that little tidbit to me, but said that maybe something got lost in translation since I may have been channeled to the H&R answering service instead of their actual office. She said that one of the reps had an appointment available at 2PM if I wanted to wait. She asked if I lived in the area and I told her no, I live in San Francisco. She looked worried and told me there were some good lunch places in the area and that they would call me if the rep's 1:00 ended early and could see me sooner than 2:00." Since it was 1:00PM, I had already eaten lunch, so I sat in my car for an hour. At 2:00 I was hesitant to go back into the office since they had not called me, but I did anyway, and luckily so, because the rep was sitting there waiting for me. The 1:00 HAD ended early and they DIDN'T call me. My tax appointment ended up being a wash. Their quote was worse than what I had estimated myself online and they charge a $200 filing fee to boot. So I left; 2 hours of my day poorer, 1 manicure appointment missed and quite frazzled. So why am I giving 4 stars? The tax rep who I saw was nice, but not a CPA. Did you know that anybody can be a tax preparer at H&R? It's true, one does not need to be a CPA to work there and be a "tax professional". Nevertheless, here was another rep working when I went in and he was an elderly chap who did not have full use of either of his hands, but was a tax-preparing machine. His name is James (Jim) Greenbach and I have read, and now witnessed, that he is the man to see. Go to One Day Tax and see Jim. Don't deal with the H&R portion of this place though. Oh, and confirm the sh*t out of your appointment. And then confirm it again.
