OMG! How could I have missed a review of this awful place!
Wife & I have always used a private accountant but for some bizarre reason that we still don't understand ourselves, we wanted to give H&R block a try this tax season. Maybe it was sheer curiosity which we've come to embrace the catch phrase, "Curiosity killed the cat!"
When we made our appointment we asked about cost. They told us that they had to see what we were going to claim to better asses and tell us how much it would cost; I'm sure this was their tactical sales pitch to reel us in. We arrived and showed what we were going to claim (not very complicated) and were still being mis-lead about the cost with nobody able to tell us how much the services would cost. This should have told us to leave but I guess we were stubbornly curious how much it would cost.
During the process my wife had to constantly point out to the rep how to properly fill out the on screen prompts on his computer. In the end we were quoted a cost of $395 to complete ONE tax return and as you can imagine we nearly fell out our seats (I expected more along the lines of $150). The most frustrating part was that my wife practically helped the rep complete the computer prompted forms.
In the end we apologized but weren't going to use their service. They didn't seem to like that we were leaving but I told them they really need to better be able to give an honest estimation on costs up front rather than try to make customers feel obligated after having a rep spend 45 mins completing forms. I really think it's their tactic to have customers go through the form completion process to surprise them with the cost and hope they feel obligated to pay. read more
