Hello everyone, I recently had a bad experience with the H&R Block Claims Department in Kansas City, Kansas. I had my 2022 taxes done with H&R Block in Milllersville, MD and purchase the "Peace of Mind Extended Service plan. Fast forward to October 2024 I get a letter from the IRS stating that some income was not reported on my 2022 taxes and I now owe the IRS $2,700.00 So, I schedule the appointment with the H&R Block in Glen Burnie, MD, because I knew I gave the tax preparer in 2022 all the necessary documents to properly file my taxes. I got and appointment on October 31, 2024 with the Glen Burnie, MD H&R Block location. The person at that location took a look at all my paperwork from 2022 and said H&R Block made a mistake reporting personal loan that I settled for less the amount I owed. She also stated, I was lucky to purchase the "Peace of Mind Extended Service Plan" to cover the $2,700.00 I currently owe the IRS and $800.00 I owe the State of Maryland, once my amended taxes were completed for 2022. The individual at the Glen Burnie, MD location submitted my claim paperwork on October 31, 2024 to get reimbursed for the taxes I know owe the IRS and the State of Maryland. About 5 weeks later I get a call from the Claims Department in Kansas City, Kansas asking me to fill out and Insolvency Worksheet to finish processing my claim. I asked the lady what an Insolvency Worksheet has to do with processing my claim. I did not file for bankruptcy! She stated it was normal procedure and submit the paperwork to your local H&R Block in Glen Burnie, MD to continue processing my claim. I submitted the insolvency paperwork to my local H&R Block to finish processing my claim. I got a letter from H&R Block dated December 12, 2024 stating that my claim was denied, because it doesn't fit within their policy guidelines, and I need to go back and refer to the polices if I had questions on why my claim was denied. The letter was so generic, and they didn't even offer me a refund for purchasing the Peace of Mind Extended Policy Plan. I wrote this long review/complaint to warn future and current customers of H&R Block slimy way of not standing behind their guaranteed policy! I'm currently fighting my case with Better Business Bureau for resolution. I will never do business with H&R Block again, because they did not want to honor my claim and found some ludicrous reason to deny my claim and not clearly stating the reason and showing where in the policy I don't meet their standards. Stay away from Susan at this HR Block. In fact I will never use HR Block again due to my recent experience with her at the Glen Burnie branch. Here's my story as of May 2023. I had a complicated tax situation that involved capital gains and inheritance. We were referred to Susan at HR Block and met with her in Dec 2022 to prepare for tax prep in a couple of months. She reassured us she could handle our situation, but a voice inside was advising me to get a CPA or experienced tax professional instead. I wish I had. Our first meeting she was in such a hurry that she couldn't wait for me to complete my sentences. She'd put her hand up like she'd heard enough and said, "just the facts. I don't need the whole story." She also said she'll need a few hours to do our taxes so wouldn't be able to get them done in the 30 minute time allotted for that first appt. We scheduled a second appointment and I arrived. She had no idea who I was or my situation but I could tell she was trying to pretend like she did. So I started from ground zero to explore lain and again her hand would come up as she cut me off mid sentence so she could try inputting different numbers into her tax calculator screen. She ran out of time, again saying that she didn't know it was a bypass trust situation, the situation I had already discussed with her on two different occasions which was the reason for scheduling this appointment. I guess she had forgotten that or cut me off in our previous conversations so she only got half the information. I had also emailed her two times the complete documents she'd asked for. She said she never received them. My sent file showed she did. We scheduled a third appointment to at least file an extension and pay the estimated taxes due. We did do that, $85k due. It was less than I thought and I was happy to pay and schedule another appointment with Susan to finish the taxes. She said it would just be to complete the paperwork and there shouldn't be much of a difference in what I owed. On our fourth and last appointment it was like "ground hogs day." I couldn't believe it, she didn't remember our situation even when I started to go over it with her again. She had nothing saved from our last appointments in her computer or any follow up files. She dropped her forehead in the palm of her hand and said she can't figure out how she calculated my original capital gains taxes. Instead of putting the sale of a house for $600k she had put $99k instead back when I paid the taxes due on extension. I then simply asked what I owed her for her time which was nothing she said so I grabbed my things and left. I am now in search of a qualified tax professional. I did come back to discuss this problem with their branch manager and to get further clarification about a fir Susan had given me. The manager appeared to understand my tax situation and the question about the firm Susan had given me. Her head was going north to south as I was talking, indicating she understood me. She then told me she is just in charge of the branch location's expenses, rent/maintenance, etc, and didn't know about taxes. She asked that when I do figure out where they went wrong if I wouldn't mind dropping by to tell them as a favor. Now just let that sink in...That pretty much says it all about HR Block. Be very careful if your tax situation is anything more than W2 and/or needs more than 30 minutes to complete. *UPDATE AS OF MAY 30: I did find a qualified CPA to prepare our taxes, and I just finished our meeting with him. The return was more complicated than most and I'm grateful that we used Susan initially. Although the preparation was to complicated for her she did get the tax prepayment part right and protected us because it was more than we actually owed. We get a refund between state and federal of $28k! Had Susan underestimated our taxes we could have owed that much. Thank you for that, Susan. In summary HR Block is great for W2 wage earners, dividends and interest income, pensions etc, but you'll need a qualified tax professional for anything more complicated. Susan was scatterbrained in that she didn't open or save emailed documents sent to her, couldn't remember what we were doing from one meeting to the next, but as long as she can prepare your return and/or file an extension in one setting I think she's up for it. Because she overestimated out prepaid which meant we didn't owe anymore (got money back) I'm giving her two more stars. read more

I had a great experience at the Glen Burnie office last year, 2022. This year, I guess the Glen Burnie office is quite busy so they are not too patient with phone calls. Their tone is a little dismissive. I do customer service so I will advise them to be patient with customers when they have large call volumes. Its better to answer as many calls as you can than to try and answer so many and leave a very bad impression of the office. read more

What a joke I thought that they were professionals and the tax advisor Susan Ryan has caused our entire family stress and money losses. She lies and does not care about her clients , I cant get her or anyone on the phone to call me back to even explain our nightmare. Save yourself do not go there!!!! read more

Stay away from this nightmare. After doing my own taxes for many years, I had more complicated issues last year and felt I needed professional help. I submitted my materials and got no response. When I reached back out to verify that materials were received and inquired about next steps and timing, I received a "materials received" message from Susan. Seemed automated but she is likely overwhelmed right now, though I followed up again and received no response. I'd stay away from these folks. read more

Horrible customer service... The website scheduling messed up, causing to schedule us at 2 different times, although we only received one confirmation. Because of this, I can only assume we were easily dismissed when we showed up for our confirmed time and made to wait over half an hour, while people were seen before us that just walked in read more

If I could give this particular establishment a "negative star" review I absolutely would. I filed my taxes with them April 12.....many errors were made so I ended up having to get my taxes amended. Here it is December and im still waiting due to the miscommunication and non-accountability of some staff members. Let's start at the front door. The receptionist who was there during the July-September time frame was very rude and condescending. Next the "tax specialist" who did my 2020 taxes (her name is Joyce) made a number of errors on my taxes which resulted in me making a number of unnecessary visits to the facility. She input info that was not even given to her. I went from a large amount of money returning to me, to a very small amount!! Another tax associate (her name is Susan) would tell me something one visit and act as if she didn't know the next visit. She was kind, but that did not get me my money. Other associates would tell me "If Susan said it, believe her". Not so. Im just getting back on my feet from being homeless and I was depending on the return to help give me a boost. After all, I did work for it. I file a standard return. No child tax credit, nothing other than just W-2's from employment. Here is is December and I still have not received my taxes. PLEASE GO TO ANOTHER FACILITY OR UTILIZE ANOTHER TAX CENTER! If you've been coming here for years, by all means continue to do so. I was coming here for years but that will definitely change next time. read more

If I could give negative stars, I would. They charged us almost a thousand dollars to do our taxes then didn't even file them for us. They tried to claim we didn't pay, so that's why they didn't file for us, when in fact they just made a mistake, or forgot- who knows. But luckily we were able to show proof that we did pay ($800). Please do yourself a favor and do NOT use this location- I probably wouldn't use any H&R Block again, but especially this one. read more

My wife moved to Maryland about ten years ago when we got married and bought a house. We had made many financial changes in a short period, plus she was getting hassled by both states about exactly who she owed taxes to so we decided to have our taxes done professionally. We were so pleased with our service that first time we have been using them ever since. The accountant we used was very personable and was able to clear up my wife's state issues with a phone call. We have had some bumpy experiences over the years, but mainly because we were unprepared at how the H&R Block experience can vary at different locations. After a couple attempts to use other locations that were more convenient to us, we came back to our accountant at this location and that's where we've stayed. We see her once a year, but she remembers us, treats us as loyal customers, and does everything she can to save us as much money as possible. H&R Block is pretty much an accounting clearing house, but when you find a good accountant, keep them. Most of their accountants work out of different offices, which charge different rates, so be sure to ask your accountant which office will give you the best one. read more
