I used to work in the pet care industry so I know what to look for, and before I worked in pet care, I traveled a lot & was a client. I have had some nightmare-ish experiences with other boarding places, such as forgetting to administer heart medicine multiple days to 3rd degree sunburns from letting my boy be outside all day long to nearly losing my pittie from an allergic reaction (staff had to throw water on her to wake her up, she was so out of it & nonresponsive I had to rush her to the emergency vet.) So with that said, believe me when I say I am picky now as to who cares for my fur kids. The owners of The Barking Birch are amazing. They are good people, trustworthy & know a lot about dogs & love dogs. But it's not just enough to love dogs to do this work, it takes knowledge about dog breeds & skill reading body language, which the owners have. It is not easy sometimes supervising a playgroup of dogs, they are like toddlers! They have multiple huge play areas to separate by personality & lots of toys & playground equipment. What I like is that there's play time, nap time, then more playtime before bed. Nap time is important because some dogs get too worked up and/or cranky with all day constant play. I also love that the dogs sleep on comfy cots in their individual suites rather than an open sleep arrangement that's becoming more popular. They can rest well & are safe tucked in their suites. Most importantly, your dog will not just be one of 75 or 100 dogs like the bigger places. They get one-on-one attention which is so important to me. I don't worry a bit when I leave them, which is HUGE for me, because I can be kind of a control freak when it comes to my kiddos. My dogs tell me that they love this place too, because whenever I arrive to pick them up, they could care less about coming home with me! Last time, they both saw me & my girl was like oh hai ma & jumped on a chair to relax & my boy grabbed a toy & paw'ed the door to his suite open to accomplish his mission of stealing all the toys from the others, then destroying said toys. They were just like cool! Mom's here. I felt like my dogs were part of their family. What else could you ask for?! Another plus is they post lots of pics online (FB) which I love. I'm sort of obsessed with their page. Such cute silly pics! Both of my dogs have used their spa several times for baths & nail trims and my girl had the best pedicure ever. I meant to tell them this but I forgot! And she is not a fan of nail trims! There are hardly any places like The Barking Birch. They are unique & such a find! Even if I move to Mpls, I will still drive 1.5 hours to board my dogs here.

They took over the last minute changes and made sure she got her medicine and new diet during her stay. We were able to check in on her whenever we needed and were able to stay up to date with how she was doing.
