I can't quite put my finger on what was missing, but I would rate it a solid 4/5. The service was good throughout the meal, and the staff was friendly, courteous, and attentive. We wrapped up the meal with Baklava because, after all, what is a meal without dessert? It was a nice sweet ending to the experience. Overall, this is a good place for a satisfying meal. The lamb shank is definitely worth ordering, the service is welcoming, and the atmosphere is relaxed. I'd happily come back, especially for the lamb shank.

This is a small market that most importantly (for me at least) has a small kitchen pumping out classic Iraqi dishes, and also the typical Iraqi breads. Iraqi-Style Beef Kabob ($2.99) - They only had beef kabobs available when I stopped by. They grill the kabobs over a normal gas grill rather than the more traditional charcoal. The temperature and cook time seems to be a bit lacking as there isn't really any developed char or smoky flavors. The smell is almost gamey, but the texture is very tender, and the taste is mild with some allium notes. Charring would greatly improve the anemic appearance and taste of the meat. They serve the kabobs on a wheat pita and for some reason do not include any charred tomatoes, onions, etc that this would normally come with. This is probably the only place to get Iraqi-style kabobs in the area, so I can't complain too much. (3/5) Hummus ($4.99) - This is served in an 8 oz container and they add olive oil and sumac on top before handing it over. The hummus is a bit coarse and has a somewhat strong earthier flavor than a lot of other hummus. Still, this seems to be relatively fresh, without the taste of lemon or preservatives. That's a win in my book, for an area not known for Middle Eastern food. (3/5) Mmarket also sells bags filled with khubz and samoon, which according to the owner, isn't baked on site, but at a bakery nearby. Next time I visit I'll need to ask if that bakery is accessible to the public, just so I can get the freshest bread right from the tanoor, assuming they use one rather than a commercial oven. I gave Mmarket a 3/5 purely because the only comparison point I have is with the Iraqi markets in Dearborn. Let's be real, outside of a select few regions in the US, 90% of "Middle-Eastern" (aka "Mediterranean") food is some abomination of Americanized Greek food mixed with food from the Levant. Of the more authentic 10%, 90% of those restaurants focus on Lebanese cuisine. That last 1% includes places like Mmarket - places that serve authentic food from a specific country in the Middle East. While the execution of the food here is more grocery-store level than restaurant-level, for anyone who wants a taste of real Iraqi food, Mmarket is probably the best in the area. While I wouldn't get the prepared food again, I would come back for the khubz specifically since I don't think there's anywhere else near Seattle that has it for sale.

No cucumber, no other filler like all the "Mediterranean" Middle-Eastern/Greek fusion restaurants that permeate the area. As an additional sign of authenticity - they serve complementary warm sweet black tea! I believe they also only serve bottle water, which they charge for (it might surprise people, but this is yet another mark of authenticity). I've been looking for a place like this ever since moving here from Dearborn, MI! Walking in for a weekday lunch, I saw several people come in for takeout orders, but I was the only person eating in. Chicken Shawarma Wrap ($12.95) - This is a traditionally made chicken shawarma wrap, consisting of only chicken shawarma, pickles, and toum wrapped up in bread. The bread in this case is saj, a thin almost flour tortilla-like bread. It's not quite as pliable as a tortilla, instead enveloping all the ingredients in a warm coating. The menu lists this as "fresh baked" but that's definitely a misnomer. It's more factory produced, possibly weeks ago, given the heavy dough conditioner and preservative taste. The saj is what I disliked about this shawarma sandwich the most. They give a substantial portion of chicken, more than enough protein to satisfy. The seasoning blend they use is sublime, it's earthy and warm, savory and salty, and it brings me right back to Dearborn. The meat is freshly shaved off the spit with an electric shaver (rather than by knife as the traditionalists would do it). It's not particularly moist, but isn't dried out either. They don't add enough toum in the sandwich to overcome this deficiency - it's applied in a thin layer that's barely noticeable inside. Luckily they serve a small cup of toum on the side that's enough for the sandwich - if only they added it inside instead of being essentially a dip! The toum itself is a higher tier one for my tastes. It's heavily garlicky, almost having a pungent sweaty kind of aroma. There doesn't seem to be too much filler at all inside, and while the spiciness is tempered, the garlic is full flavored. The consistency more resembles a paste than a sauce - my preference is to be even more paste-like than this, but the toum here is still great. There are a couple of pickles inside giving some acidity and a slightly crisp bite. Again, they don't add too much of it - I'm actually used to more pickle and less meat in shawarma sandwiches. The entire wrap is pressed and warmed, enough to get some of the saj to develop a crackly crispy edge. The sandwich is served with a couple of olives and two strange orange colored pickles. Super salty and slightly acidic, but somewhat floppy. (5/5) Shawarma Time serves some of the most authentic shawarma that I've found in the Seattle Metro. People who are used to Mediterranean Gyro-fusion shawarma might not enjoy the kind of service and amenities Shawarma Time provides, but for me, I'll definitely be visiting again for more.
